If it’s anything like how the rooster we used to have would attack other birds:
Rooster plants his foot on the back of the other birds neck, basically putting it in the join between the roosters ankle, and that big talon they have on the back.
Then he drives their head into the ground and holds them there while he picks the feathers off the back of their head. We had to save so many poor birds from him. He honestly deserved what the weasels did to him eventually.
Hens will naturally bite each other to establish a “pecking order” hierarchy. This whole thing happens whenever a new chick ages up, or a new hen gets introduced. On a larger free-range farm, it can seem like it’s happening perpetually.
And then on top of that, I’ve heard from some farmers that chickens on a low protein diet will also take bites out of each other because they crave meat. I haven’t seen that myself with my own chickens, but I don’t doubt it.
My parents kept chickens and one got a cut on her crown and the others would peck at the open wound because the iron from blood supplemented their diet or some crazy shit.
So this stuff saved her life, cause they would've kept pecking until there was nothing but bones.
Not if you care for them properly. I've had dozens of chickens and have never had any issue with cannibalism, other than them eating their eggs. As long as they get a balanced diet they stay out of trouble for the most part (besides roosters).
Yeah the problem is in factory farms they start pecking at stuff to "relax" cause being cramped is stressful and sometimes if they peck one chicken too much they die. One common solution on factory farms is to mutalate the bird's beak so they can't peck other birds.
They can act pretty dumb if they don't have the right setup or coop. They need to have red light bulbs to calm them down and stop them from attacking others. Back before electricity some farmers made tiny red sunglasses for them to wear because it had the same effect
Apparently putting hundreds of chickens in a small space causes some shenanigans. (It can still happen otherwise but far from as common as most causes can be monitored and prevented)
What's the comedy? Chickens are vicious and will peck at and eat each other if you don't do something. Separate coops are expensive, and this seems like it is "easy-to-use".
To someone who's not familiar with chicken keeping, it can be shocking to see "reduces cannibalism" so casually written. I live in a small rural town now, but I grew up in a very urban area with no farms or anything. After I moved, the first time I ever saw this on sale at Agways I was like "it's for WHAT?!"
Great point. Chickens are only vicious when pushed into that sort of environment.
Around me we have some farms with terrible conditions like that, but we also have a handful of families who keep a few chickens for eggs and whatnot. If you only have a handful of hens, you can get a nice comfortable coop where they have separate nesting boxes and roosts.
Those hens are doing well and wouldn't need this product.
It's because of factory farming. When chickens have enough space they have complex social structures. Chickens have their own language with 73 different localization that mean different things. People will do similar things when you put them in environments like that too.

Chicken cannibalism is a real and serious thing apparently.
they dgaf about other birds in general. once had a pigeon that would show up at our house randomly and hang out near the coop
chickens tore him to bits, no clue how they even caught the poor guy
Chickens can be fucking brutal. Snakes, other birds, other chickens, mice/rats, they'll fuck shit up.
The amount of ground squirrels my chickens have taken out this past year has kept my garden looking lush and healthy lol
I read it as squirrels your chickens have ground
It's over, Squirrel, I have the chicken ground
I think that’s what they meant
Chickens make dinosaurs even more scary.
If emus and cassowaries are anything to go by, we’d be fucked.

That last part is great lmao
i think the "hang out near the coop" bit is a clue
but little bro had functioning wings…why didn’t he simply fly away?
People don't realize that chickens will grab other birds and hold them down to kill them. Even other chickens.
Sauce:
Raised chickens my whole life
To bits you say?
I used to have chickens and theyd eat baby snakes like they were noodles
As children my cousins and I used to catch frogs out of the stock pond and toss them into the coop. Good ol’ redneck entertainment at Grandma’s.
Our chickens eat mice like oreos... unless we notice them running around with the prey in beak and intervene.
Chickens sound metal as fuck, I want to keep some
My dad used to spray my brother with this and it worked pretty well
You need to elaborate on the "Brother" part.
No, it's the "used to" part I'm concerned about.
It only reduces cannibalism afterall
headshrinkers get a pass with this one
So his brother's missing his ears. And eyes. And a few fingers. So what? You can survive without those...
You only forget once
Brother, may I have some oats?
No.

That's why my dad said not to trust brands that say they have vegetarian fed chicken.
They skimp out in their proper diet. And well yes they could probably do a high protein veggie diet, but we all know corporations won't.
My cousin has her own chickens that are totally free range and fed proper and her eggs are always so good.
i’ve seen it, housemate had chickens and wasn’t feeding them enough, it was sad :/
My parents kept chickens and one got a cut on her crown and the others would peck at the open wound because the iron from blood supplemented their diet or some crazy shit.

Chickens are one of the clearest pieces of evidence that dinosaurs evolved into birds - they behave like tiny raptors.
Not if you care for them properly. I've had dozens of chickens and have never had any issue with cannibalism, other than them eating their eggs. As long as they get a balanced diet they stay out of trouble for the most part (besides roosters).

Happens with pigs, too. Hence why the tails may be cut off.
As opposed to human cannibalism which is not very serious
Ofcourse.
They can act pretty dumb if they don't have the right setup or coop. They need to have red light bulbs to calm them down and stop them from attacking others. Back before electricity some farmers made tiny red sunglasses for them to wear because it had the same effect
If everyone was made of chicken I am positive this would be a bigger issue.
They're just delicious. Poor fuckers.
*cluckers
They instinctively peck at red
Apparently putting hundreds of chickens in a small space causes some shenanigans. (It can still happen otherwise but far from as common as most causes can be monitored and prevented)
We need to ourlaw it
It’s awful. I’ve walked into chicken cannibalism more than once. The single out the weakest bird and beat it to death. Vicious birds
Does it work for humans? I’m not interested.
Spraying Hannibal Lecter with this so he doesn’t eat people anymore
Hey! *pss* Stop it! *Pss pss pss* Bad boy, put that leg down *pss*
I think it's spraying everyone with this so Hannibal Lecter doesn't eat them
Then I will put it in the water supply
if you see somebody has tea tree oil at home, you can be sure they are cannibals
The Germans need to start adding this into their drinking water like fluoride.

what in the fuck
Chicks need a mama hen to protect them from the other adult chickens.
Same vibe

Long
I really love that it only promises a reduction in cannibalism.
It's pretty hard to stop once you get a taste tbf
Tastes like chicken
It's important to set expectations
Less chicken the chickens eat more chicken I get to eat. Simple as
I prefer the flavor of chicken-fed chicken myself. More chicken per chicken that way
Chicken2
Or maybe "nested chickens"
chichicken
Chickens are so fucking stupid goddammit
Darwinian sociopaths, the lot of them.
Why don't chickens wear underwear? Because their peckers are on their heads.

The world at large is not aware of what monsters Chickens are to their own kind
Chickens can be vicious, but straight up cannibalism is only due to the terrible, cramped conditions most chickens live in ( and malnutrition).
Great point. Chickens are only vicious when pushed into that sort of environment.

but it can’t prevent it
NO PICK'N FOR YOU!
Fun Fakt. If a chicken sees another one bleeding for any reason what so ever it will sometimes immediately peck it to death :3
Reduces. Not eliminates. Reduces.
Yep ive used this stuff its hit or miss
I guess that's a problem when you're bred to be delicious.
It’s not unusual to give chickens KFC leftovers. They don’t care

Yes! Finally! Hooray!
Ehh I fail to see the comedy here.
“Honey, get the anti-cannibal spray.”
