Years ago I tried Vivaldi when they launched it on Windows and I went back to Chromium (when I still had Google Sync) because it consumed more RAM than Chrome or Chromium.
I've been using Thorium all these years (because I use drive, bookmarks, youtube, settings...) and now I've tried brave and vivaldi again.
I use Arch and I have made a comparison with the same open tabs in all the mentioned browsers at the same time and the one that consumes the least ram is Vivaldi and has better ram management.
I come here to take care of them. And I have also opted for Vivaldi because it has the ecosystem of having an account (synchronize bookmarks and settings).
And brave a negative point that I have taken into account apart from that, is the bloatware that carries unnecessary AI and wallet although it can be deactivated and also because of the Palantir investor who, although the code is open, I do not trust someone who was involved in that project.
EDIT_
One point that I see as a negative is that there is no translate page button with the right mouse button, although I have discovered that it has it in the address bar, but it is faster with the right button because you don't have to raise the view to the top.
A positive point that I don't know if it is integrated into the other chromes-chromiums is the stacking of host tabs in the same mosaic, how crazy!!! Anyone who likes reading in forums is crazy!!!
Opinions of people who have compared like me?
yes vivaldi is must have browser
There was recently a major update that included significant optimization for memory usage. In fact, it has new memory options that you can choose from to find the ones that best suit your needs. I switched from Brave to Vivaldi, and I can tell you that I am very happy, since Brave is now testing the inclusion of AI.
Great to hear Vivaldi has improved their RAM usage. I left Vivaldi because it consumed lots of RAM and was very unresponsive when there are lots of tabs and windows opened. May I ask do you notice any slowness or freezes when you back to Vivaldi?
NOTHING,I used today 30-40 tabs at the same time and is incredible, a lot tabs of youtube.
Try it today and come to comment, you will see ;)
Just to give an update. I updated Vivaldi and try to reopen from last session - it is in a loop of crashing and reopening. There are really lots of tabs and windows - 40+ windows with each 40+ tabs. The startup speed (the speed of crashing) is improved though. While the tab is reopening, it is still unresponsive.
i have always 15-20 tabs in my browser (mix of text and youtube) and i dont have problems with nothing. When start the first time with last session, open super fast. when i do click in a tab suspend, charge super fast too, i havent issues like you.
Im in arch+gnome+kernel cachyos. I try yesterday with more tabs opened, open close and reopen browser a lot times if i had crashes or slow, and work all perfect in speed.
Only i have a issue for move the icons of my extensions to left or right, i cant move extensions, i dont know which is the problem. Only that. Works Ublock origin original perfect.

watch the ram, with brave i had 1gb more and with thorium 1.5gb more. I try to open all tabs, clicking one-per-one and watching ram and dont go more high like thorium or brave i do the same process
I never used Vivaldi but i do know a friend who uses it and it looks really good for a chromium browser. Plus, it has uBO and no AI, alongside multiple extensions you dont typically see in Firefox. I like Vivaldi’s business model
I've been a long-time FF user. What worthy extensions would one get on Vivaldi, which aren't on FF?
How does Vivaldi score on the privacy and security front? I suppose it isn't open source.
I'm quite happy with Firefox, but wondering if a change is worthwhile.
I know that my friend showed me that i can get an extension which keeps your emails in one place, so i’d check that out
Okay, thanks.
Thinking further, I'd need a big reason to move from FF/Open-source to a closed source one like Vivaldi, though at times, it is tempting. This probably isn't it. For emails and much more, check out Ferdium.
I switch from FF to Vivaldi just for the RAM savings alone. Had all the same tabs open on both and Vivaldi was almost half.
Without checking RAM usage specifically, in day to day use (which might include dozens of tabs - but with Auto Discard Tab configured) I face no significant issues on FF.
There are privacy addons beyond uBO like Privacy Badger, Disconnect, Canvas Blocker, Decentralize, Cookie Discard etc too.
Then there are many little extensions one has been used to too - to translate, search selections (SSS), time zones, Youtube enhancer, Foxy Gestures, Obsidian Web-clipper, editing web-pages before printing, and so on. Too many things one has been used to on FF, making it increasingly difficult to move to another, even though the temptation is often there to look beyond.
How do you add Ublock to Vivaldi?
My friend said it was preinstalled i can ask him
The only reason i don't use Vivaldi is that i can't make the UI more minimalist + can't make vertical sidebar stay hidden and just open on hover.....
After being sick of Brave eating up my battery like it's an average Wednesday, I decided to give Vivaldi another shot, considering that my old phone model doesn't support Firefox properly, and I need syncing with my iPad. Im SO glad they finally added the importing/exporting bookmarks feature as I have no PC, and now I can browse the web faster :)
I recently switched to Vivaldi and have found it a refreshing easy browser. It took a while set it up so I'm still getting used to it.
Switched to Vivaldi from FF recently. Loving its performance and it’s been fun customizing it to my liking and making it a little lighter and cleaner looking in terms of UI. Speed is great. RAM usage is great. Overall I can’t complain.
In terms of resource usage (CPU, RAM), Vivaldi is similar to other Chromium-based browsers (Brave, Edge).
Vivaldi’s installation size on disk is significantly larger than that of other browsers (compared to Brave, it is about twice as large).
Vivaldi does not have an option to automatically clear browsing history when closing the browser.
In summary: Vivaldi works fine but does not stand out compared to other Chromium browsers. It is mainly suitable for users who enjoy customizing the interface.
