Hello ca’s. I drink very heavily on weekends, probably a fifth at least a day and i love it, been doing this for a while now. before i started my full time job i was drinking heavily every day so i understand that part.

Where i dont understand, is how do individuals have a full time job and still drink a fifth+ daily? How do you sneak alcohol at work and not get caught on your breath or clothes? I just guess i dont understand how its possible to drink that much and coherently do a job while i understand if youre remote or something like that.

  • 750 ml a day isn't that hard if you work from home. It might get a little rough but that's do-able depending on what type of alcohol it is.

That's what I was drinking in the evening after work everyday.

I'd have to say I could probably do it if I started at like 7pm and was asleep by midnight....I'd be scared at how fast I'd get accustomed to that. Probably 2 weeks of that would get me so kindled.

Yeah it gets kinda scary. I'd get home from work and between 7 and 830 I'd pound back a 750ml vodka, then go to bed at 10.

On weekends it was super easy to break well over a litre per day.

I spent December tapering and getting dry, been dry since new years now; trying to see if I can go a year without booze.

Damn, first off good for you going dry. First few weeks are the hardest. I'm aiming to have at least 3-4 days sober sooner than later, went way too hard the last few months and hit that wall where I can't sleep without liquor.

Were you just doing shots of vodka? chilled at least?

I've been tapering the for last 48 hours and haven't slept..heating up dinner and eating some unisom with a few PBR's and try to sleep. Usually after 2 days is with the insomnia stops, at least I hope, need to try to salvage this week.

Nah man I was just drinking straight from the bottle. I'd start by playing video games, switch to tv when I couldn't focus enough, and then switch to the bed and finish the bottle and watch YouTube until I passed out.

Straight from the bottle's tit like mother vodka intended.

And yeah the first week of going dry sucks but you got this 💪

HOW??!? I literally took 4 shots of tequila last night between 6-830pm and I woke up feeling SO FUCKING ROUGH!! Mind you, I can put a bottle down in a day, but for some reason this messed me up, how you get a whole bottle down in 3hrs is insane!

Yep I was doing this for a while. Up at 5, work from 6 to 5 give or take 15 minutes, home by 5:30 usually. A good 6-8 hours to down a bottle, get a few hours of shitty sleep, and get back to it. Of course it's natural to consume any left overs in the morning before work.

    edit:

okay i read your other comment. you're crazy man. a fifth in 2-3 hours? insane.

  • I’m an attorney. When I was full blown addiction phase I had 20+ drinks spaced out over the day. How did I get away with it at work? I have no idea. Nobody ever commented on me smelling like alcohol, and if they smelled it on me they would have certainly said something, so my only explanation is I just don’t give off the alcohol smell as much as others. Substance abuse is actually very common in my industry, so maybe people just looked the other way? I doubt that, but I guess idk for sure.

As for being functional, getting to 20+ drinks a day happened over a very long drinking career where my tolerance became extremely high, and I was able to be semi functional at high amounts. Even when I wasn’t a full blown alcoholic, I had a ridiculously high tolerance. In college one time I drank 18 shots in a drinking game over about 2 hours, and I was still standing and having conversations with people at the party, and walked myself home later. Later on in working life, I was able to be semi functional at work despite being 8+ drinks deep.

These things may sound like good things, but they’re not at all. They’re precisely what allowed me to get away with drinking a ton every day for a long time and get very mentally and physically addicted. If I faced consequences earlier on, maybe I would’ve quit earlier.

    Still, respect man haha

What and where did you drink during the work day? Did you chew gum religiously?

Not a gum chewer. My preferred drink was voodoo ranger ipas. 9-12% alcohol and tasted great. My routine was usually having 2-3 voodoo ranger tallboys in the morning when I woke up, usually 2, which I’d finish over 20-30 mins. In addition to what I mentioned above, I also have the ability to drink large quantities of liquid in short periods of time. Once I’d arrive at work, I’d usually have another voodoo tall boy. This was usually enough to get through most of the work day without drinking. Around 3-4 pm I’d usually have 2-3 regular sized voodoos which I would just go to a corner in the parking garage and finish. The rest of the day/night I’d usually finish another 6 regular sized voodoos. I did this for like 7 months daily, and went undetected by everyone at work and my wife at home, so she apparently couldn’t smell it on me either. At home I’d have random stashes around the house that I’d quickly go to and chug a beer in 30 seconds when nobody was looking. I ended up quitting that job before going to rehab, because it was not a great fit and was a big reason for my drinking. I was fully expecting them to call me out for drinking and performance issues at work when I quit, but they never did. Now sober 6 months and inexplicably still have a wife who stuck by me.

