Did I ruin it? Or did I maybe overdo it? It does feel wayyy softer. Maybe I can make it look a litter neater by shaving off some of the fuzzies? To me it just looks old/dirty now.

I think it might look off to you because it actually needs to be brushed out more! Right now it looks like it's halfway between where it started (raw stitches) and where it wants to go (fluffy!). As others said, wet felting or trimming could help too
I think it looks good the way it is! For future projects, some wools work better for brushing than others. Mohair and alpaca are ideal because the fibers are long and smooth enough to dislodge from the rest of the work without breaking.
I wouldn't recommend brushing this anymore because you might start to actually affect the integrity of the stitches, and I wouldn't recommend trying to felt it for risk of it shrinking too much.
Yeah that’s what I’ve seen but mohair is so expensive!! I wanted to experiment with wool first, but in future I might only try this with wool that has more of a roving texture.
Also you’re validating my fear—I feel like I already brushed it for so long I’m afraid I’ll start ripping it apart! And I already had to wet block to stretch it to the correct size, so I don’t want to risk shrinking it with wet felting…
I also tried it on a headband for myself that ended up with a lovely cloud-like texture, but maybe it’s just not meant to be done on every project 😅 probably the fewer colors the better
I think the difference was the headband was made with chunkier, looser-spun wool—sort of like the thicker parts in a roving yarn. This yarn was just worsted weight and had less fluff to pull on. Let that be a lesson if you decide to give it a try!
Wool hat lover here. Brushing it out like that is just a faster way to get past the break in period of the first hundred wears. Just be careful not to strip it of oils, because it gets softer with more exposure to your skin and hair and itchy again when you clean it too harshly. Just like a good cutting board, wool hats need a little oil.
i think it turned out lovely tbh!! i generally wouldn’t try brushing out something with too much of a pattern/detail because the brushing will blur it. the pattern here is just big enough that it’s not too obscured tho!!
Tbh I agree with you. I like the stitch detail. It's ok if brushed out isn't your asthetic. I can't for the life of me understand the popularity of mohair for instance
I never heard of this but it’s actually brilliant idea. Aging and use will make it so that by itself over time anyway and this way you get to control the outcome
If you don’t like the brushed effect, a sweater shaver will reduce it somewhat. It won’t bring it all the way back to the initial stitch definition but will partially reverse the brushed effect.
The black yarn is actually just a darker shade of brown. I think the color combo of browns & yellow are contributing to me thinking it looks dirty and poopy 😭 the yarn is KnitPicks - Wool of the Andes
It really looks pretty. I can see myself reacting similarly and feeling sure I'd screwed up a nice result if I hadn'tused that technique before. But I bet you'll end up liking that softer look it's got now.
Man, it looks knitted brushed out. If that's what you were going for, cool, but I can definitely see this not looking how you want if you were hoping it would look like it was crocheted. Genuinely, I think it looked way better before being brushed out too, I prefer how the individual stitches look. Hopefully you get an answer that helps you!
It needs to be a natural fiber to work, preferably something “fluffier” or looser-spun than the yarn I used. The ideal yarn is mohair, but it’s pretty expensive so I opted for wool! From what I’ve read, you’re supposed to use a wire brush—I just used my dog’s brush. Good luck!
Fuzzy wool items/items with "halos" always look cheap and worn out to me. I get that other people feel differently, but know that you're not alone. I don't think it looks terrible now, but I prefer how it looked before.
You could either brush it a lot more and really bring out the effect, or if you want to return it to its unbrushed state you can use a shaving razor to get off all the fluff.

I like it. Brush it more.
Agree. I think it looks great and you should commit further!!
Yup
This
I think it might look off to you because it actually needs to be brushed out more! Right now it looks like it's halfway between where it started (raw stitches) and where it wants to go (fluffy!). As others said, wet felting or trimming could help too
I think it looks exactly how it's supposed to! Gives it that nice softened look.
I think the pictures of it flat didn't really do it justice because the photo of it on looks really nice.
I instantly tought "I need to try this" The hat looks really cool after brushing:)
Does the brushed out pictures hurt anyone else’s eyes?? Like it’s one of those optical illusions
It also looks slightly different depending on how I brush it—different directions make the colors “bleed” in different patterns which can be trippy
The flat one (pic 3) does, it looks like I'm approaching it at warp speed
It looks better brushed, and looks totally like it was made that way purposefully.
I think it looks good the way it is! For future projects, some wools work better for brushing than others. Mohair and alpaca are ideal because the fibers are long and smooth enough to dislodge from the rest of the work without breaking.

Wear it confidently! It's lovely as-is!

