Ordered this cake for my niece’s birthday. We even talked to the baker and she confidently said she could do it. My brother-in-law picked it up and… he PAID for it. Still don’t know why. Anyway, here’s the masterpiece.
Holy shit, I work in a bakery and I've seen newbie employees (who have never written on a cake in their lives) write much better than this!! 😳 Is it too late to get your money back?? I definitely would try, this is unacceptable.
Yeah, we went back. No way it should’ve looked like that 😂 My niece thought it was funny at least. We got a refund, but of course the one baker we actually needed wasn’t there.
took a career test, that test suggested cake decorator.
I applied and was hired.
Good for you! I have no doubt you could do a better job than this, with 1 arm tied behind you! For the record - Hello Kitty wasn't even a thought in the designer's head when I was young. Matter of fact - I had already graduated high school when Yuko Shimizu's design rolled out on a coin purse in '75. Too bad she never got royalties!
I try but there are still better cake artists out there. I enjoy cake decorating a lot and at one of my previous jobs I got to be creative which is a plus.
I admit, the Hello Kitty cakes I got as a child never gave Shimizu royalty. 😬
Awe, your comment put a smile on my face. You are a wonderful person!
Ah, I didn’t know that Shimizu didn’t whatsoever. I see so many Hello Kitty products in North America such as Winners and now I wonder if they give her any royalties.
No - she never got royalties of any kind. She developed the concept while employed, so it automatically becomes the property of the employer. It's a standard practice, as they've paid for your time, and you've often used their resources and supplies (take scientific equipment for medical research, as an example - especially in the development of new medicines). Companies often spend 10s of millions of dollars for this, which is why you sign non-compete agreements, which gives the employer the right to patent and market any products you've developed. There have been several court cases where employees were forced to turn over products they'd developed at home, in their "off time," because of the non-compete clause. I know it's happened in Canada and the US, but I'm not sure if other countries have this clause as well. I'm pretty sure they must.
Could she create anything with Hello Kitty if she’s out of the company?
Absolutely not, as it would be a copyright infringement, as the company holds the patent. They could, and most likely would, at least if she tried to display (for other than her personal use - though I'm not positive about how "personal use" would be defined in this case), or especially if she tried to sell it - take her to court and sue her for big bucks.
She must be brand new to writing on cakes, because only newbies use giant piping tips. She should've used a size 1 or 2, but it looks like she used a 4 or a 5 at least. I work at a bakery. I've sent out some ugly cakes before but never this bad lol.
We only asked for the colors + “Happy Birthday Susanna.” We had our own Cinnamoroll topper we wanted to add. Here’s the inspo pic: https://imgur.com/a/QZ0bzcf
Hmm… looks like the pink color of the top was airbrushed. Then they messed up the writing and had to go bigger to cover up the white places where they messed up the airbrushing while trying to fix the writing?? The piping tip for the writing is too big, but so is the one used for the border. Like whyyy is the border so big too? Embarrassing for a “professional”.
Did you get this from a grocery store bakery? I worked at one for 10 years. I saw you mention to someone that the decorator wasn't there. Maybe she was out sick and another employee or manager had to make it?
Immm im NOT a baker...im arguably not even good at doing the basics....I can 100% guarantee even I could do 10x better than this. Is this woman illiterate? 😅🤦🏼♀️
Happy Birthday Sus(ancient Sumerian character?)Nacol!
At this point I’m convinced she unlocked a new alphabet mid word 💀
Man...I magnified the photo as much as I could on my phone, and I still can't decipher what it really says 😕
Susanna I think?
(Ancient sumerian character?) cracked me the fuck up 😹😹
How old is Susagnarg going to be? A teenager might get some kinda laugh out of it, at least 🤞🏼
Susagnarg is turning 7. Honestly the name on the cake aged her like 300 years though
This would be an epic nickname with an unfortunate yet funny story behind it!
Sadly - that I believe. Poor youngster! I hope the rest of her day went better than this! 🤞
Mappy Birthday Subway!
Submarine?

Did Hagrid ice this?
Omg. This would be the perfect way to present it. Arive and say I might have sat on it, but it still should be good. And gift a wand
Oh Susanca don’t you cry for me .
Once, a customer special requested the writing look like a child wrote on it.
I couldn’t so someone else had to write for me.
Would have been an epic project/experience for a "take your child to work day!" 😂
That would be lovely!
Actually, one inspiration for me to be a cake decorator was when I was young I had Hello Kitty cakes outlined in chocolate.
I just wondered if I could do the same. Graduated school, took a career test, that test suggested cake decorator.
I applied and was hired.

Thank you for your kindness and belief in me.

You're being too hard on yourself! Even people with decades of experience have off days. The important thing is that you never give up!
Unfortunately, Shimizu didn't get royalties for anything related to Hello Kitty 😕

Thank you for telling me this in detail. Could she create anything with Hello Kitty if she’s out of the company?
Absolutely not, as it would be a copyright infringement, as the company holds the patent. Susanna?
It looks like she scraped off her first attempt and this is the one she was satisfied with 😱
They have stencils.... this is so incredibly lazy
Mappy Birthat Susxvada? Yikes. Happy birthday to your niece though!

For sure! Everyone starts somewhere. At least it’ll be a birthday cake no one ever forgets lol
It looks like the baker scraped off previous attempts and was actually satisfied with this one 😳
Would love to see the inspiration!

The baker wasn’t even in the same galaxy as the inspo pic. Holy shit!
And it’s not like the inspo cake is complicated! It’s a sheet cake and a few different piping tips.
Right?! And they’re basic tips that come in every set at Walmart.
YIKES. 😳
Yikes! That's scary af! She must be blind in one eye, and can't see out of the other 😱 No disrespect meant to vision impaired individuals
I don't see any difference 🤷🏼♀️
I was kidding...
What did you name that poor child
Susanoo?
Happy birthaay, Susanancig!!!
Id get my money back, that is completely unacceptable!!
The BAKER could do what? Writing letters with icing?
Did the baker smell of alcohol? 😬🫣
Or waccy baccy? 😉
Sorry, I read that as "wackey backey" when I'm sure you mean "wakey bakey."
"Wackey backey" sounds like a morning porn flick. 🤪
It should have read "wacky baccy", which has been a common slang term for pot for at least 5 decades - maybe more, but icr
Again, I've heard it as "wake-y bake-y" phonetically.
If the promise was baking a modern version of the Harry Potter cake, well, she did it 😅

SUSANA IS MY NAME TOO! But I can tell it's spelt Susanna
You mean it's not Susagnaeg?
To my tired eyes it looks like it says, “Happy Birthday Subway” 🤣😂
It just gets worse the longer you look at it.
I laughed so hard at this, but I'm sorry it happened.
Nailed it! 🔨😂
Divorce the baker
Happee birthdae Harry 😆
HarryHairy 😂Did you get this from a grocery store bakery? I worked at one for 10 years. I saw you mention to someone that the decorator wasn't there. Maybe she was out sick and another employee or manager had to make it?

HAPPEE BIRTHDAE HARRY
Susanna ...I could read it okay I think lol
