I’ve got an offer to work in Shandong, Kids R Kids, 22k RMB before tax, apartment included, Chinese national holidays off only, and not too sure on it.

I’ve read some horror stories on this sub about Kids R Kids, and I’m not even sure if this is a good starting salary. For context, I’m TEFL qualified but only have 3 months experience teaching in Japan a few years ago. The apartment included is tempting, but the lack of real holidays off is putting me off as I’d want to visit family in summer.

Any advice?

  • The name on its own would alarm me, but the bad reviews and lack of holidays would have me running in the opposite direction.

Yeah you’re right. I wasn’t too sure if lack of holiday was the norm, but other roles my recruiter sent me has included a few weeks off in summer/winter, so I wanted to gauge what everyone else thought

  • this is one of those shitty jobs that you should only do if you have no other choice.

Thanks for your advice. I do have a choice so I won’t !

  • I've never heard of it actually.

I think if you're looking for summer holidays off, then a training centre is likely going to have July/August/January/February blacked out for holidays anyway, given that that is peak holiday season where they have increased work hours for teachers.

At a minimum, you should be getting public holidays + annual leave. Locals get 5 days at least.

When I was in Japan, Japanese training centres had quite a bad rep. What’s the situation on Chinese ones if you don’t mind? :)

Sure. From what I’ve heard compared to Japanese ones, it’s a bit better. The reality for Chinese training centres is that you will have to jump around and smile and do all of that. Hours are usually 2 days off during the week and the. Weekday 6-9pm classes and weekends usually 9am to 6 or 7pm.

What you want to know is what the requirements are - so you have to write lesson plans? Although I haven’t worked in this industry for years so I assume AI should make this a lot easier these days. It’s definitely a 40 hour job per week, not a lot of slacking.

If you can walk the walk and talk the talk and teach well, it’s achievable.

In my job now I also don’t work weekend and I love that. Saturday and sundays I do half days, whereas Tues Wednesday I have off. Weekends are so busy here and mid week is just so much quieter. I’d hate to only have weekends off!

Thank you, that’s helpful to know! I really appreciate it
