Hello, I will be arriving in China on an X1 student visa and I will be staying in a hotel for a week before renting an apartment. I was told I need to register with police within 24h but I also saw somewhere that this doesn't apply if you are staying in a hotel. How does it actually work? And do I still need to do it after I find a place and my visa is converted to a residence permit?

  • The hotel will register you which will cover your stay there.

    When you get your apartment you will need to register yourself within 24 hours of moving in. Depending on which city/province you will be living in you might be able to do it online.

    You will need to check with the local police if where you’re renting. My city had online registration but if you waste time doing it they just call you within 24 hours and tell you to come in and do it manually.

    Chengdu does have online registration, however I've always been rejected random reasons. My local police station know me well :)

    I will move to Chengdu in February for a couple of months as well, also staying in a hotel first and then moving to my own apartment - not sure about the process but if you wanna connect with someone and grab a beer some time let me know. 27M

  • Yes once you get your apartment need to register at the police station. You’ll need that copy to apply for your residence permit. Your school or whoever is helping you convert your student visa to residence permit should informing you what to do next.
