Hello everyone,

I vaguely remember reading somewhere about an ancient language that is considered constructed because of how perfect it was in grammatical/semantic sense, I don't know. It could translate any meaning from any language into its own and retain it without distortion, jokes could also be translated like that.

I don't remember where I found it, I think it was on wikipedia or tvtropes and I still can't find it.

If anyone knows what I'm talking about please let me know I need to find it

  • That sounds like a claim that would be made about Sanskrit

  • There is no such language.

People have told similar stories about various languages, but these stories aren't based on linguisics and aren't supported whatsoever by the evidence. Rather, they're based on religious or mystical belief systems.

Two languages that you might be talking about are Sanskrit and (Quranic) Arabic, though neither fits perfectly.

It's also possible that you're remembering an entirely fictional language, since this is a trope that sometimes appears in sci-fi and fantasy. I'm not aware of any well-developed conlang that makes this claim because the process of developing it would immediately disprove it as a possibility.

I think I've also heard the claim made about archaic Hebrew; there is a lot of old mysticism around the language and numerology applied to it, in the Kabbalah tradition, and it was probably related to that. Though, I suspect it may have been made by people who weren't actually Jewish.

Yeah, that last part is why I added "or mystical" in there, because there is a lot of mystical woo-woo about various "ancient languages" coming from outside of the cultures where those languages are religiously significant. Eat, pray, get a sanskrit tattoo.

  • the only ancient conlang im aware of is balaibalan but i dont think thats correct
