I've done comic book art before, and I have to say, even in the medium of newspaper funnies, this level of visual story telling should not be taken for granted. There is just enough information in every panel to clearly communicate what has transpired, the mood, even what it sounds like. Watterson is a master.
Someone could play piano music over this, like the old black-and-white movies with Chaplin and such, and it would fit beautifully.
And this still happens to me - only it's just me locking the door before leaving, and only then remembering I don't have something that's now on the other side of the locked door.
Yeah, I just love how the total chaos of Calvin’s life intersects with Susie’s calm, orderly life here in just three panels, but it adds so much to the strip.

I always loved that I could just hear that last panel because my mom screamed just like that when things like this happened.
Heh. Yeah, this cartoon basically has a silent movie soundtrack that ends in the scream.
You can see that she’s in the middle of shouting the “U” of a certain four-letter word.
I always thought she was yelling "CAAAAAAALVINNN!!!!!!"
The lack of words is the best part. The illustrations are strong enough without them.

So good, I got pain from the cringe just skimming the comic
Heck, I still have dreams that I'm late for work and have to ask for a ride. 😑

This was me growing up.
It’s still me, but it was me growing up, too.
Hi, Mitch!
I always loved that Watterson could tell an entire story just from facial expressions and body language alone
The panel with Susie telling Calvin’s mom where he went is my favorite. Don’t know why, it just makes me smile.

Both of their faces while his mom is driving crack me up. Calvin's scowl in the back seat is amazing.
I've been on both sides of this now. Luckily, wfh makes these little runs not too bad.
Holy crap, I was born that day! And the strip foretold my ADHD!
You can hear the F***
The best comics have both great motion and emotion. And hey, look at that, Watterson nailed it again.
that middle pane, third row down... the joy and happiness in their faces - fleeting moment of joy for them both.
Yeah that doesn't look fun
What is happening on the last two panels?
Calvin put his books down when looking for his lunch, and never brought them to school.
Thank you!
The lunch is more important than the books are anyways.
This unlocked old anxieties.
If you have an ADHD kid (or have it yourself), this strip really resonates.
This and the dragging kicking and screaming out of bed and being shoved onto a bus are my two favorites when I was a kid. So relatable.
this hurts me physically
Just excellent
haahhaah! I love how they blame each other for missing the bus.
I know that feeling all too well of just missing the bus and watching it drive right past you.
Absolute greatness without saying a word!
And what worse,ITS A SUNDAY!
