There's also the theory that it's recursive. The AI trains off of AI images, so the piss tint starts to become a more foundational part of it's training.
It's the same reason why AI image styles like "painting" or "cartoon" have become so homogenized in the last couple years, compared to the early days that had a much larger variety of visuals.

it's almost 100% intentional, basically only gpt-image-1 has it. kinda stupid of them to think that everyone would like their images yellow tinted and grainy or whatever.. you can try to prompt it out but its annoying and still looks plastic and fake, although the instruction following got way better. the whole technology is really interesting if you look into it, and the technological progress is rapid. I'm liking the gemini-3-pro-image-preview much more, it still has a heavy bias towards very generic looking artstyles (cartoon, oil painting you mentioned) but if you force it to avoid it somehow the results are really high quality, base world understanding and overall instruction following is great! but I'm of course hoping to see these new cutting edge models as open source and locally run and not proprietary

I mean, even in the original art that kid is way too polished to be a starving child about to steal food. It's not like humans are immune to "It can't look too unappealing too, this image still has to do well with the general audience".
Well it's titled "the first theft". Presumably the kid hasn't been on the streets too long. Maybe he's more disheveled and acquired more rat friends after the tenth theft.
I didn't understand the reaction to this, there are elements that are definitely better in the AI version: use of colour and lighting to make it warmer to contrast with the kid, the baker's face etc. The original also doesn't make it obvious that the kid is behind the glass outside. The downgrade is that the kid's face is more generic and doesn't portray the tortured expression in the original.
I'm pro-AI art but no, the original artist did a far superior job conveying the ideas in the art-piece itself than the schmuck using AI and there are very many reasons for this:
you can tell his fingers are squished against the glass on the original artwork. it is missing in the AI one. in fact, in the AI one he's inside the store. the colouring and lighting of the original is also superior: the greyish background and the seller in the shadow greatly contrast with the lighting on the boy and the loafs of bread, which is what the artist intended for you to focus on. the AI transformed image has lost that element of the art completely, and fucks it up even more by putting the piss filter on it (the situation does not call for warmth - it is supposed to represent despair. the boy being noticable pale is possibly meant to represent a symptom of hypoglycemia - in other words, he's starving!). the mice are also completely fucked in the AI transformed image and lost all their meaning, going from being an angel/demon on the shoulder to... just two mice. the details on the clothing (like the sewing lines, the embroided bit of bread on the worker, the coat, the bible in the bag) also vanished in the transformation. the bag itself also got fucked up. the eroded bits of the table and the cracks in the street are toned down or gone in the AI transformation. the AI also missed other details like the lack of a shadow for the price sign in the middle, and for some reason turned the worker more androgynous (or into a man)? this is also while disregarding the change in style that also just happens to be less suited for depictions of these scenarios.
in short: many details are missing, are toned down or are disregarded in the AI transformation. it is in no way superior to the original due to this reason and is thus slop.
This is mostly an accumulation of things I've seen on the internet This is the most recent I've seen, though it doesn't have the iconic piss filter, but an equally irritating generic isekaislop filter
