He will meet Buettner and Carlsen at Qatar

  • Why is everyone surprised?

    Timeline of events:

    • FIDE: "You can't call it World Championship and we want more money."
    • Freestyle: "No deal. Fuck off."
    • FIDE: "We'll defend this in court."
    • [UNDISCLOSED EVENTS HAPPEN HERE]
    • Freestyle: "OK, deal."
    • FIDE: "Welcome to the family."
  • chess mafias finally gonna cooperate

Muawhahaha! My plan is now complete! strokes kitty on lap

I wonder if this kind of open collaboration was promised to Magnus in exchange for his playing world rapid and blitz again

  • That was not at all in anyone’s bingo card. FIDE can’t live without Magnus.

The only reason Kasparov ultimately failed with the PCA was lack of funding. Magnus would likely not encounter that barrier if he really wanted to push for something similar, so long as there were enough super GMs with which to compete.

FIDE doesn't need Magnus, but he could definitely take away from their market control.

The only reason Kasparov ultimately failed with the PCA was lack of funding. Magnus would likely not encounter that barrier

At the beginning, probably. But later on it's hard to say. His track record of getting involved in some business is not really stellar. PlayMagnus/Chess24 ran out of funds and had to seek an emergency merger, Freestyle Chess had issues already in its first year, TakeTakeTake is still up but didn't really become the main app to follow chess.

I actually thought FIDE would simply wait him out, Magnus is quite old now, probably 5 more years his reign is gonna last, I thought FIDE’s strategy after all the things Emil tweeted was waiting him out

I'm absolutely sure that Emil tweeting idiotic stuff is more personal than what FIDE/Arkady would like.

FIDE’s strategy after all the things Emil tweeted

Emil's twitter account is a loose cannon, not some strategy. I guess most people at FIDE would like him to shut up.

  • Who is Hikaru going to support now?

Chat he literally doesn’t care chat

Oh come on now. That's not a good Hikaru roast. Not enough repetition chat. Not enough repetition chat. Chat, it's not enough repetition. Definitely not enough repetition. And not enough manufactured outrage for content. For that matter, not enough mention of content. Definitely gotta do it for the content chat.

/s I laughed good Hikaru roast

Ngl it was funny until the last sentence, you ruined it :(

    Sorry chat. Chat Im sorry

  • I genuinely don't understand why people are acting surprised in this post.

That was ALWAYS FIDE'S stance. They wanted to work with freestyle because they didn't want to do 960 tournaments anymore, but didn't want it to be called a world championship unless they were paid a certain amount of money. Nothing Dvorkovich said here contradicts that

If anything this is the perfect time for FIDE to come back to the negotiating table, after Freestyle bombed so horribly in their first year (in comparison with how much money they threw at it and the gigantic "tour" they had planned failing.)

Yeah this might come to the boom-bust and then plateau that is best for all, both for Fide and for FR Chess to grow.

  • The real freestyle chess was the friends we made along the way

  • Can Anand take over already 😭

can't look at these putin affiliated guys anymore

Ngl I don't think much will change, and I say this as an Indian(Anand has been a living legend for all my life). I think he is quite satisfied with the massive positive impact he brings to the chess world through WACA and the many sponsorships for the players, which will carry on as his legacy. Also, he has probably seen how much of a mess FIDE is at the top of the organization(FIDE still does good work at the grassroots level, thanks to the passionate volunteers), so it will completely depend on his willingness to turn things completely around, from a long term vision-for-the-future POV; and that's...that's a lot of effort, which I'm not sure he will be willing to put in.

Anand is deputy president but I suspect that's just an unofficially honorary title. His role I think is limited to meeting people and bringing in sponsors. He never seems to be involved in any of the disputes or major decisions. The players complaining don't seem to refer him nor do the two heads of FIDE when it comes to these matters.

    Can Anand take over already

Anand seems like he gives absolutely no fuck about taking over. He's been the FIDE deputy president for over three years now and I don't think I've heard about him doing anything outside ceremonial duties.

can't look at these putin affiliated guys

Not sure if you mean anyone other than Dvorkovich himself, while a lot of bad things can be said about Sutovsky, there's no real connection between him and the Russian regime, he was born in Azerbaijan, switched federation to Israel as a 14 yo untitled boy, and was even once publicly called a Russophobe by Karjakin.

And even the case of Dvorkovich is very interesting, moving from Deputy Prime Minister of Russia to President of FIDE, even accounting for how important chess is in Russian tradition and culture, sounds like a very bad career progression, I wouldn't be surprised if for whatever reason Dvorkovich was forced to leave top level Russian politics in 2018, and while he obviously still has connections there, he's nowhere near as important as 10 years ago, and doesn't necessarily go with the party line all the time.

I see Anand is the Deputy President. Is there a thought that he is interested in running for President next year (or 2027, I can't find an exact election date)?

  • Just when it's going bankrupt anyhow.

  • At the end of the day, Magnus always gets what he wants

That’s what happens when you’re the best chess player the world has ever seen

    Best biological chess player

  • Wow emil is crying somewhere for sure, dvorko needs more money flow to sustain his position so he neds magnus

  • FIDE recognizes the player just defeated by Levon Aronian as better than Levon Aronian.