Lawyer here. Booze and the practice of law go together like peas and carrots. You must’ve gotten fat af from all that IPA.

Rehab was such a nice holiday from litigation.

The opposite actually. I’m one of those people that seriously struggles to gain weight, so I actually lost weight during this time but in a bad way. I was emaciated skinny as a teenager and eventually got very into fitness and lifting, but during addiction I was barely eating real food most days and lost a ton of muscle.

I’m also in litigation and the break was definitely nice lol

Huh. I was crushing IPA during the pandemic and looked like the Stay Puff Marshmallow Man. If I even touch one of those now I feel so bloated and sleepy I just wanna pass out. Like drinking a loaf of bread.

Random question, and if you don't want to answer I understand. My cousin used to date a couple of attorneys in NYC (Manhattan iirc) and swore the cocaine/meth scene was rampant there. He was basically a sugar baby for a few and I believe it. Do you believe it?

I’m also in NYC and so I can’t name the firms, but for some, absolutely for cocaine. In the summer during intern season, there are some firms where it’s well known that the interns just go out every night and party with coke and drinking. Meth is around I’m sure, but it’s not very accepted so it would be kept on the DL.

    Thank you for the response!

  • Not sustainable. After a while you start slipping in performance, people start noticing, no matter how good you are the drinking creeps up an takes over.

  • You'd be amazed at how much you can drink when you get home from work. I walk in the door, grab a glass, fill it with some ice, and pour. I don't stop until bedtime and always keep a full one on my nightstand.

I don't drink during the day when I have work. I have to drive, I have to function, and round the clock drinking wrecks me very fast.

Man im always shocked how fast a bottle of liquor goes. 700ml really isn't that much volume.

  • There's nobody drinking a fifth and going to a conventional job for years at a time....I refuse to believe it...

I was once on a handle a day and able to hold down a full-time retail job that involved a lot of speedy furniture/heavy goods unloading. Granted, I failed the years at a time part and only lasted like 18 months, but still.

Gotta be somebody out there. Probably in Russia.

I think you’d be surprised at what some of the people out there are doing

There's a few of us on this thread. I did it for a couple years, between two jobs. Blue collar work. I'd have 6-10 yuenglings while sipping through half a fifth. Depends on how late I stayed up. I was standing in line behind one of us today I'm sure. Work vest, work truck, "three pints of Taaka and a half pint if you got it". That's damn near a handle of vodka in 4 different bottles and I bet he's drinking it all tonight. The half was for the ride home.

Would just become really tired all of a sudden a need nap, chronically dehydrated...extreme sweating??

I was doing 15 drinks a day (a pintpint of Jack and a 6 pack of Busch light tallboys) everyday for about 2 years. Had to stop one day when I almost passed out because my BP was like 180/100 at work. I was in active withdrawal at 10 in the morning.

  • My standard unit was a pint minimum per night, usually plus a few beers. I did this for about 20 years, usually way more on the weekends and often went back for more. A fifth it would be hard to do this but not impossible

  • Definitely not sustainable because true CA can’t moderate and will overdo it some days. I don’t know how I never got caught but I’ve gone months where I drank shots before work, then slowly nursed a pint of vodka in a Gatorade bottle throughout the day. I think the key is that I had no or few close interactions with coworkers, no presentations, just sequestered in a cubicle, left alone for the most part. And since at those junctures, the work was routine enough or simple enough to be done drunk, it didn’t really matter. When I was younger tho, the only reason I functioned getting blasted with a fifth or more á day for year straight benders was amphetamine prescriptions. I don’t know how else anyone could do it. Well, meth would work too. Thats the only way I can imagine one functioning. Chemical + alcohol

  • Some people have NPC jobs. Perfect for boozing lol

  • 750 ml was never that hard for me for 6-7 years. Hydration, vitamins, and food. Plenty of people have smelled it on me. Things go south quickly if I increase that to a liter+.

Liters = around the clock drinking which as we know, can only last for so long and does not end well..

  • 700ml is manageable, your BAC is hitting zero at some point during the day. Beyond that starts to get a bit squirrely.

As to how? Well you just do, up until you don't and it all falls to pieces. Other people are a lot more likely to take pity on what an abject wreck you are rather than being angry about it.

  • You can until you can’t. It will only be a matter of time.

  • Be good or be good at it.

It never mattered if I was drunk at work as long as I was good at my job.

  • A fifth is easily gone in the evening. I come from work and in an empty stomach I start around 5-6pm and it's finished by about 9/9:30. That's including if I have a hazmat whisky about 60% abv. Obviously I have a low intelligence/paper pushing admin reception job, perfect for my low intelligence brain. Plus my autism spectrum and mental health diagnosis explains erratic behaviour so it's never questioned.
