There's so much junk, I'd love to have an option to do a current search if I need like actually new info but most searches I do are not on current events so I'd like to have the default be non-slop results where I don't need to set the time to before 2021 manually each time. Anyone have a good tip? I know extensions exist for Google but I prefer avoiding that search engine
Adding '&udm=14' to the end of the Google URL will set 'Web' as the default search mode. You would need to update the search engine url to stop doing it manually every time.
That is a useful trick to be aware of but OP doesn't want to use Google:
Yeah I know but OP not said which engine. The one I know about is Google because I tried it once but went back to default. AI results are becoming more useful at times.
Extensions only other sensible option because adding custom urls is tricky but not difficult. Often the change does not sync across devices.
> Extensions only other sensible option because
It's not the only other option.
*Brave also has a toggle in the search settings to disable "answer with AI" but its not clear whether that disables all AI features or just one particular feature.
I use an extension that disables the AI results on my desktop. I'm not at home right now but I can update this comment later today and let you know
Duckduckgo makes this pretty easy in 1 of 2 ways, either:
Brave Search may have some comparable options, but I haven't looked into it.
I bet DDG has a !bang that will let me search that non-AI option directly
Good thinking, I hope so, if not
somebody should submit one[edit: I just submitted one, if it gets approved the bang will be!noai]There is a new extension tailor made for his called the Slop Evader:

/u/SpartacusScroll mentioned adding a parameter to kill off AI in Google, no need for another extension. Here's the howto on that:
Google Search’s “udm=14” trick lets you kill AI search for good
I named mine "No AI".
That's a handy strategy for those using Google, but OP mentioned not wanting to use Google:
oops, missed that
