While I haven't been afraid to throw criticism Pettersson's way, there's more to this. After the Quinn Hughes trade, I think the team got a bump from the whole thing being over. Now we're seeing the team come back to reality. This team wasn't very good when Quinn Hughes was here, and now you take him out of the lineup, and you're beginning to see how this team is even worse without him. Plus, Demko and Lankinen aren't bailing this team out anymore. For years, Demko has made this team look a lot better than what they are, and he's covered up a lot of flaws. Lankinen did that for parts of last season as well. The simple answer is that this team isn't very good, and now you take Hughes out of the lineup, and you really see how bad this team is.
The entire team's not bad. The bad part is we can't score. I think our defense isn't really that bad. Yeah we're young and inexperienced which is definitely not good but overall I would blame most of our issues on scoring
Sure, they can't score, but they are 31st in goals against. The defense has been horrid for most of the season. Do I think the blue line has potential? Yes, I do. But you can't deny the fact that this team has been a train wreck defensively, and that was supposed to be a strength of the team.

1st period - that backhand pass to Boeser (who missed the pass) was signs he has his confidence up. That play is clear that he doesn't have good linemates to keep up with his feeds. Boeser is a step behind. Prime-Boeser would have took that pass and scored right in front. This play made me realize there might still be something left in EP40.
Then...
2nd period - He fans on the shot and Raymond picks his pocket to score the other way. But the bad habits creeped in again. EP40 did that sky high sigh once he fanned the shot. That took a precious milli-second away. The same thing he did in Nashville post-season when he one-timed and missed the open net. Dude, just keep skating! Don't overthink it.
It's clear the skill is still there, but it's all a mental battle. This is all in-game mentality and he gets down on himself really fast. When he's scoring and feeling it, he will deke and break ankles, but the moment he misses a shot, he goes into a spiral.
I am aware of his off-ice difficulties with his wife's miscarriage. And it is obviously terrible news. I really hope they can recover and if he really needs time off, then Canucks should give him that leave of absence.
But if he chooses to play, then he really needs to be more aware his on-ice game and be focused.
I know everyone on here is on team tank and they want to lose. But believe it or not, the rest of the team does not share your wish.
100% take Verhoeff. Defence is the hardest position to build as they take the longest to develop. If even 1 of Buium, Willander, or Dpetey don't develop as expected, your blueline looks significantly weaker.
You can always draft or trade for forwards later on as they peak a little earlier and would allow us to time it better with the defence coming into form.
Always pick BPA and we can make trades later on. You gladly take a top RHD prospect with top pairing upside. Imagine him and Willander on the right for the next 10 years or alternatively the value he'd return in a trade. We literally just need anything at this stage.
I know… We will most likely get outjerked by the 30th place team or go on an end of season streak and end up with another mediocre pick :) and start the cycle over.
I pray that the next few years actually lead to consistent playoff appearances down the road with at least 1 Finals appearance. I've been team tank for years, but this is rough.

Now the team is in complete shambles, forced to trade their all time best defenseman. Have signed unproductive players to long term no trade contracts.

I don't care if Rutherford is 100 years old and doesn't want to go through a rebuild. If this ownership can't realize that you need to burn it to the ground. Ya it’s crazy…. The d was so hyped after last season and with a healthy goalie tandem, it looked like they’d give very little up… fast forward to the start of season and the defence has been really bad…. Even when Hughes was here… gotta at least figure part of it has to be the system they’re doing…

Basically, a few players were asked to waive their NTC and it was pretty well known it was the Hughes brothers trying to advocate management to get their brother. I am guessing when you have a family with kids in school, having another teammate try to force your trade upsets people.
