Hronek Our New Captain?

  • If this is a soft launch for Captain Hronek man that would be so funny to name the guy who hates the media with a white hot passion as captain

Lmao straight up the only time I can remember him talking to the media was when he snapped at JPat

Fun fact: When Hronek is announced captain he'll be the 4th straight Canucks Captain with their nameplate starting with H and being 6 characters.

Before my brain started to function correctly I was like... Hluongo?

    Don’t remind me

That was my thought. Naming Myers captain is pretty viable, he's a leader and can toss softballs at the media with ease. He'll retire as you're prepared to relaunch the new team and name a new captain. I don't see Hronek wanting to talk to the media after the 8th loss in a row. He can still obviously be a leader on the room.

No more interim captains. Give me someone who's either contractually here long term or is poised to guide the next core into their window.

    Give me Hronek.

Myers will be moved at the deadline next year. He should not be captain.

To be fair I think it would be really funny if after every game we get a not so passive aggressive conversation between Hronek and the media.

"You've just lost your 5th game in a row, can you walk us through how you're feeling right now?"

    "No."

    "Uh, care to elaborate?"

    "No."

To be fair which player does like talking to the media. Not like Hughes was extraordinarily charismatic.

Though it’s also true that Hronek dodges the media like the plague.

Yeah but the difference is that Hronek literally avoids doing as much media as he contractually can lol

And that's part of why Hughes wasn't a good captain. Part of that job is having to stand in front of the media, good day or bad, win or loss, and represent the team.

Horvat understood that. So did the Sedins, and Naslund, and Linden...

100%. dude is not a leader of men. He’s a leader of no one! Well maybe his brothers. Led them to drive the getaway car so he didn’t have to face his team 🫢🤷‍♀️

    DeBrusk seems into it.

Every Canuck hates the media lol. Bieksa told us there’s reporters here whose sole purpose is to drive players out of town

Rachel Doerrie told us some just act as mouthpieces for the org (ahem, Patrick Johnston).

Some can hide it, some don’t. Brock is probably the friendliest with the media, and I don’t think it’s a surprise his praises are always sung and constantly given excuses.

kind of weird to make the video about his leadership if they dont plan on making him captain.

This management is horrible at communicating what’s actually on their minds, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they meant to just show case his leadership for the new guys on the blue line, rather than as captain. God I wish we could get some media training for Allvin and Rutherford, especially Rutherford

Can't teach an old dawg new tricks

they are just keeping fans engaged with the team with happy words during this shit show on the ice.

    They deserve it ngl

Funny in theory but I hope they don’t do it. I’m a big fan of Hronek and I don’t doubt his leadership qualities, but the Captain should be someone who is comfortable and dealing with the media and I would worry it would affect him negatively. And by media, we are talking Vancouver media here.

  • Would he actually do it? He does not like talking to the media at all which is a major requirement of being the Captain. That said, do we actually need a Captain right now? I would rather it take a year or two to see who the next one becomes.

This team has desperately needed an identity. Stan Smyl said it a couple years back. A letter on the jersey does not do that.

  • This team does not need to name a captain, man. Run with the A's until one of the young guys emerges.

Rutherford and Allvin are just trying to distract the market from talking about their sheer incompetence.

Naming new captain night is a way to sell tickets. Maybe we can retire some past players not yet considered as well as adding another row to the ring of honour to squeeze Loui Eriksson in there.

He is relatively young. 28 year old seems reasonable. What 22 year old is ready to really be a captain.

We need a captain that’ll be a good influence and will actually stick around. Hroneks locked up and has turned into a really solid top pair 2 way d-man. I’m not opposed to it.

If he can learn to aim we’ll be unstoppable! Jk, I love the dude

Guy has an insane slapper. Misses the net by a mile and bounces around like a cartoon bullet though.

    Yosemite Fil!

We don’t know yet, that’s the point. There’s no need to go naming a captain while we’re still trying to figure out what the next core of the team is.

