If you're not used to upstairs rooms having the roof line cut in, you're probably more inclined to miss the fact that the blue wall is a wall, and instead see it as a room extending backwards with a blue floor and white walls.
Then you notice that it is, in fact, a wall, and that's momentarily confusing.
If you cover the part of the image that has the actual floor with your hand, close your eyes momentarily, then open them again to look at the photo with that context removed, you may see what looks like a white room with a light blue floor
Right, SF has a lot of older housing stock, so it makes sense that it would be common there.
If you're from a more typical American suburb that's a bunch of single story ranch homes, bi-levels, or newer 2 story houses built with standardized length lumber, you might've never encountered this.
Love how unnecessarily passive-aggressive redditors get that other people don't have the exact same life experience as them. What's even funnier is that you're being passive-aggressive towards someone not having the same experience as you, and the cause of your aggression is the fact they didn't see the same perspective you did.

I scanned the photo from top to bottom, so I had to reevaluate the orientation of the room while I was in the middle of mentally processing the image. Noticing the hardwood at the bottom broke the illusion for me.
I unfortunately did not see the confusing perspective. I also did not realize I was in this sub when I clicked. I just saw I painted a wall. And in my head replied, Yep, you sure did. I wanted to see what other people thought. They were tripping out. I was so confused for a second until I saw the sub. 🤦♂️

As someone whose upstairs has this going on in all rooms, it also didn't confuse me.
Hab das gestern in dem deutschen sub gesehen xD. Da hast du auch die Idee herbekommen das hier hochzuladen. Ich sehe trotzdem nur eine Wand (wohne in nem Zimmer mit Dachschräge und bin das gewohnt)
I seem to be the only one wondering what’s confusing about this. I saw a normal room on first glance

Can you draw it for us

Ya covering the floor is key for this one

I still can't see it. The door and the bucket are stopping me from seeing it. 😅

I saw it as a normal wall first but after reading this I can see it the other way too.
I was able to see it because of this comment. The blue wall appears to be the floor of a room that makes a slight left turn at the threshold
That’s a very good explanation
Best I can get is focusing on the top right corner, then I can start to imagine what they’re saying about painted wall looking like the floor.
Thank you! All I had to do was picture the angles in my loft upstairs and suddenly my eyes saw it 👍
I read your comment then I SAW IT AND NOW I CANT GO BACK
HELP
ME
Naw, no idea what people are on about. I must be missing something...
Do you live in a house where the upstairs rooms have the roof line cut in, or in a place where that's common? That might be an influencing factor.
I'm in SF. Lots of weirdly shaped rooms in houses here.
Right, SF has a lot of older housing stock, so it makes sense that it would be common there.
If you're from a more typical American suburb that's a bunch of single story ranch homes, bi-levels, or newer 2 story houses built with standardized length lumber, you might've never encountered this.
So in your the gray wall and bucket. Then you’ll see it. I was so confused
At first glance, I thought the ceiling was still part of the wall.
The grey slab is a wall, not a floor.
And why is that confusing?
cool, you don't see it. I and plenty of others can see the perspective based illusion.

This was a good one. This might help some people.

Thank you! I was really having trouble seeing the grey area as a wall
Wow that’s a huge help! I don’t know why I couldn’t see the damn wall!
The camera angle and perspective is truly very weird.
Yessss!! Thank you!
lmao, totally wrong. this post is awesome.
Absolute mind fuck lmao
What do you see? I can't see anything confusing
If you cover the part of the image that has the actual floor with your hand, close your eyes momentarily, then open them again to look at the photo with that context removed, you may see what looks like a white room with a light blue floor

The wall looked like floor. A very weird floor and had to look twice reall good to actually understand the wall lmao
Man thats trippy
whoa holy shit it took me a second to sort out what i was seeing! i normally get these fast but this one actually threw me off
You monster
Would you happen to be a cyotee?
Coyote*
People here talking about how they can't see anything or they see a floor. Meanwhile I am here sitting thinking it's a roof
I unfortunately did not see the confusing perspective. I also did not realize I was in this sub when I clicked. I just saw I painted a wall. And in my head replied, Yep, you sure did. I wanted to see what other people thought. They were tripping out. I was so confused for a second until I saw the sub. 🤦♂️
Did you paint the wall into a corner?
What is the confusing thing here ?
I think if you're not used to having the roof line cutting into your upstairs rooms, then you would be more inclined to see the wall as a floor extending backward.
As someone whose upstairs has this going on in all rooms, it also didn't confuse me.
Ah yes it's also very common to me, it may explain that
Thank you!! I could not get it
I'm guessing the grey painted slab is wall, but looks like floor.
Fish eye?
The paint bucket looks very distorted
I don't think so, we have paint buckets like that in Germany (theyre oval not a circle)
Looks like it was taken in 0.5 mode
You did not paint a wall, I did and you stole the picture.
That tripped me up
Floorwall
Sure that’s not a wall?
I had to turn my phone sideways to see the “confusion” but yes, now I see it
Dudeeee when my brain figured it out it was like I got dizzy
Took me a while
I don't get it
My bedroom has like 3 walls cutting in so I had no idea what the illusion was here at first 😭
Hab das gestern in dem deutschen sub gesehen xD. Da hast du auch die Idee herbekommen das hier hochzuladen. Ich sehe trotzdem nur eine Wand (wohne in nem Zimmer mit Dachschräge und bin das gewohnt)
Are you... sure?
Took me ages but focus on the door on the left
You gotta post the second pic
How is this confusing at all?
In a way the grey part can look like the floor of another small room or corridor
Thank god for that shadow the bucket made.
It took my brain so long to see it
Reminds me of the room in "Dreams in the Witch House" by HP Lovecraft
once you see it, you can't unsee it.
Yeah I saw hallway
So this is what all those robo vacuums are seeing
My eyes are telling me that's the floor not the wall 🤔
I was 100% convinced this was a floor until I turned phone on an angle.
If you look to the top left corner it’s a wall. If you look at top right corner it’s the floor. But it could be the ceiling at this point!
The door to the left oriented the perspective for me.
