Aquaman isn't content with being the lord of the oceans, so he's taking to the stars to find new and interesting fish to boss around. In March 2026, the current Aquaman comic is going to be renamed Emperor Aquaman and he'll be traveling the cosmos. Because when I think of Aquaman, I think of space travel.

  • Even if it's a miss, at least they're trying something new.

DC feels like they are letting creators try anything they want. Just a vast quantity of stories told different ways in different genres.

Meanwhile Marvel feels the least inspired they have ever been and everything is so unambitious and stuck in an boring house style.

True. I even stopped reading Spider-man, and I've been reading him since the 90's.

Marvel is absolutely in the worst state they’ve been since I started reading comics in 2009

I stopped reading comics around 1999/2000 I think. After Heroes Reborn and Onslaught... Everything seemed so lame after (I also went from Junior High to High School at this time and that might have hadpre to do with it than the quality of the comics lol

I got back into comics about a decade later with The Boys, Invincible, The Walking Dead, 30 Days of Night, Uncanny X-Force, and Deadpool and Punisher

Nah, it’s not just you. The late 90s were a really bad time for Marvel, probably its actual worst period. The Clone Saga, Onslaught, and Heroes Reborn left all the major franchises in rubble. The stories were the absolute dregs. It’s actually amazing that Marvel managed to climb out of that creative pit.

I remember loving all of those things and Age of Apocalypse, but don't really remember anything after

Why does every DC thread always have someone going "Oh, DC is doing something interesting? Here's why that means Marvel sucks."

Like, I don't disagree but it gives off such a negative tone. Let's just keep the focus on DC doing good shit.

Because I'm passionate about comics and would like both major companies to produce good content. Making the direct comparison and talking about it is the only way that Marvel will get better.

Why talk about Playstation when discussing Xbox's failures? Talking about the successes and failures of the two giants of major industry is natural.

Meanwhile Marvel feels the least inspired they have ever been and everything is so unambitious and stuck in an boring house style.

Am I a joke to you?

    -The Ultimate Universe

Off the top of my head: Killing most of the mutants, Superior Spider-Man, House of X, The current One shot Fantastic Four series. There are plenty of good stuff on both sides.

Superior Spider-man was almost a decade ago. Last year's mini sucked.

House of X ended like 2 years and THREE reboots ago.

Don't act like killing almost all the Mutants isn't something Marvel has done multiple times.

Ultimates was good, but they are ending the only good line they have going.

You are a joke to me, legit arguing Marvel is good by bringing up stuff that happened years ago. I grew up a Marvel fanboy, but being a blind fanboy won't make Marvel fix their glaring issues.

Downvote all you want. Its the truth.

You are a joke to me, legit arguing Marvel is good by bringing up stuff that happened years ago.

Yes, House of X and FF one shot series and Ultimate universe and House of X was years ago. I didn't realize that 2024, (the ending of HOX/POX) was so far into the past. Jonathan Hickman straightened up the XMEN continuity sure, marvel messed it back up but that happens in comics. Ahem, New 52 and Court of Owls.

I'm not saying it'll be bad but sending a man who's power primarily relies on water isn't the best idea. Let's not pretend otherwise.

I mean ultimately I'm not adding an Aquaman book to my pulls. I'm sure the writer has good sci-fi story to tell, but can't justify the cost.

More just commenting on the state of both companies heading into 2026 and what their creative ethos are.

I'm sure DC editorial isnt force a space Aquaman story, its probably creator drive.

Meanwhile Marvel forces creators to send someone to space as a way to drive sales.

Idk. Just how it looks from my seat.

I'm certain they have a good idea, but IMO DC has struggled to make Aquaman relevant for years. From having to chop his hand off and giving him a trident, to having him grow a beard and even having him be the cool quippy one in the JL movie. Non of that didn't seem to help him out much.

If you think about The Terror Beyond episode of Justice League Cartoon and how Lovecraft mythos relate to Deep Ocean, I think it fits. Aquaman could face a new Cosmic Horror villain, even Cthulhu itself.

That's more or less what Ram V did in Aquaman Andromeda, but I definitely wouldn't mind seeing more of that aspect!

Like dipping “Black Panther: Intergalactic” in Tartar sauce?

Aquaman on a planet that is entirely ocean full of alien fish, alien cephalopods , and alien ocean mammals would be cool AF imo

I like the idea of a cosmic bond he has with all aquatic wildlife in the universe. Kinda like the red in animal man

Space and Oceans have long been linked so it makes sense I guess but does still feel a bit odd...feels like when Black Panther went Intergalactic.

They are certainly trying everything possible to make Aquaman Cool. This is even more aggressive then when they put Geoff Johns on the Title.

  • Interesting. Have every Aquaman book published, and it’s always on my sub list. Can’t say space opera Aquaman was on bingo card, but can never hurt to see something new (except for that Bunn Era costume).