Yes it’s not about one tournament/match. Magnus won the tour

What's the point of mentioning Carlsen though, why is it relevant? Does it make freestyle more legitimate?

He’s officially recognizing a player as number 1. That’s part of FIDE recognizing freestyle as a legitimate form of chess that they want to get behind.

  • FIDE gets Magnus back on semi-friendly terms, Buettner gets bailed out, top players will get large prize pools (probably a bit less generous) without requiring much prep. Win-win-win.

FIDE reforms are even farther from reach.

Not only that but official FIDE ratings for Chess 960 would be huge as well.

  • I think buettner agreed to pay

  • “Potential to be a success story”

Didn’t they cancel one tournament & just straight skipped to the South African one? Lol

I think FIDE complaining about the entire tour at the start and filling a court case would have certainly affected the investment significantly. Now with FIDE and the Freestyle Chess group collaborating (most likely), they will definitely be able to attract more sponsors.

  • Isn’t that just a dig as he is using specific verbiage that isn’t “world champion”?

  • But Levon won

One event. Magnus dominated the Tour.

    Up by 40 points.

Two of the most recent events back to back, dominating Magnus today.

If you think an arbitrary point system is more important than winning the two most recent events, one of which was the grand finale.

And consider that Levon was not invited to every event the way magnus was.

he has been invited but was not performing good and even if he won one more event then also he is mathematically out thats how good magnus performed ( also just because this last leg gave double point that why Levon is 2nd otherwise Levon, Vincent , fabi have similar performance )

  • This is confusing since Levon beat Magnus today in the Freestyle Grand Slam Final.

  • So finally their ego is dropping so they wanna collab

  • This guy has a funny face

  • FIDE can't let go of their Magnus obsession.

  • The number one based on what? Like only 1% of GMs plays 960 regularly, there's no way they can establish a proper elo system for 960.

Yeah, ok? Then the ones who don't play wont have a Freestyle Elo rating.

Nobody has a rating right now, how do you establish a rating for the players who played these events? You can't give elo rating for 10 players, it makes zero sense.

You can, nobody is stopping you, but I would start close to their classical rating, but make it provisional so the first games bump you up and down more.

Idk for all I care they can start at 1500, all that matters is difference between ratings anyway.

It has to start somewhere. In addition, it would increase the incentive for more GMs to play when raiting is involved.

  • Is this real?
It has to be fake right?

  • I don't understand why FIDE is bending over backwards for Magnus. Yes he's the world's best player and yes he's the most popular and famous chess player today. But its clear he doesn't like FIDE, and undermines them whenever the opportunity presents itself.

FIDE should refocus its efforts on Central Asia and India where its chess is actually a big thing and a respected sport. Magnus isn't gonna be #1 forever, and when that time comes we should have another way to keep chess relevant.

  • this was unexpected, wow 🤣

  • I guess now there is no chance of FIDE doing anything about classical ratings decay for semi-retired players because they have to keep Magnus happy. Didn't Sutovsky say in some interview few months back that FIDE was working on it?

  • Emil is one of few sane voices left in the chess world. We need honest people like him to speak out against all the goofballs with their ridiculous demands and primadonna attitudes.

  • Levon has just won two of these events where he directly defeated Magnus (USA, in tiebreaks, and South Africa, in the finals). Why is Magnus then recognized as the best in the world? Why is there a need to recognize anyone as the best in the world? Wesley beat Magnus 13.5 - 2.5 in Reykjavik 2019, Hikaru won the 960 WC a few years later ahead of Magnus... Keymer and Levon both beat him recently in matches.

Because he won the overall freestyle grand slam.  1. Carlsen, Magnus - 121 points 2. Aronian, Levon - 84 points 3. Caruana, Fabiano - 73 points.

You had to carefully select some occurrences where Magnus was defeated. Now compile a list of the times Magnus was the victor and I'm sure it will be a far easier task and a substantially longer list.

"Carefully select"? It was today. He never won the actual, FIDE recognized Fischer Random WC. What's clearer than that? I'm not saying he's definitely not the best, I'm just saying it's too close to call and ill-timed given his recent losses and never being WC.

He literally went 9/9 this year in one of the Grand Slams

It looks too close to call when you look at certain singular results. When you look at overall performance in 960 (or indeed in any time control) there is pretty much no comparison. The same people you mention getting the better of him have not performed nearly as well as him consistently. This is actually pretty obvious to anyone not cherrypicking.

Edit: and to your point about not winning the FIDE Fischer Random WC, which is done entirely in rapid and didn't even have the backing to actually happen in the last few years, you are making this comment in a post where the FIDE president himself is recognizing him as the top 960 player, based on the results of this freestyle tour.

    Bro was born yesterday. :(

    1. Magnus won whole season

    2. if Magnus is in field => +80% people watch

Magnus is 37 points ahead of Levon

How many hours did you spend to find all the times magnus didnt win? :D

Just been following chess ;) Chess players have good memory.

Do you understand the concept of points used in "tours" and "leagues" in various sports? It's not very complicated.
