Very loosely inspired by Gein. Only the grave robbing, arts and crafts, and rural setting came from Gein. Gein himself has no direct analog in Chainsaw and the story is completely original.
Edit: This is probably common knowledge but Gein also inspired Psycho and Silence of the Lambs. Like with Chainsaw, the inspiration is more broad strokes than the actual Gein story.
Hooper followed up Chainsaw with Eaten Alive (1976) which also drew inspiration from a true crime figure. That time was Joe Ball the Butcher of Elemendorf (aka the Bluebeard of South Texas).
for the mask and rural setting. Everything else is fictionalized. This is one of those things that sounds scary unless you know the Ed Gein story and how little the two have in common.
Defending Ed Gein because you grew up down the road is absolutely wild
Also what can be proven in court does not make it a fact. If he’s confessed to killing two and suspected of 5 others, it’s not a leap to attribute them to him
I mean what are the chances 2 hunters just go missing while hunting right next to his property and right after Gein told them he isn’t happy with them hunting there.
Then what are the chances his neighbors go missing.
So you think he genuinely has only killed one person but somehow coincidentally people next to his property just vanish but he didn’t kill them because he didn’t admit to it?
I mean come on people use your brains lol. It’s fascinating to me how naive and dumb the average person is.
I know that this statement is true, but it always seemed kind of silly. Gein was a fiend for sure, but besides some props in the house, it seemed like a huge stretch.
Yeah especially with all the signage. I learned the other day that the front and back of the original spot was covered in weed plants and part of the production cost was buying out all the seasons yield so there were no horror associations with pot farmers.
When I mentioned that to my late-'60s/early-'70s hippie dad he said a fellow hippie friend of his claimed that he lived in said house before Tobe shot the movie along with other broke potheads of the time. My dad says he's like 50/50 on that story since said friend was always full of shit but fun perspective nonetheless.
You know it was just a movie right? Of course. I was just making sure he knew. I was actually an intern at the Texas film commission in the early 2000s when this was rebooted and had to go on the locations scouting with them to take pictures with a disposable camera and was creeped out.
Currently it is a restaurant you can eat at and enjoy lots of memorabilia from the movie at. They even have someone dress up as Bubba to chase you around.
Yes and no. OP's pic is from the 2003 remake. That one is a private residence. The one that is a restaurant now is the house from the original 1974 movie. It's in Kingsland now but it was in Roundrock when they filmed there.
A couple of years ago I had a weekend to myself from the family. I live in Austin. I had never seen the original. I watched it the night before and then had lunch at the restaurant the next day.
Food was pretty good. A little tough to stomach after watching what was filmed in that house. Haha.
If you are in the area, the gas station from the movie is down in Bastrop. They sell a lot of horror merch and also surprisingly good barbecue. The cemetery from the opening scene is the Bagdad Cemetery in Leander. The rest of the filming locations are gone now, I think.
So they filmed pretty much around that whole area? Any other filming in Leander? I only lived there for a year a few years ago but I wish I knew this info then so I could’ve checked this out lol.
I stayed the night in the original house with some friends and we ate bbq while watching the original and TCM 2. We slept upstairs in grandpa’s room which had been converted to a bar area. It was a great time but I hear the new owners kind of suck and that kind of thing probably won’t happen again.
I have history in Granger, yeah. Not the 74 for sure.
Knew someone close to the family and the family had been forever keeping people off the property because they kept stealing stuff. I think they used to let visitors but too much theft. Doileys(sp?), pieces of the house, etc. Definitely not a restaurant.
Yeah, there is no mistaking the two houses, either. The original house was actually one of those houses you could mail order from Sears in the early 20th C. It was a kit that would come in by rail car to the closest depot.
To this day in the original, that first kill with the sledge hammer where he slides the door open all fast and loud then immediately cracks dude in the fucking face is the most jarring violent scene from a film and actually shook me.
I just watched it for the first time this summer, when the fam was out of town and I was alone and 3 beers down, and when that happened - after that slow build - I will never forget it. I’m pretty sure I yelled Holy Shit out loud to no one.
TCM makes me think of The Sopranos. Two simple ideas perfectly executed at the exact right time. Any change you can think to make only makes it worse, so they can never be be repeated or topped.
The owners seem super welcoming judging by all those signs. And if they’re so bothered by fans visiting because of the movie, they shouldn’t have bought that house lol. sigh
You know it was just a movie right?
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is a work of fiction, but it was heavily inspired by the crimes of real-life serial killer Ed Gei
But Gein committed his crimes in Wisconsin, not Texas.
But 'Wisconsin Chainsaw Massacre' sounds like shitty metal band
Shitty metal is the new good metal
I'd watch Wisconsin Cheesehead Massacre though.
Fun fact - the original working title of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre was "Headcheese."
Sounds like a static x song
I mean…Wisconsin Death Trip
RIP Wayne 😪
Thats basically a Static X album
I'd buy that album. I just hear a more hair metal version of Murderdolls with 7 stirng guitars and double bass pedals.
He’s not wrong, folks
Cheese beware!
And the house burned down
And THAT house was destroyed decades before all of his popularity
Was it in a mansion? Somewhere in Wiscansin.
Don’t cha noe

