yes!!! i think about that everytime i see this commercial its like a horror movie!! and its so clear she doesnt even actually go through her hair either so how does she drop huge clumps like that?? i guess this mostly my growing issue with commercials as a whole looking so fake! ik theyre trying to sell a nice looking product, but at a certain point...
Finally someone is talking about this! Every time I see this commercial I cringe. The girls mother should have told production this was very wrong lol!
as a curly girl who grew up in a family that didn't really know how to take care of curly hair, I definitely spent most of my childhood brushing myself into hagrid territory. I recently banned myself from using my brush when my hair's dry and I'm doing so much better now 😭
I’m 79 yo. I had banana curls til I was 7. My mother always said it is a sin to braid curly hair. Therefore, no brushing. Started brushing in my fifties because I could finally straighten my hair with an appliance rather than combing a home perm through my hair. Really short now. hair loss - at least 50% - due to aging and alopecia. Don’t know why I shared this but in the 50s and 60s no one knew how to cut curly hair. There were no products specifically for curly hair. Different planet.
It’s a more popular sentiment now that more white people have textured hair that any hair product can be used for the hair type it’s meant for (regardless of race). Though I understand your apprehension because gatekeeping is still a thing sometimes.
Apprehensive means that you may have been put off from trying it because you thought they were only meant for black women. That’s valid because black people have in the past created things only for other black people, but keeping it to yourself or to a certain group just because that’s where it originated is generally considered bad and is called gatekeeping
We lived in ethnic neighborhoods. Completely unaware of hair products for anyone other than the white (German, Dutch, and Irish) people I grew up with in a small town in Greater Cincinnati. No products for curly hair. Hairdressers didn’t know how to cut my hair. As Jews entering a very closed society we were seen as outsiders. I thought my skin was dark until I was in college. I’m telling you, there were no black people, therefore, no marketing for such products.
Interracial marriage was made legal, so lots of people (like me) are multiracial. People now can have a wide variety of skin tone and hair types. I’ve seen fair toned white people have curlier hair than me. In addition to that, there’s the internet. Now lots of people who thought they had straight or wavy hair are discovering that washing a different way or using different products can enhance your natural hair types
I think you're erasing entire generations of mixed race African-Americans starting with slavery.
Not to mention Jewish, Roma, Egyptian, Saudi, Spanish, Irish, and other textured haired "white" people.
OH NOOOO

First thing I thought of when seeing this commercial!

I misread the Swiffer as Suffer omg
The way I just audibly gasped when I swiped to the second photo.

Madame CJ Walker became a millionaire back in like 1906 from the products she created for curly hair. I watched a film about it.
I know the author, A’lelia Bundles. She is a wonderful person.
Her products were for black women.
I know the story from Madam Walker’s great great granddaughter herself. Why 7 down votes?

Thank you for your considerate explanation. What is gatekeeping and why am I apprehensive?

Why do you think more white people today have textured hair?

It’s very disturbing. A child is doing more cleaning than two of my roommates ever do.
this ad always bothers me hahaha
Every time I see this I cringe!
My husband's comment after seeing it - is that triggering? He knows how clueless my mom was with my hair when I was a kid.
