My partner and I are SO excited to rent an RV and ski as many resorts as we can along the Powder Highway in February for 1 month.

My question is for anyone who has done a trip like this before, how far in advance did you have to book your campsites?

We were hoping we wouldn't have to pre-book our entire trip so we could be a bit flexible with it, if we really like a certain resort for example, but I have been looking at some of the reservation sites and they are looking pretty full!

Is it a terrible idea to try to wing it? Do I have to lock in our whole trip now a month in advance? Thank you!

  • The plumbing will freeze in an RV unless you jump through a lot of hoops like constant heating. Where are you going to get all that heat? Or are you dry camping?

Canadream where we are renting the RV from says they have winterised RV’s with heated/insulated pipes so the plumbing is still operational. Still I know it might be unreliable esp in very cold temps so I was planning on using RV park showers or public pools for showers mostly, and public toilets.

  • Are there even drop-in RV campgrounds that are open in winter and have winterized services along your route? We live in BC and have a 4-season RV, but rarely RV in winter because there aren't many places that are open (and the ones that are, are full a year in advance). I know that some ski hills, people pre-book the entire season and leave their RV at the hill. Also, don't count on dumping your tanks at a provincial campground along the way, the vast majority are closed in October.

According to the web there are RV sites open year round at or near basically all of the ski resorts we have on our route. Most have sites still available, I was just wondering if I need to book them now before we go because I was hoping for some flexibility. Some ski hills also appear to have short term RV parking at the base. I have a map from the rental company of winter dump points but hopefully we can avoid using the van toilet as much as possible. Thank you!

  • Have you done much winter driving?

I lived in Canada for a ski season several years ago and did some winter driving then, and I have driven in Japan also. So a little bit, but not a lot

🫢 and you’re planning on trying to maneuver an RV??

Yeah I drive a small truck for a living and my partner has his heavy rigid lisence so I am yeah
