As we know, Sanderson has made an art out of the “bait and switch” writing style. This is prevalent in most of his works, and has thrown many readers, myself included, for a loop.
He has stated many times that each of these books will be slightly different. What if he was referring to the meaning of “Unite Them” in this manner?
In the first book, Dalinar interpreted the words as uniting the High Princes, which he successfully did (kinda)
Then, it became about Uniting the monarchs, which he managed to do.
Still, the meaning wasn’t fully grasped, as he found himself redefining the proclamation by uniting the three realms into a hot sticky blast of pure investiture
Going forward, I’m sure he’ll discover another meaning of “Unite Them” but I believe it’ll be a play on words. He’s been hearing it all wrong, which is fine because you’re supposed to READ the words. He will discover it was always supposed to be “Untie Me” with an additional silent “I,” where “I” have to be silent enough to hear the bondage spren plea to daddy bondsmith for sweet hot “Unity.” This of course will conclude with Dalinar’s fourth ideal, where he speaks the “Safe Words” and our Bondagesmith is enveloped in warm skin tight shardplate which resembles frilly black leather and latex.

My fellow scholar, you have been deceived by Ruin, he is more subtle than that. For it is Un-tie Them, they have been bound and now must be freed. Moving 1 letter to change the meaning is straight out of Ruin's playbook. It's why Harmony is appealing to the other shards, they can see through Ruin's deception but cannot undo it and are trying to correct it though alternate means.

I was starting to think this actual made since with Dalinar misunderstanding this, but then read a few more words and went to wash my eyes out with bleach.
the dead giveaway was when the stormfather asked Dalinar to “spank them first”
It actually makes perfect sense since a gimpshard plate wouldn’t make sense to have a shardblade which is why the stormdaddy said he wouldn’t be a blade. A gimp is all about receiving pain not giving it. That is the main arc of stormlight, dalinar starts as a top and ends as a bottom.
I initially thought it had something to do with the heralds. That only by uniting them will they be able to overcome Odium, as they may have represented the shattered shard of Honour (thus, uniting them to become a combined power equal to that of another).
Or its something like uniting singers and humans
