Our flight from Toronto YYZ to New York La Guardia was cancelled whilst we were at the gate (Porter Airlines).We were supposed to fly 30th December at 3:15pm.
We got rebooked on a flight for the 5th January…
Porter Airlines staff very unhelpful and told us to ring a customer service number with an 8 hour wait time as the only option to be rebooked with another airline.
The only other flights to New York were Air Canada flights for $900 each. The attendant told us to book alternate transport ourselves and claim it back through Porter however he cannot guarentee that we will get all of that money back.
We decided to book the overnight bus from Union Station instead as the next most reasonable form of transport as it was much cheaper and we couldn’t afford the high cost of the alternate flight.
After being in contact with porter they are refusing our reimbursement for the bus tickets and only offering $400 compensation. However they left us stranded with no choice but to either book ourselves or wait 5 days, as I was over 9 hours late surely I’m entitled to $1000??

Why was the flight canceled? This matters for reimbursement.
It was due to crew shortages, a controllable measure
Complain to the Canadian transportation agency.
And wait. Well over 100K in line ahead. It's outrageous. Had a similar issue with Porter 10 days ago. Fix the law. In Europe, it's immediate payment. As in, rightaway, this includes delays. We absolutely need to shake up the airlines lack of concern for their customers and alleged rights.