People always say that Aquaman is DC's Namor but I wonder if a better comparison is that he's DC's Black Panther. I mean the Namor thing makes sense, water and stuff, but Namor plays a very different role in Marvel; he's a wildcard, depending on goals he could be a hero allied with the X-Men or a villain allied with Doom it really is just a matter of circumstance. His first epic battle was against another hero, the Human Torch and his defining trait is arrogance. That is not the role that Aquaman plays in DC where he is indisputably a hero and quite a bit more humble than Namor despite carrying a crown as well. His conflict rather is the balancing of his responsibilities and with the accompanying politics of his station, something that the more despotic Namor handles less than T'Challa does. The Black Panther and Aquaman character conceptions are noticeably different but the role they play in their universe are more similar.

With that being said, having Aquaman be the Black Panther analogue makes a nice match considering that space-Aquaman seems to fit along nicely as a companion to intergalactic Wakanda.

This was well put and I agree. With that being said, Aquaman, Black Panther, and Namor are all characters I don't really get excited over regardless of whether they are in space or on earth or whatever.

Something about heroes in a feudal system just doesn't grab my interest. I prefer my heroes to be more anarchical and less prestigious and dutiful, and more street level "play by their own rules"  anti-hero l I guess.

I am more interested in guys like Punisher, Deadpool, Daredevil, Wolverine, Hulk, Venom and Spider-man. None of them are kings or royalty. Just flawed dudes with their own sense of morality doing what they think is the right thing to do.

What's some good Aquaman runs for a beginner?

Aquaman by Geoff Johns, perfect intro to Aquaman since it's new 52 so no prior knowledge needed and Johns is very aware of the stigma around Aquaman being a lame who talks to fish and he totally flips that on it's head by giving him some super badass moments, especially with the justice league crossover event throne of Atlantis.

  • I'm actually down with this. Making him a fish out of water to such an extreme degree sounds fun.

  • Comic fans can be so lame sometimes. Some of u get freaked out at anything outside the norm. No wonder it’s such a cyclical medium

  • That’s so sick actually. Very excited to see how it’s executed

  • Ehhhh, space is often thought of in naval terms (space marines, space navy, even space whales are a common trope) so I’m cautiously optimistic

  • Oh that's exciting, I'll for sure give that a try

  • Hey, I'm down for it. It's something different at least. I'm also waiting for the eventual Aquaman/Green Lantern crossover since Adams is writing both books.

  • Does this mean there's going to be a new mainline Aquaman series helmed by a different team or is this simply just a title change to differentiate the vibe? I feel like it's probably just the latter since it's an in-universe continuation of the story but would love some clarity.

Anyways, I've been absolutely loving the Adams/Timms run so I'm fairly confident this new series is going to be stellar (lol) and I can't wait to see what they're going to do!

Probably just imply that Jackson is taking care of business on earth. It's not like Aquaman is consistently top of Sales or anything, they might as well go big

  • There’s famously a lot of fish and water in space. Everyone knows that.

Cheap dig aside, this looks cool.

You seen the Ahsoka Star Wars show? Space whales!

  • First Black Panther, now Aquaman 😂

  • Fishbreath has always been jealous of T'challa. Copying his intergalactic empire shtick.

  • I’m down for this because it’s fucking Aquaman. I love Aquaman, I have this book on my pull list and enjoy it very much, but it’s Aquaman. No one cares about Aquaman. He’s a character where creators should just be allowed to do whatever the fuck they want because he’s not bringing in a lot of readers anyway. So I say fuck yeah to Space Aquaman. Sounds fun.

  • Intergalactic city of Atlantas

  • I wonder if it's related to the 1v1 with hawkman, where he reveals he can control water within someones body, makes sense he'd have to go fight enemies without water content

  • Considering Cthulu and Maturin could be considered aquatic type characters, this could really work.

  • i am....kind of shocked but pleasantly onboard with this

  • STAR OCEAN!!1!11!!!!1!

  • Not exactly where I thought Adams would progress but it's still in-line with his dark tide prophecy, hopefully as it becomes more experimental Adams becomes more comfortable with the series.

  • Is he gonna fight with space water or something

  • I’m down, fuck it. I think Aquaman is rad, and the dude is way more powerful than he’s given credit for. Think about how much control he could have over the global economy by fucking with oceanic conditions and just delaying shipping schedules by a few weeks. Send a cargo ship of ICBMs to the wrong country.

He could really, really mess up the world, but he doesn’t. It’ll be an interesting storyline if nothing else.

  • Welp the theory that arthur is slowly being turned evil is making sence if this is happening in a certain way

  • Well, the void of space is in a way, an ocean

  • the right wing cousin of future state aquaman

  • Because it worked so well with Black Panther

    Totally different things

Taking the king of a fantasy kingdom on earth and making them an emperor in space? The story may be totally different, but the premise is similar enough.

Almost anything can work with the right people in charge
