Is it safe to walk down from Bandon Road to town via Barracks street as a girl approx 7am in the morning? It’s still dark when I’d be leaving so am a bit wary but presume it’s busy enough with commuters at this hour?

  • Around 7am, the street is usually quiet but there are some commuters heading into town. It’s generally safe, but staying alert, walking with confidence, and using well-lit areas is a good idea.

  • As a guy I'm probably not the best to answer - but I'd imagine that's about the safest time time to be out. Anyone likely to cause trouble is likely to be long gone home, maybe I'm naive but I wouldn't expect the trouble-making type to be early risers.

As for the area, I used to live there years ago and it seems to have very much improved over the years; far better than it was.

  • As a fellow female, It looks lonely but youll be grand. Just have the usual general awareness of whats around you, music not to loud in your headphones and walk like youre going to give or just got inconvenient news. You'll be grand.

  • Most streets in the city are safe enough at that hour. I'd advise against between the times of 3am and 6am.

  • I live on barrack st so can only speak of the walk down barrack st into town, I’ve never had any issues as a young woman :)

That’s great to hear thanks very much

  • Absolutely perfect at that time. The streets are busy with deliveries at that time even.

  • Yes it’s safe but don’t forget someone could tell you it’s safe to walk on Patrick street and that one time something could happen so don’t assume cause people said it’s safe your fine just be weary of your surroundings etc I used to work with girls who used to walk through town at night when finish work 99% of the time they were safe but a few times they told me they had guys follow them one had to divert to the Garda station and one girl had to ring her bf to walk towards her to meet her!

I have heard similar stories about early morning commutes to buses etc and have to say it gives me the spooks. Lots of good people out there but I suppose anyone can be lucky with who they meet….

  • I live around the corner and pass the Bandon/Barrack road everyday on my way to work for years and its perfectly safe. Lots of people walking that route, lots of passing cars also.

  • Yup. As safe as anywhere. Usually the only people you see are the 'going to work' crowd and school run drivers.

  • I walk it every day, safe out. Plenty of people out walking and delivering to the area 👍

  • Yes and this is true of every other street in Cork.

  • Yes, I wouldn’t put in on a places to avoid list

Thank you- this was my main concern as I am not too familiar with this area!

The area does look a bit derelict but it’s ok. Lots of students live there and there are 2 popular coffee shops - Alchemy and Box’d

  • Omfg yes you'll be fine. Cork isn't the lawless apocalyptic hellscape this sub makes it out to be.

Women are allowed question their safety, hope this helps!

    no need to curse

I’ve been followed down the street and cat called and screamed at by random men, it’s not the safe utopia you think it is either and you are privileged if you have never had any issues.

  • At that time you could probly walk anywhere in cork but then again I am a male

  • The most dangerous thing you're likely to encounter is a deliveroo rider on the footpath, though maybe not that early in the day.

  • I'm often walking down at about 7.40 when it's often still dark. It's grand. That being said I am a man so my perspective might be different.

  • Use a personal alarm. Keep in your pocket as an added measure. Available on amazon.

  • I’d say you should be safe enough but I wouldn’t wear headphones or anything and keep to the best lit way possible. I’d also carry a small bottle of hairspray or deepheath in your bag/pocket just as a precaution but I would say that walking anywhere in the city at any time, share a location with a friend who might be up at the same time hours as you so they’re aware of where you’re leaving from and what time you should arrive etc xx

  • Yes it’s safe and there’s even Boxd open for coffeee at 7 if coffee will make your walk more enjoyable ☺️

  • Could get yourself one of those loud high pitch alarms, you'll feel much safer

  • The people you’d be worrying about aren’t awake yet so you are definitely safe! Never felt safer walking through town than an early morning, and being deep heat spray just incase <3

  • Watch out for Jimmy the Greek

  • I’ve often done it earlier in the morning & never had any problems

  • There'll be lots of people out at that time, dont worry.

  • It’s safe to walk anywhere in Cork as a girl. It’s not Mogadishu

  • Be careful and watch out for spooks

  • Lass. Think of the worst case scenario. Even if it's. 0.0001 percent its not worth it. If you need to ask you have your answer. It takes one guy. There may be more of them than we know. Its where male and female diverge. Is it common no. Does it happen yes. Is it happening more. Don't know.

mentality like this will result in constant paranoia

While I completely get where you’re coming from and tend to agree, I fear there’s hardly a place with 00% chance ☹️ so have to hedge my bets in some occasions
