You should read about the Southern Strategy, because I think that explains well where modern conservatives views come from. The Southern Strategy was a plan created by conservative think tanks in the 70s to attract white voters in the South by appealing to racism. People in Nixon's orbit were highly involved in it.

Last year, I moved in with my mother and my stepdad of 6 years. Over the past year, I've learned more about my stepdad's political beliefs and I've heard him say some pretty racist shit. My brother in law is also racist and very openly homophobic. Like, the dude talks shit about other people's sexualities on a daily basis. Of course, this is small town Missouri, so it is the norm unfortunately.

Do racists ever proclaim that they are racist? Wouldn't be surprised if even the KKK used to spin that they were actually the victims somehow.
I understand it's a learned behavior but sometimes I wonder if it's a mental illness too because the way racists obsess 24/7 over the groups they hate is just weird as fuck to me.

I knew a really racist person who was a member of the PSL, but he was also a really weird human being, because he was like a mixture of a white supremacist and an authoritarian communist, like he would praise Stalin and Lenin and Pol pot but he also likes Nick Fuentes racial views.

I think it’s a lack of self awareness. I too didn’t think I was racist…even though looking back when I was conservative…that shit was baked into me and I had no clue that was racism…it’s hard to explain

Empathy is powerful ..if u felt even the slightest bit of empathy u wouldnt support trump. Its not possible...even if u try to repress it or distance yourself (which im sure a lot of people do because all of this is so distressing to watch and hear).
Ignoring or downplaying feelings of empathy..it doesnt erase it. You still wouldnt be able to support trump.
Only the inability to feel it would allow it.
I can confirm this as someone with MAGA family who does not filter what they say around me. They go to church on Sunday then spew racial slurs on monday. Every immigrant is a criminal, every homeless person is a drug addict, the only right faith is Christianity (in their opinion).

I'm an American conservative, in some sense, perhaps not MAGA - I'm not happy with Trump in every regard. But certainly it would be nice to make America great, perhaps even great again.
When I see posts like this, I just think how many don't actually understand how their compatriots think. Either because they are too blinded by narrative, too consumed by hatred, or too ignorant/apathetic to other's experience.
The endpoint of conservative is and always has been fascism. At least people are finally realising that.
I used to have an uncle who was a mean, unrepentant racist basically his entire life. Never hid it in front of anyone. It was awful. His wife (my aunt) was one of the sweetest people I’ve ever met around others, and was actually worse than him behind closed doors. Would tear people to shreds behind closed doors.
He died about 15 years ago, and I flew across the country to go to his funeral. She died two years ago, I was living close, and never even considered going to her funeral.
My uncle was a piece of shit asshole. But at least he was honest with everyone else, and most importantly himself, about it. My aunt never was.
If you’re gonna be this way, at least have the courage to live it. There’s no more foul combination in the world than hatred and cowardice.

It’s weird that white supremacist groups and self identifying neo Nazis are all MAGA supporters. Now one could make the claim that not all conservatives are racists, but all racists are conservative. I recently watched a white supremacist documentary and they were SO happy about Trump winning because they feel validated and heard that he and his admin share the same beliefs they do….
Now why would anyone even want to be associated with being part of a set of beliefs or political movement where the objectively the worst people of society are huge supporters? Shouldn’t that be a red flag for anyone supporting Trump?

And sooo uneducated. I just had an exchange with a MAGAt about antifa. I asked if they supported fascism. After going around and around they said no. I told them that they are then antifa. They replied that antifa is a fascist organization. OMG! The lack of brain power is astounding.
They think we don’t realize it’s just one example. If we blew open an entire communications platform like telegram or signal, we’d see that it’s …all of them. I’ve seen stuff exactly like this for years when “private” conversations have been passed along to me. It isn’t isolated or special. This just illustrates the problem with trying to fit everyone in a binary system.
We’ve rejected it with gender, but we still do it with politics. More than ever, perhaps.
People have to choose between democrat and republican, even though most are somewhere in the middle. And because the parties contain so many different people, if you oppose a party you just point to the worst members and if you support a party you point to the best members.
I don’t think it’s particularly helpful.
