Wait… why does the trophy say ‘Weissenhaus Freestyle chess G.O.A.T. Challenge’?

    prolly just a recycled prop

im glad this guy has this lovely family after what happened earlier in his life.

It wasn't even much earlier in his life, it only happened about 5 years ago. Glad to see him doing well.

    parent root
    -49 points ClickElectronic

His daughter looks like she's 3 or 4 though? Seems like he got over it pretty quickly...

    parent root
    59 points Sulshin

what was he supposed to do? give up on life and never move forward again?

    parent root
    1 points induced-subgraph

remarrying (someone much younger than you) and starting a family with them a year after your wife dies is pretty off-putting, and it seems intellectually dishonest to suggest the only alternative is to "give up on life and never move forward again"

    parent root
    6 points MakaelawasChillin

No it’s not. Everyone handles grief differently and we have no idea what went on in any of their personal lives.

    parent root
    1 points RaiseFold100

    What an obnoxious take.

    parent root
    23 points Full-Future1189

    What has happened to him?

    parent root
    115 points SolitoConGafas

Wife died after a car accident

    parent root
    93 points Darshik

She was my chess coach when I was about 12 and she was about 18. Treated little tween me like a real person in a way it felt that few others did.

    parent root
    23 points allozzieadventures

It always happens to the good ones :(

    parent root

    wait he won a child?

    parent
    379 points Mattos_12

Chess has always had a problem recruiting young players, so it’s become a bit of a tradition to gift a child to top GMs. If you look up the ‘Shoe House lettters’ you’ll find a documentary or two about it. Controversial, but they’re often taken from the households of checkers players and it’s hard to argue that they don’t get a better life.

    parent root
    77 points IAmFitzRoy

Note: The wife on the photo was his prize when he won the title in 2024.

    parent root
    10 points ExpletiveDeIeted

    Wow. Excellent prize.

    parent root
    5 points Far_Patience2073

    Bro won a queen

    parent root
    13 points Raskalnekov

I could 100% believe that Chucky was taken from the house of checkers players, considering he was playing it when they announced he won the rapid championship.

    parent root
    23 points imposter_in_da_house

    chat is this real?

    Is this real chat?

    parent root
    1 points Numerot

I'll just say, I don't think Aronian won a child from the Grand Slam, you guys. That's all I'm gonna say, chat, obviously he didn't win a child. Like c'mon, guys, obviously he didn't win a child from a chess tournament. C'mon, chat.

    parent root
    3 points Los1111

Someone has never been to a Freestyle Chess Tournament, and it shows.

    parent root
    2 points carrotwax

And it's a girl, maybe she'll be the next generation's Polgar.

    parent root
    1 points Tiberiux

So this is how the Polgars got so many GMs

    parent root
    4 points TheRiteGuy

You win the losers family. So he got the wife and the kid.

    parent root
    3 points hsiale

What did he win in Vegas, Hans' parents?

    parent root

  • 59 points yubacore

Levon is my king. I would go to war for him.

    parent
    7 points FusRoGah

Genuinely one of my role models to this day. It was sad he couldn’t make the Candidates, but this is a nice consolation. I hope Levon realizes how well-loved he is by the wider community. Elton John even wrote a song about him (just don’t tell Hikaru or he’ll get jealous)

    parent root
    3 points ColonelFaz

Elton had some foresight there, he wrote Levon 11 years before Aronian was even born.

    parent root
    2 points Cheap_Bet

And he is, indeed, a good man.

Lol his daughter totally looks like him that's so funny.

Edit: I don't know why the downvotes. I have a daughter. She looks identical to his mother; even in pictures of them at the same age it's hard to understand the differences, no one sane of mind will ever think she looks like me. I find it funny he has a nice smiling daughter who looks like dad, what's wrong with that?

    parent
    30 points qruxxurq

Mine looks exactly like me. What was the point of marrying a beautiful woman only for my daughter to get my ugly mug?? LOL

    parent root
    4 points g_spaitz

lol it's just for my shattered ego I would have wished somebody once said "she's just like his father" but nooooo way.

    parent root
    3 points qruxxurq

Yeah. Well, I’m just glad she looks like me and not the postman or pool boy. LOL

I think there’s some theory out there that says kids looking more dad when they’re young is selective. Which, callously, makes some sense.

    parent root
    9 points TheCatSleeeps

Like that one meme, 9 months in my womb making me suffer then having the gall to look like their stupid dad lol.

    parent root

Was watching live and the camera panned and stayed on her a few times during the game. Had no idea why, besides the fact she's absolutely stunning. Makes sense to find out she's Levon's wife. Double win for him today.

So great that he could win the match (1.5-0.5). What a pity he never qualified as challenger for the classical world title when Carlsen wore the crown! It would have been interesting.

    parent
  • -10 points JaSper-percabeth

How big is the age gap between Levon and his current wife?

    parent
    16 points Lionel-Chessi

They started dating when she was 21 and he was 37/38 so a ~16 year age gap.

    parent root

    Gen Z ass question

    parent root
    -2 points Unfair-Claim-2327

    What's wrong with it?

    parent root
    25 points the_excellent_goat

Who the fuck cares how large of an age gap there is between two consenting adults? The only reason this question is ever asked is because Gen Z wants to imply (or outright accuse) the older person of taking advantage of the younger person.

These people have no idea how the world works.

I mean he is the oldest active super GM, his prime was 10 years ago. But he's still a monster when he wants to be, he holds the fourth highest elo rating ever.

Yeah but he never comes last or anything either he's always there around the top.

It's still weird levon was in his 40s and his wife was 20 when they met.

    parent
    2 points Santi76

No, it's not. It's like a 15 year age gap. Extremely common, and completely normal when it comes to marriages around the world.
