Last week I upgraded to Version 142.0.7444.220 (Official Build) (64-bit). Since that time my Workspace account displays the message "Can't Be Used with Android Apps." Google Support, rather than assisting, has been fighting me on this issue. After battling this for multiple days, I am looking for any insights anyone might have.

  • On Sunday, a technician assisted me with setting multiple login permissions for Android in the Workspace Admin, and it said it would take 24 hours to propagate the change. He advised me this was due to a security change.
  • Monday, no change, re-contacted Support. After a fairly lengthy Google Meet session, she said that Google had multiple reports of this, and she would send me an email with the requested screenshots, logs, etc. I did not receive the email for several hours.
  • Upon receipt of the email, it said the behavior is normal, and the Workspace account can never access the Play Store or Android Apps when logged in under a standard Google account. She will not back off of this. I have even sent screenshots from another device, providing objective evidence that this is false and she will not accept it.

I have requested Escalation of this ticket and she is refusing to do so. Has anyone experienced this issue? Has anyone found a fix?

Thanks in advance.

  • if it means anything i have a chromebook with 2 accounts - they're not company gmail- and if I sign into the second account, I can't access that account's play store and android apps I do have access to gmail, voice, drive, etc though.

Interesting so if you go into the Play Store. go to top right where the account icon is, you can not switch accounts?

you misunderstand. i have one chromebook, sharing two accounts. depending on who sign into first that account will not have access to the second accounts play store and android apps. im not sure what you mean by clicking on the top right. Google workspace is web based. There's no way to access the second accounts play store/androids. if I'm need of account # 2 or whatever android apps, i need to sign out of all accounts and sign back into the second account.

    PITA but not really

In the top right of the Play Store is your account picture or graphic, clicking on that allows you to switch between accounts. I have never had issues with this until my Workspace account stopped working.

BUT...what I am really curious about and would love your feedback

    • Can you download an App from the Play Store under your standard Google account and then log into your app using a Workspace account?

😕 Using an app from another account?

    No....

If you're using a chromebook with a enterprise account, assuming that chromebook achieved End of Life or using a chromebook with LTS, you should have play store access ergo be able access that app.

So let's try this... Is the chromebook in question managed? Do you have access to its managerial console. Does the possiblity exist that access to play store and its apps has been disabled?

I don't think what you want can be done.

  • Who is the owner of workspace? Contact that person.

I am the owner of the workspace account. I am a single user, not a big company. This is, to my mind, a glaring issue with Workspace, I am paying for it and can not "opt out" of so many restrictions, much more challenging than free Google accounts. I understand the need for business but not solo accounts.

no exploitation. android on chromebook has long been a complicated process and our google overlords are likely reluctant to decontain it and allow people to access it thru workspace, which I believe is what the OP wants.

    perhaps in the future.

Just to clarify, and in response to your comment, I have a Google Workspace account, and as a non-enterprise customer, I am constantly frustrated with the encumbrances Google imposes on us for an account we pay for. I am not doing anything crooked or shady. I have multiple Google accounts that I use for specific and distinct purposes and also a Workspace account. All I want to do is to be able to login under one of my Google accounts into the Chromebook, which by the way Google suggested for security. Then add my Workspace account and be able to use and access Android apps. This worked fine until the latest update to Chrome OS and I am feeling increasingly Gaslighted by Google support.

Thanks for this reply, I have not had an opportunity to test it. I will be doing so as soon as I have a moment