Indeed. One of Tobe Hooper's main inspirations was a nightmarish Christmas shopping trip.
Arts and crafts is a diabolically hilarious way to describe decorating his house with human remains and making himself a belt of human nipples lol
Ed Gein would be the Martha Stewart of true crime if Martha Stewart didn't already hold the title.
Very loosely inspired.
for the mask and rural setting. Everything else is fictionalized. This is one of those things that sounds scary unless you know the Ed Gein story and how little the two have in common.
“HA! Geiiii!!”
I'm leaving the typo just for this response
It's always weird that Ed Gein is considered a serial killer and only got 2 Confirmed kills.
I mean, he was suspected of 7 others, I highly doubt he only murdered the two women he confessed to killing.
Rookie numbers. 💀
Compared to other popular ones like Gacy, Dahmer, Bundy, Ramírez or BTK yeah
He's not considered a serial killer. It's the horrific contents of his house that made him infamous and that all (mostly) came from his grave robbing.
Yep, then representations like this movie made that even bigger because people sell the idea that it was like this.
Only one confirmed, Bernice Worden.
He only admitted to Mary hogan. They investigated, but it was inadmissible.
He was never charged with Mary's death.
And actually babysat local kids who saw his macabre horror and told their parents who didn't believe them
Ed gein killed one person. Far from a serial killer
He was charged and convicted of killing store clerk Bernice Worden.
He admitted but wasn't charged with killing Mary hogan.
I'll admit though if left unchecked, he'd have alot more bodies under his belt.
But he's not a serial killer.
Source: grew up 5 miles from his property.
Edit: he was charged and was ruled his confession was coerced. Facts are facts
Defending Ed Gein because you grew up down the road is absolutely wild
Also what can be proven in court does not make it a fact. If he’s confessed to killing two and suspected of 5 others, it’s not a leap to attribute them to him
Wow you're dumb if you think that's defending him.
I don’t know if I’d really say “heavily”
I know that this statement is true, but it always seemed kind of silly. Gein was a fiend for sure, but besides some props in the house, it seemed like a huge stretch.
Psycho on the other hand...
Very very loosely inspired by Ed Gein.
Gein only killed two people. He's technically not a serial killer.
He definitely killed more.
Dude didn’t even use a chainsaw.
More like lightly inspired. Just the aspect of Gein using his victims skin to make stuff/masks
You know people are allowed to be creeped out by things that aren't real right?
Yeah especially with all the signage. I learned the other day that the front and back of the original spot was covered in weed plants and part of the production cost was buying out all the seasons yield so there were no horror associations with pot farmers.

Do you know it's just a movie?
You know the title says the "REAL" house, right? The implication was that it was a real event and I the clarification was necessary.
It’s based off the real events of Ed Gein. But a lot of the things in the movie were added.
So was Psycho and silence of the lambs.
Currently it is a restaurant you can eat at and enjoy lots of memorabilia from the movie at. They even have someone dress up as Bubba to chase you around.

This site has all of the filming locations that we know of with then and now pictures and addresses.
I stayed the night in the original house with some friends and we ate bbq while watching the original and TCM 2. We slept upstairs in grandpa’s room which had been converted to a bar area. It was a great time but I hear the new owners kind of suck and that kind of thing probably won’t happen again.

They just wanted peace.
Yeah, there is no mistaking the two houses, either. The original house was actually one of those houses you could mail order from Sears in the early 20th C. It was a kit that would come in by rail car to the closest depot.

That was in the original and not from this house. Still, you are correct, that is an excellent scene.
I just watched it for the first time this summer, when the fam was out of town and I was alone and 3 beers down, and when that happened - after that slow build - I will never forget it. I’m pretty sure I yelled Holy Shit out loud to no one.
The twitching and convulsing of the guy's body was frightening
By real, you mean where they film the movie?
Yes, my apologies. Still creeped me out visiting.
Where are all the wheelchairs and bull skulls laying around like from the game?

Don’t worry, ADT is on it.
LOS VIOLADORES SERÁN PROCESADOS
All these warning signs, and not a single “TRESPASSERS WILL BE CHOPPED UP AND EATEN”
Wow. So now there are two movies partially filmed in my dad's hometown: Texas Chainsaw and True Grit.
I’d hate to own that house. People always showing up.
This looks like the big house from red dead redemption 2
The Braithwaite house! I had the same thought!
It looks so eerie just sitting out in the middle of nowhere
Yo Hombre, its cool if you are dos hombres dawg, it says no tres passing.
Girl friend happen to see my phone while looking at the windmill and nailed me right in the arm!
I’ve been to the MOVIE used house from Amityville… that too is not the real house. Choose better words
TCM makes me think of The Sopranos. Two simple ideas perfectly executed at the exact right time. Any change you can think to make only makes it worse, so they can never be be repeated or topped.
Was this also in left for dead 2?
And red dead redemption 2?
Pretty sure this is for the 2003 remake house
Right by my buddies farm. Sad the house is in shambles.
I seriously thought this was the White House
Granted I'm a tad strange, but I'd live here in a shot lol anyone else or?
The owners seem super welcoming judging by all those signs. And if they’re so bothered by fans visiting because of the movie, they shouldn’t have bought that house lol. sigh
