Went there for the first time in ten years with my buddy. We’re 38 and 40. The place was packed with sixteen to twenty five year olds. Instant identity crisis. "Am I really this old?"
I finally spotted two older guys and felt better for about three seconds... It was just our reflection in the mirror.
The lease of De Valera's was coming to an end, and the landlord wanted them out. The bar, being very successful and a staple of the expat community, proposed to significantly raise the rent, among other things, but to no avail. The landlord didn't want to budge.
The last bar that tried to offer something new in Flagey was the subject of numerous political battles, forcing it to scale back their entire range of activities : L'Epaulé Jeté.
Either it might be a touristy AB Inbev bar.
Or it might indeed be a trendy restaurant or chain (easier to manage for Ixelles and the neighbours).
Yes, boycott everything you don’t like 😂 it’s really stupid that the owner applies the law and wants his own property in the end of the lease. Boycot it now! 😂😂

😂
Take my upvote for the unexpected belly laugh on this cold Sunday!
For people who don't know :

So the bar closed its doors late december.
Landlord hates money? That's new
happen to me to, was kicked out bc they wanted to take the house, didn't want the money, even doubled
Yeah but this is a shop, not a house, so it's weirder. It's not like they're going to live there. I wonder what will open there
Likely a very lucrative deal with one of the major breweries
No matter how much the bar was willing to pay, they were making more, that's very simple math. So the landlord probably thinks (s)he can make more.
Not entirely true. The landlords proposed new terms which made it essentially impossible to operate at a profit.
What sort of terms?
_You must clean the premises once a week!_
Any idea on what it's going to become now? If it's some fancy restaurant I will boycot it.
Looking at the way Flagey is going chances are high, will probably turn into another outpost of some small plates chain restaurant. Sad times.
This or a mini version of Cafe Belga
That's what many people think about : a lucrative deal with one of the major breweries
Or selling the land and building some new condos?
Nothing has filtered :/

Yes, that's sort of how a boycott works.
Propriety owner spotted!
Oh nooooooooo 😀
Oh no!
Why are they closing?
The landlord hates rugby.
So fill to me the parting glass...
Man. This place brings back so many memories. Wishing my glass was overflowing with Guinness and a plate of fish & chips was in front of me right now.
Such a shame. Best bar on Flagey.
Damned by faint praise...
One of the best bars in Brussels, not just Flagey!
Oh, this is sad. Great spot to watch games 🥺
They need to burn that place down in order to clean it. Ever try putting your elbows on the bar? Ewwww.
I don't get it.
I believe this is De Valera's, an Irish pub by Flagey which has closed down as of January 1st.
It is indeed
It’s closing…..
What is ?
We are not all rich people from Southern Brussels. Never went to drink at Flagey. Born and lived here 30 years. 😅
A famous bar ?
Sorry, you are too cool for us
Yep I'm from where people shoot at each other
Louise?
But you said you’re not from southern Brussels?
I lived in s Brussels and i still dont know it haha so yeah I'd like some context too
But im both not rich + introverted and i much prefer having friends for drinks in my own nice garden so who knows lol
It's heartwarming to catch
someone who's not a southern bobo.
😥 sad.
will they open somewhere else possibly?
They opened the Dubliner in the city center a few years ago. Some of the staff moved there as well. But it has no kitchen.
I passed there a few time. I remember a lot of people were watching sports shows there…
Well well well, sounds like a Brusseleir bobo.
