Been a loyal Firefox user for over a decade. Never really cared enough to switch browsers since it's worked alright for me. All I care about is a fast browser that respects my privacy and offers good adblocking. Firefox is pretty good in the privacy and adblocking departments, but it's somewhat lacking in speed and compatbility. First I had the hope that the Servo engine would finally be competitive with Blink in terms of speed, then it got kinda shitcanned and we're still stuck with Gecko for the forseeable future. Spidermonkey is also still way behind V8 and considering so much of the web is JS, that is pretty noticeable.
I recently gave Brave a spin again on my Nobara rig (it's the default browser there) just to see how it compares and man it's tempting not to switch. Brave seems equal if not better than Firefox in the adblock / privacy departments, while being a lot faster and more compatible with websites. According to Speedometer 3.1 Brave is 30% faster than Firefox on my PC and that seems to match my experience. It's also still FOSS like Firefox which is nice. Only thing I don't really like is Brave sync but I can live with it.
One of the reasons why I stayed with Firefox is because I didn't like the idea of Chromium dominance. But it seems like Mozilla is not interested or capable enough in developing a solid alternative. Well at least Chromium is Open Source I guess.
A browser is a tool. You don't need to be devoted to a specific one. Switch to whatever works best for your use case.
Big part of the reason why I supported FF was purely ideological: the idea of less dependence on Google and to go against a Chromium monopoly. But considering Mozilla itself depends on Google for most of its funding, it's not really that much better in that regard. If the Google monopoly is inescapable anyway, I might as well use the better browser..
You can switch to whatever works better for you, but keep an eye on Firefox or use it as a secondary browser. Maybe in 2026, Firefox will have a lot of great improvements!
I understand the ideological reason. I used to be a big Firefox supporter in the early days. đ
Wise words.
Firefox donât know what theyâre doing anymore from the ai crap theyâre adding to the cringe podcasts they put out.. I dumped it.
I fully switched to Vivaldi, not only does it sync with everything perfectly but the amount of features and customisation.
Man, if you want to try a browser try Vivaldi.
This podcast? https://irlpodcast.org/
I donât know, it was on YouTube.. pure cringe: https://youtube.com/@firefox?si=bF3J-jdEAhiwUcxW
lack of uBO on Vivaldi is a dealbreaker for me, unfortunately (it'd also be cool if they open sourced all of Vivaldi's code)
Why? It has its own adblocker and Iâve had 0 issues with it
my understanding is that the Vivaldi adblock is more in line with what uBOL offers and isn't as comprehensive as full uBO. i like having a lot more granular control, which i haven't found outside of full uBO.
Huh⊠my friend says that uBO is preinstalled on his vivaldi but ill ask
as i understand it Vivaldi killed off uBO this past summer (2025) due to the Mv2/3 changes that came through Chromium. uBO Lite still works with Mv3, which i've seen people confuse for the full version (it's even created by the same dev as uBO) but it lacks functionality. for most people uBOL will probably be fine: I use it in Edge on my work computer and it seems to do the trick, but websites like MSN remain ad-cluttered messes.
uBlock Origin (not lite) 1.68.0 in my Vivaldi install. đ Still working!
uBO is still working in Vivaldi. Or do you mean longer term?
Yeah what is the point of Podcasts? Side hustle? Stop wasting money!
Not a clue, most of the comments on the videos are negative, my last comment on it was telling them stop trying to be hip and release videos like ladybird browser does, where it discusses the browsers.. not what is hip⊠theyâre going about it so backwards itâs laughable! I am still subscribed on their yt to see the next cringe they release or if they listened and actually started making videos/ podcasts that were informative and not doomscrolling slop.
Like did buzzfeed acquire Firefox or something?
I switched to Brave after years of using FF, and I have no regrets. I use it on multiple platforms, and everything is synced.
Firefox is the only browser rn for me. I somewhat care about privacy so i put privacy extensions on. It can run ublock origins unlike chromium based ones. I can also use it for drm unlike many other options which is important to me. Brave had issues running some websites i need for work. Speed is fine for me and dont have any bugs rn
Don't you worry man, their next update will have an AI gooner bot that always stays in the sidebar and motivates you to donate to Mozilla Inc.
I use both Firefox and Brave, though these days ff is a secondary browser to me. webpage rendering is noticeably faster in Brave than it is in Firefox (though admittedly still not as fast as Chrome) and the double-layer of Shields + uBO is very nice (my main reason for still using uBO is that the element zapper is still better in uBO than the Shields equivalent, otherwise i'd probably only use Shields)
Why is anyone loyal to a fucking browser.
Makes no sense itâs a tool I use zen but u find my self using random ones from time to time no real reason I just donât really care if Iâm just looking at a document
I tried switching and find myself coming back to it.
Tried brave myself but prefer using Firefox. I also use adguard home on my router and turned off DOH on Firefox so it doesnât bypass my preferred DNS.
