We have 22 nights in Newfoundland this summer (August). It’s not our first time going there for an extended time, but it’s the first time for our two kids (11 and 16). We will have our own vehicle and will be mostly tent camping. I have created a rough itinerary, and I’m wondering if we should do more or less time in any of them or if we are missing something? Last time we kind of winged it, but I don’t feel comfortable doing that with the kids so I plan to book everything in advance.

Ferry arrives 0715 (already booked)

Blow me down PP - 2 nights

Northern peninsula (cabin rental) - 3 nights

Gros Morne NP - 5 nights

I have two more nights to either distribute here or add something else. It’s all camping except the northern peninsula. If anyone has a suggestion for a good dog-friendly spot up there, let me know (prefer to have a kitchen).

  • Try Snorri Cabins up near L'Anse aux Meadows. We stayed at ocean cabin 2 bedroom washer dryer full kitchen beautiful renovation inside and right on the ocean

We stayed here 8 years ago and it was great. Glad to hear they’re still open.

  • Any desire to take the ferry to St Pierre to visit France?

All our passports have been expired for a while as I have no desire to leave Canada at the moment…

Fair enough. I like geographical oddities so the fact that France is only a two hour ferry from Newfoundland would be hard for me to resist!

I agree that it is super cool! We will save it for another trip :)

We went to St Pierre when we toured around Newfoundland and it was actually quite disappointing.

I’ve been to France and always found the French more hospitable than people give them credit for, but in St Pierre many people we interacted with were upset that tourists existed it seemed.

I found out later from a French friend that people on the island are essentially paid by the French government to live there since France wants to keep the settlement occupied. They get paid the same if they serve 3 tables a day or 30, so we felt like a burden at all the establishments we went to.

Prices were predictably high, but the business hours were quite strange. The grocery store was open 11am-4pm. Restaurants were open 10am-12pm, then again 5pm-7pm. There also isn’t enough tourist infrastructure to support the crowds they get. Our first night there we missed the grocery store operating window and all the restaurants were full so ended up having snacks we brought with us for dinner.
