• Last year I bought some of those stretchy ice cleats from amazon. After the ice I put them away safe...

I have no idea where they are.

  • Van just crashed into the back of my kids bus after it slid. They are having to be switched over to another bus now. This was after they bumped the start back to avoid the icy roads..

  • Burst pipe and water running over ice so I can't tell what is what, it's practically a recipe for me falling over.

  • And then there's the businesses that have skating rinks for carparks and refuse to grit in case somebody slips and sues them. 🙃

That old chestnut. Always irritates me. They never seem to realise if there's no ice, you won't slip.

They think that somehow having a car park and not keeping up maintenance on it isn't also going to get them sued?

Always found this mental. If you grit to a reasonable standard, you have a defence. If your local Lidl decide not to grit, bring on the legal cases 😒

  • Our local council decided to remove all our local grit bins because of 'global warming' and as a cost cutting measure

I've still got no idea what they mean like that, even with rising temperatures we still get snow and ice each year

And surely filling a grit bin is cheaper than manually gritting every single road

Ours did the same, they used to grit our road years ago but now nada. There’s a school down a side road too so the past few days have been mental.

  • A big pair of socks over your shoes stops you slipping on ice. It’s like magic and better than any Amazon/temu crap.

Learnt this life hack that actually works years ago from a Norwegian and it's stood the test of time!

I have a few pairs of foot all socks for this purpose and never slipped on the icy pavements.

  • They've gritted the main high street paths in Selby, it's like walking on pebbles! Had to put the Crocs in to off road mode

  • Our council just completely ignore my road and the paths. The road is a reasonable incline. Also not a grit bin in sight so just take your life in your hands

  • I fell this morning, four steps out of the building :(

Slipped another 3-4 times in the half an hour walk to work.

Not looking forward going home in the dark - at least in the morning I could see which parts of pavement are ice.

  • I’m staying home, I’ve got a cold and feel like shite

  • I don't know about anywhere else but where I live, residents of my street take the initiative and go out with shovels and buckets to the grit bin and grit the pavements in advance of an ice or snow warning 🤷‍♀️

What is this magical grit bin of which you speak? Our council removed them all years ago to save money.

Ah finally a sane comment! I was reading these comments like ‘where has everyone got this expectation the council will come and clear all the snow from all the roads, pavements, footpaths and bridleways in the country every night before you get up to go to work come from?’ Does everyone here live in central London or something? My whole life, 4 different areas they clear the main streets, community clears the side ones. I mean it would be nice… but not exactly feasible… maybe everyone here would like to volunteer for a council overnight gritting club to make it reality?

That going to work thing you mention - that's why no one has the time to do spontanous unscheduled voluntary work. Most people don't even have time for hobbies in this economy.

Once we've got 28hour weeks we can talk about your idea.

But it’s always been like that? Do you think in the 50’s men were making their wives shovel snow while they went to work? The average job is less physical now. It’s not even my idea, it’s just how things are… you just sound a bit soft and selfish like most of society these days. Someone do it for me while I get paid the same to do 1/3 the work. It’s you with the new idea… tbh if you can pull it off I’m all for it… it sounds great! I assume though you’re not actually doing anything about it, just complaining and waiting for someone to do for you?

  • who ever dumps grit outside the local school each yr wasting it needs sacking

  • I slipped this morning, a massive bruise has now appeared on my left arm. And the fall cracked my phone screen that was in my bag. 😓

  • To be fair, when a pedestrian slips it doesn’t kill other pedestrians

No, just little old ladies break a hip and die in hospital.

I’m heavily pregnant and also have a 15 month old. Slipping on the ice terrifies me at the moment - potentially hurting my unborn baby and taking the pram with me/leaving the pram to roll away scares me so much

Didn’t say you did..! But icy pavements can be dangerous too, that’s all
