10 paragraphs in and Christmas has already been “saved” by his father in law. Presumably because he owned, and was capable of using, a flat head screwdriver.
We probably shouldn't be annoyed at this sad sack too much, he's just a grifter, but more so the "journalists" spreading his story. Even if it's the Daily Fail, we should hold our journalists to such a higher standard.
That this is a news article is stupid but there is actually an issue here! If Currys said it was a plug in oven e.g. a 13 Amp appliance but actually it was a 16 (or 32) Amp appliance and they went ahead and added a plug it would trip the fuse.
Having said that, most ovens if they need a plug are by law meant to come with one now - the only time they don't is usually when they are not designed for a plug, because they are European and designed for 15 Amp circuits.
Those ones often say "DO NOT FIT A PLUG" to them, and need to be hard wired in - and it's how most ovens were installed up until maybe 10 years ago anyway.
Also from my experience, Currys and other websites are AWFUL at detailing the power requirements and whether an appliance comes with a plug or not. Even the manufacturers often don't say. I guess that's why they offered some compensation here - which would more than cover the cost of an electrician if he's really so hopeless he can't wire a plug.
He’s definitely not going to be the butt of a million jokes at work, down the pub, amongst his childrens’ peers (a non-zero number of whom can probably wire a plug).
No sir. He will be treated with empathy, dignity, and respect as a result of this story, I guarantee* it.

It’s a Christmas miracle.
The two children under the age of five wouldn't give a fuck if they had beans on toast for Christmas dinner. In fact they'd probably prefer it!
What a whiney bitch.
Good job his father in law possesses basic life skills.

He got £175 that's more than most electricians would charge to just wire it in.
Embarrassing.
Nice to see local papers really leaning into obvious rage bait
Isn’t that fairly common when buying an oven? Gives you the option to wire it into a fixed spur.
Some are 16A so they can’t provide a plug.
christ, he deserves his Christmas to be ruined every year
can't believe someone from Currys sent it 3 times and then gave him £175 in compensation
Because he cannot wire a plug ?
Because it's not supposed to have a plug. It's supposed to hard wired.

Looks like this one: https://www.currys.co.uk/products/indesit-clickandclean-io-232h-w-electric-oven-white-10280156.html
Currys say it has a plug, Indesit say it doesn't on the product data sheet. However both agree it is a 13A oven.
Waiting for the second article when that pesky 3 Amp fuse gives out halfway through cooking the turkey 🤣
£175 doesn’t cover the stress? How do you monetise stress?
Dude deserves his Christmas to be cancelled TBH, along with the journalist.
When ignorance and laziness intersect.
Pretty sure my oven arrived without a plug too, should have complained and got myself £175 rather than just let the electrician hard wire it in
So he buys an oven that is supposed to be hard wired and claims he’s stressed because it doesn’t have a plug?
What a knob.
Depends! From the article: `Martin added “it’s the principle", because the oven clearly stated it comes with a UK plug.`
If Currys are selling an appliance that needs wired into a 16Amp fuse but labeling it as a plug-in appliance then he's got a point
https://www.currys.co.uk/products/indesit-clickandclean-io-232h-w-electric-oven-white-10280156.html
It still says on their website
"ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION: This product can be plugged into a standard 13 Amp socket."
Doesn't say it has a plug fitted though and he could have fitted one himself if he wasn't a complete moron.
Wait, the oven is £159? And Curry's gave him £175 compensation?
Fucking hell, how did they survive as a company this long?
Yeah. I call bullshit on this
Under specification, it says: Power supply: 13 Amp plug fitted.
Not that I am defending the bellend, it isn't hard to fit a plug.
"Martin, who is a financial advisor"
Not sure I'll be rushing for his "advice"

I have no idea what I'm looking at without a pointing finger 🤷🏼♂️
