It sucks that we're all so surprised by how good it is. He used to be a personal favorite, but his work has felt fairly "phoned in" for a lot of years now
He’s been doing watercolors for years that are mind blowing. Agree that his pencils don’t look as clean as they used to, though. Can’t tell whether it’s him or Williams…
I mean—he’s an outstanding artist. As I said, his very recent covers and interiors don’t look quite right, but he also does stuff like this (this is a few years old):
The “stuck in early 2000s” coloring is SO BAD for his work - and I believe he does his own watercolors over his pencils (ex; flashbacks in Hush). The watercolor look is so much better with his style.
My favorite Jim Lee artwork is always when he watercolors his work. There’s something so much more serene about it than his digitally colored work. Not that I’m against digital coloring obviously, but these watercolors gel so well with his pencils
Sketch then paint over. I'm fairly certain the whites on super girl's costume are using whitening liquid and not negative space, but the bigger white patches are negative space. But hard to tell.
Yeah this is the kind of details I want to learn. I've taken a couple of water colour classes, so I'm somewhat familiar with a handful of techniques but just viewing this picture I'm noticing there is a lot that I still to learn. Mastering the techniques is something entirely different.
Its beautiful, but i think the shading is odd. Like the sun is behind her, but she is not backlit, instead the light source looks like it's coming from the left.
I do have to wonder how much of the problem of Hush2 is Jim Lee being "slow" versus Loeb not being able to turn out a decent enough script. He's slowed down his on-stream drawing, but the art that has come out for the series looks...standard, to the point where it almost feels phoned in. And even as CCO at DC he's done monthly books at a decent pace before; it kinda feels like he just doesn't really want to do Hush2 on some level.
This is Jim Lee's?! It looks great!

His inked Black & White artworks looks amazing too.
I think is the colouring.

Wolverine and Psylocke
EDIT dunno why link is failing. Just search google images for “Jim Lee Watercolor” you’ll find tons of great work going back years.
Here you go. Psylocke and Wolverine Watercolor by Jim Lee
The link decided to not work.
Best piece of artwork Jim Lee has put out in the last years, this is so much better than his usual stuff !
Hard agree. I know people love his usual style, but it's refreshing to see that he knows how to use other mediums effectively.
Looked at the pic before I read the full title. This being a Lee piece shocked tf out of me.
It's amazing how much better Lee's art looks painted with watercolor styles. Batman Europa was like that too. Digital coloring is so bad for him

Digital colouring is bad for a lot of artists.
This
Woah, wait, this water color with no beefcake or cheesecake is by Jim Lee? Dude has talent and skill and versatility he rarely shows.
Jim's inker and colorist are holding him back
Gorgeous. Happy to see JL try different stuff!
This is Jim Lee!!!??
Looks at coat wrinkle
That's Jim Lee
Wow. To see such a cool transition in an artist. I wish Fan Cons had more of this.
Jim Lee is still the boss. I've been a fan for more than 30 years.
Jim Lee turning into Alex Ross was not on my bingo card.
But God how I would like a series of covers in this style from him.
More David Mack than Alex Ross. This is nothing like Ross…

How do you paint something like this? Does he have a video?

You'll enjoy this then!
You can see faint pencil lines. So pre-sketch, then build-up
Gorgeous!
The last like 10 years Lee has been experimenting a lot more especially with coloring and it’s fucking gorgeous and also inspiring
Jim Lee and his signature Gambit's coat! Great work!
Its beautiful, but i think the shading is odd. Like the sun is behind her, but she is not backlit, instead the light source looks like it's coming from the left.
This is gorgeous.
It's like what if Supergirl was mentored by John Constantine for a year 😂
Oh damn something I didn’t believe possible happened. I like a piece by Jim Lee
But can’t finish Hush.
That’s fine. This piece is better than anything he’s put out for the past five years and Hu2h is at the bottom the trash heap.