  • i love hronek but this market will tear him to shreds if he's the captain and gives half assed answers after every game

NO he will tear this market (media) to shreds, lol XD

I don’t think Fil gives a single fuck what the market/media says, and that might be what’s needed to survive here.

that's might be true, but even so a captain should still be held accountable to the fan base through ups and downs and i don't see that with him

That’s fair. I’d be fine with them going no captain for a bit and see if anyone emerges. Theres 0 rush

It seemed they really got under his skin at times. Maybe he's improved but he was definitely not the master of media in the past.

Hes getting better with media idk what ur on about

the fact i can count his media appearances post game since coming to vancouver in one hand says everything. not enough of a track record to say he's been a good enough leader to make him captain.

  • The only thing weirder than naming Hronek captain is naming a captain this season when there’s literally no good reason to do so

  • The PR campaign for Hronek does seem to be firing on all cylinders. Strange. I like him! Maybe an honest, confrontational personality in the media would help rally the team? Haha

  • How can you play better?

Aggressive stare don't you think we would have played better if we knew how?

  • We dont need a captain right now. There is no proper leader in the squad that can be public facing.

Hronek is a leader in the room but its clear he doesnt want to be the public leader, so don't force him to.

  • Name Luongo captain you cowards.

Be patient now, we have wait 3 more years until we can draft Gianni Luongo and make him captain!

Apparently goalies aren’t allowed to be captains! Stupid Durnan rule

  • Even as an unofficial captain so happy to have this guy on the team after the Hughes trade

  • If there's no plan to trade him then I'd be okay with him being Captain.

I think the team should run captainless for a while though. Just have the As until the new identity of the team is determined.

  • Naming Hronek the captain would be a terrible idea, not because I have any doubts about him as a player, but because it reeks of a desperate organization looking for any sort of PR win.

He's the least media-prepared core Canuck I've seen in a long time. You really want the guy who answers media softballs with three words to be the public face of the team?

  • Hronek the type of leader that stares into your soul to motivate you.

  • his most notable media moment being when he had that .. interaction with JPat makes me feel like he's not the best fit for the C in this particular market. give him an A for sure and i don't doubt he is a great leader in the room, but idk it's just weird to make one of the most media averse individuals on the team the captain

That makes me like him more haha

That kind of personality should help shield some of the younger guys.

Hronek would make a great captain. At the very least he will tell it as it is. Fans here probably appreciate that over the media trained, soul less answers from the last couple of captains.

  • The captain needs to speak every day, Hronek speaks once a year and he hates it. This is a ridiculous decision if it’s actually what they’re going with, unless he’s had a change of heart and decided he wants to do media 100 times a year.

  • I bet you this mgmt doesn't even know that Hronek doesn't like dealing with the media.

They are completely out of touch with the room and their players. Watch, they'll be trading Hronek in two years.

  • well shit... I guess we're not trading him.

  • Hronek is great, one of my favourites and I think he's the one vet they can keep. I dont think they have to give him the captaincy for him to lead. Just let him do his thing.

  • Dude should be one of our top trade chips. Why are we naming another introvert captain?

Because we're in a hybrid retool and aren't planning to accumulate draft capital.

  • Very subtle, as is par for the course for this organization. But I've felt this to be the obvious decision since before we made the trade, so I'm fine with it. The only problem is that I'd like to trade him, because a 1RD on his contract, in this market, would return a massive haul.

Problem is, 1RD are always in massive demand. You can't expect to draft away all the holes in your lineup.

Wingers, LD and defensive forwards are relatively easy to find.

Plus Filip's affordable and has clearly settled in being a Canuck.

He's going to be in his mid-30s by the time we're good again (if we're ever actually good again; this is assuming we deliberately rebuild and don't, "retool in a little bit of a hybrid form", for yet another decade). He's probably not going to be a 1RD anymore when he's ~33+, ergo, it's going to be a hole we'll need to draft for anyways.

  • Hronek seems the angry type. We need that.
