I heard that if you remove the seat headrest, the 'legs' of the headrest are usually pointed and are ideal for breaking the window in an emergency. Anyone know if that's true?
The trick is to jam one leg down where the window meets the door and then lever the headrest towards you. Ive heard it works better by jamming the leg further forwards in the window towards the A pillar
You need a headrest with sturdy rods though, which is luck of the draw. And many cars either have 1. Integrated headrests, 2. Non removable ones or 3. Not enough clearance to remove the headrest without reclining the seat or lowering it which you won't have time for in an emergency.
So yeah a smasher tool is best
Instead of finding the video I saw before of a woman managing to smash a window with her headrest, I found this tinnitus enjoyer who showed it isn't reliable even with my trick... welp.
Headphones warning: guy obviously works on a building site.
I tried to remove a headrest from my car - I couldn't, as there simply wasn't the clearance between the headrest and the roof. The only way would be to recline the seat a fair bit, and then remove it. Not sure I fancy that option in a life-or-death scenario... 😊
No. Absolutely not you should always try and evacuate as soon as possible. Especially if you don’t know the depth.
You wait for it to fill up to equalise the pressure and allow you to open the door. But it’s a massive risk because:
1) the pressure outside and inside a sinking car takes a Long time to equalise and if the water is deep, you Might not be able to open the door until the car has stopped sinking
2) modern cars sometimes can be affected by the water and in some cases cause the central locking to activate and not disengage. Meaning you can’t open the door ever.
(Did some training on this as I work in flooding. It’s one of my nightmares too.
This was proven to be false by Mythbusters: the pressure may equalise but only after sometime pushing the door open is almost impossible. They found the best way was to open everything - doors, windows - as soon as possible preferably before the car hits the water and remove the seatbelt. Even then it was touch and go for trained diver.
If that's the case, They probably had to wait until the car was submerged before they could escape. You can't normally open the door until the water pressure equalizes in the cabin. Scary as fuck.
This is not true, the best thing to do is just open the door before ASAP. Mythbusters did this. The time it takes pressure to equalise is much longer than most people can hold their breath for.
I have had literal nightmares about this. My dad was a perpetually impaired driver and for months after his license was revoked, I would have dreams about being a car he was driving and going off a cliff, the top level of parking garage, mountains, etc.
One of the best tools to use for breaking a window is an automatic centre punch - the spring loaded hammer action ones. All you do is press it into a corner of the window, once the 2 inner springs release, that very sharp point is getting hammered into the window, shattering it.
Sticky pedal? Kudos to the female that helped. 👍🏼💪
She didn’t do anything lol went down and up
She did more than the men
On a serious note - always keep a tool in your car for breaking the window in case of emergencies.
Yep, we put one of these in each car —>

Car goes down seriously quick!

Doesn’t work on some cars where the headrest is not removable. (Volvo comes to mind).
I use a « ResQme », I have one on each of my keychains.
Me too.
No it's not. I've seen videos of big guys hammering away at the window with a headrest leg and getting nowhere...

No the best thing is to either try get the windows down immediately or else use off those small break glass tools
A pneumonic hammer will break the glass with almost 0 force required there's basically no good reason not to have one
Some cars have that feature. But if you are in a panic, just how well do you think you're going to get the latch to release the headrest?
Aren't you supposed to wait until it fills up and is, presumably, seconds from dragging you to Poseidon's Hellish Depths?

Only if your car has tempered glass. Those devices wont work on a substantial number of new cars.

Perfect dive form, though. Hardly a splash. Judges are going to score it well

Is that a Citroën Sea Sick... I mean C6?
Looks like he proved you wrong, you can park, but you get carried away..
Lucky there's a ladder right there.
Is this Scotland?
I always keep a window breaking tool in my glove box. You just never know if you'll ever need it.
Should be a sign saying 'Boat parking only'.
How embarrassing all those adult men watching the lady to down that ladder.....
Stunt jump failed