Not gonna lie OP, I agree. I know it’s in and people like it but it’s not for me.
I also tried it on a headband for myself that ended up with a lovely cloud-like texture, but maybe it’s just not meant to be done on every project 😅 probably the fewer colors the better

It actually looks really cute on the headband! That’s selling me more for sure
I think the difference was the headband was made with chunkier, looser-spun wool—sort of like the thicker parts in a roving yarn. This yarn was just worsted weight and had less fluff to pull on. Let that be a lesson if you decide to give it a try!
I think you just need to brush the hat more. This got fuzzier faster, the hat needs more time.
Totally off topic but I love your username!
Fwiw, that does look warm and fuzzy.

You could maybe try wet felting it a smidge to get the fizz to stay down.
I think it looks pretty. It has a lovely misty quality after being brushed.
Girl, whatchu talkin bout? I love that softened felted look. It looks lived-in, loved and comfortable. Hat goals!
i think it turned out lovely tbh!! i generally wouldn’t try brushing out something with too much of a pattern/detail because the brushing will blur it. the pattern here is just big enough that it’s not too obscured tho!!
(if you don’t like it tho—u can always try shaving it with a clothing de-piller?)
I think the hat looks great!!! I love the colors and I love the pattern/stitch. And I love the soft look of the brushed out wool!
Don't doubt yourself, you did a great job on this hat! And it looks great on you too so keep smiling 😀✌🏼❤️
I like it, it adds a "well traveled" charm to it!
Tbh I agree with you. I like the stitch detail. It's ok if brushed out isn't your asthetic. I can't for the life of me understand the popularity of mohair for instance
SO cute! Looks like you did a great job!
Oo I love it even more brushed out!
If you hate it you could shave it? I shave my felted projects and it helps a lot?
I never heard of this but it’s actually brilliant idea. Aging and use will make it so that by itself over time anyway and this way you get to control the outcome

I love the brushed look, though I see what you mean, I think k brushing the black yarn adds to the "dirty" effect. What yarn did you use?

I like it. Brush more!
It's a great add on Amigurumi as well
Can anyone tell me how you brush out work? Do you need a specific brush or specific wool? I have a project that might benefit from this!!
Good luck!
Dogs' wire brush or try the hooky side of Velcro as well
My exact words as I scrolled this post were, “Instant regret? It looks awesome!”
You have to brush a lot more.
Wait you guys are brushing out your finished objects?

Oh my god it's SO cute brushed!! I have to try that now!!
Try one of those sweater shaver things.
I love it before and after!!! 🥰
I love it before and after!!! 🥰
it’s soooo cute i love it
Fuzzy wool items/items with "halos" always look cheap and worn out to me. I get that other people feel differently, but know that you're not alone. I don't think it looks terrible now, but I prefer how it looked before.
I like it alot
Keep going! Ha
As a pottery friend once said, they don't know what "before" looked like
I love that!
Maybe it looks worse in person but I think it looks like a nice felty fuzzy hay
It looks so cool!
You could either brush it a lot more and really bring out the effect, or if you want to return it to its unbrushed state you can use a shaving razor to get off all the fluff.
I love it after brushing out. Looks perfect and so soft!
I think it’s cute maybe try brushing it more and r u using a mohair brush
Just using a wire brush and not being too cute about it. I am BRUSHING brushing
I like it better this way.
i think it looks fantastic!!
It needs more brushing. It takes forever but it's worth it. Good start,I like the pattern.
way better brushed!
It’s still cute! I like it.
I really like it brushed too!
It looks really cute!!
I like it actually
I like it 👌
I need to do this to the next beanie I make! It looks like a fun project.
I like it better brushed.
i think it looks better brushed out
Looks great!!!!
I really like it...I've never tried it before but it looks nice to me
I really like the brushed look!
i actually really like it, and agree you could brush it out more. looks great no matter what tho!
I'm with u but I also agree do it more cause I can see the cozy appeal if you floof it out more
Perhaps try needle felting it?
It looks great when you are wearing it. If you need to, try blocking the top
That is how it should look mostly. Still needs more brushing.
I actually really like it brushed! I'm usually not into the brushed look, but I really like the look of this one.
I like it!
Oh my god it’s GORGEOUS I’m so serious, it absolutely elevated it 100% it went from a nice homemade hat to high end fashion $1200 hat
What did you use to brush it out with?
Wire pet brush!
I think it’s awesome! I can’t even see any fuzzies. Very nice! I try to crochet n I always end up with wavy scarves. 🙄 I lose count, I have adhd. lol
It looks so soft!
I like it way more in the brushed pictures. It doesn’t look old or dirty to me.
I like it though, just as is