I'm in the same boat as you. I have tested literally every browser available and I love Firefox features. But the speed and compatibility is a major issue. So, naturally I thought this is what Mozilla would be working on. But instead, they are just working on design and UI, things that can be changed with CSS anyway.
Also, if you tried the Android version, its nice but again so notoriously bad performance wise. We need improvements in the browsers core, not the UI. Seems Mozilla is only working on promotion from this year.
I still use Firefox mainly, but I do notice there's a performance difference whenever video playback is involved.
I typically just have a second browser available for video playback and Firefox for the rest.
There's no rule that says you can only run one browser anyway. Use whatever right tool for the job.
I'm using Firefox on Android and I hate how buggy the autofill is and the sync really sucks
Firefox on android sucks really bad.
You know it's funny how history repeats itself. The situation the Firefox/Mozilla finds itself in is really the same as Netscape when MS killed their business model by giving away Internet Explorer back in the 90's. The end result: no money. How to compete? Google turned off the cash flow and Mozilla is withering on the vine. Same as before. I have been using a Mozilla product since I first got on the web in 1996. I don't like change? It feels like home. I hope that Mozilla finds a way back to relevance. I would love to see the woke/politics left out. It's divisive which is the last thing a volunteer product wants in it's community. It will take a lot to make me leave for good, but I do use Chromium to run dashboards for a bunch of web app dashboards and it's notably faster for those. I don't notice it as much just browsing the web. .02
Firefox based browsers are great, if you use uBlock Origin to disable all JavaScript and elements larger than 25 kb and treat it like a text-based browser.
FF is the only working well for me under Wayland.. with any chrome based like brave i had troubles with fullscreen like youtube or X videos... need to press f11 to enter video fullscreen... anyone having the same issues?
I'm also on Wayland but I haven't had these issues, in fact entering fullscreen is smoother on chromium browsers for me.
I use nobara/fedora 43 with the brave rpm. Are you using the flatpak version by any chance?
Weird, I've just switched from Brave back to Firefox (well LibreWolf actually). I got fed up with Chrome's memory consumption and Brave's AI sneaking in. There also seems to be some good Firefox based browsers popping up lately like Zen and Mullvad. The clincher is containers though. I have multiple accounts for managing different workloads and being able to use the same browser instance with tabs for each account of the same site is hard to do without once you've got used to it. The grass is always greener!
Firefox nightly has containers iirc or well profiles.
You can do that if you want
was in a similar boat as u at one point. wanting to be a part of the user base of a unique browser compared to vast majority, foss software, customization, and etc. but at one point, the performance aspect just felt over bearing for my preference. then i tried something like brave and vivaldi. was amused how much the performance diff felt. on top of gecko as an engine not going anywhere too much from back then, apparently itâs also the websitesâ devs that happen to not optimize their sites for firefox as well. so, itâs like a double inconvenience? as many knows, yt is like the best example, but ytâs case is different as itâs owned by the rivalâs company. and for the rest, they donât bother cz of too low userbase share, i assume. even with betterfox.js and all of that, canât really change websitesâ compatibility cases with the browser by myself now, can i? did have hopes for a long time for things to get better. but yeah, who was i kidding.
eventually decided to give up and jump ship. chose brave ultimately after trying out a few of the chromium ones. donât get me wrong, brave has itâs own issues and all too. crypto bs, tor stuffs, the other unnecessary bloats, etc. had to put in some work and disable from the browser fully. they got their share of drama as well but personally donât care enough for those stuffs to look it up. product itself felt good enough after disabling unnecessary stuffs for me. so guess iâm kinda content with it for the time being.
still got firefox as the secondary choice tho. but barely get to use it, to tell the truth. donât really find the needs to. but that goes for any secondary choices on my end.
Look at Zen browser, still FF engine, but done with the user in mind
I'm waiting for servo and ladybird! I use firefox because of ubo and violentmonkey really, other than arkenfox.
zen browser
Zen doesnt support drm tho
not on windows, but if he has Linux it supports it. I'm hoping they get the damn DRM support soon
For me, the multi-account containers feature is important because anti-fingerprinting is being countered by the likes of
https://fingerprint.com/demo/
and I divide sites into various containers plus use some with several accounts.
I also like customization. Just doing something as simple as making the main menu available helps. I think Vivaldi's also very good.
For adblocking, there's uBlock Origin and Adguard, which I got through a cheap deal for lifetime subs (and works with various apps on the phone, too).
Given that and the speed problem, I just Chrome with Adguard for the phone.
Finally, I speeded up the Firefox desktop version by tweaking it, e.g., allowing prefetching, using Betterfox, etc.
Yeah feel like this is the experience a lot of people have. Including putting hope into Servo succeeding, which is going to take forever. I'd also check out Ladybird, not because it's ready but because it's another thing to look forward to in the future. Right now, the best tool for me and it seems for you is Brave. Would love an alternative because I sorta hate the company, but their product happens to be the best.
