If one person says you were near the scene of a murder, it's meaningless in isolation. If a gun belonging to you was linked to a murder, and someone said they saw you nearby, that testimony is super important.
Side note, that is one of the big reasons you don't talk to the police if they want to interview you. Even if you're innocent, you can accidentally give them something that doesn't seem like evidence, but can be used against you.
Hearsay is only relevant for statements offered in court for the truth of their contents, so this could only have been used for investigating and not for proof of guilt. It can be used as evidence that trump was going around making these claims, or that Trump had a habit of referring to little kids as "cunts to be raped" or similar.
