I'm a manager of a restaurant in central Pennsylvania and we had some nasty ice storms last night that basically kept everyone home and off the roads. We sent most of the staff home early and closed at 9pm (normally open till at least like 1am)
Even then, it’s impressive how these movies hold during the weekdays. It’s the only film series where the weekday returns are as big as weekend releases for new movies. It’s always wild to see the legs Avatar has to any other film
not just the snowstorm - west coast had a huge rainstorm with flood watch warnings almost the entire week, so people also didn't go out as often either.
Avatar 2 was released on the 14th compared to Avatar 3 on the 17th. Not a good comparison at all for the Global totals. There is a drop though but it's not that big if you give Avatar 3 3 more days.
A2 had essentially zero competition outside Puss in Boots. A3 still putting up numbers despite a much more crowded field this time around is quite impressive.
I’m being a little more conservative with my estimate, but I don’t think it’s unrealistic. The franchise is known for its legs, but I’m a little hesitant to think it’ll make $200 million this weekend and next to get it there. Regardless, it’s not unrealistic
Avatar 2 hit 1 billion in 14 days. Fire and Ash was sitting around $540 million after 7 days, so it basically has to match the first week total in the second week to hit 1 billion in the same amount of time
It’s weird how crazy everyone on both sides gets with every update about this movie when basically all signs point to it doing a boring $1.6–1.8B range. High enough for fans to defend it, big enough of a drop from the last movie for haters to point to. And that’s just it.
Who the fuck is watching this movie? In my time since 2009 friends, family and or co-workers that I know have never said hey let's go watch Avatar, or you should watch it or Avatar it was great, and also I've never even heard someone quote any of those movies.

Yea it’s def just the storms on the states then I think.
I'm a manager of a restaurant in central Pennsylvania and we had some nasty ice storms last night that basically kept everyone home and off the roads. We sent most of the staff home early and closed at 9pm (normally open till at least like 1am)
I’m near Philly. The zoo even canceled their annual Christmas lights event. It was rough.
yeah we didnt even get that much snow but the sleet/freezing rain was brutal in philly last night
I was about to see it today but the snow storms forced us to cancel those tickets. We’ll be going to see it next weekend instead
Even then, it’s impressive how these movies hold during the weekdays. It’s the only film series where the weekday returns are as big as weekend releases for new movies. It’s always wild to see the legs Avatar has to any other film
That's the Christmas period for you
From pandora
It holding as well in the weekdays is not uncommon among films this period, it’s the scale that’s impressive.
and across multiple markets
This is literally every movie christmas break time. The real test is the weekdays after January 4th.
That means the film has a high chance of doing better in its third weekend then its second.
Just like Avatar TWOW
Just like Avatar!
Just like Titanic!
Just like Frozen!
It’s like 2009 all over again! 😂
It wouldn’t be an Avatar movie without a storm in its 1st or 2nd week/weekend.
True, and this happened with the first film.
More like Avatar: ice and snow amiright
And to think that that’s basically no competition in the next two months…
3 months
I'd say January and February. By March the staying power starts to falter and even the more non-eventful films would prove to be competition.
Lots of horror movies in January but that's about it.
I am convinced the winterstorm affected the NA box office for boxing day.
In other words- we’re so back
Also in other words - excellent 3rd weekend drop loading because of spillovers.
We had never left haha!
Avatar movies and Winter Storms affecting the NA boxoffice. Name a more iconic duo ^^
At this point, it's a tradition for an Avatar movie to get affected by winter storms.
I think JC has weather manipulation superpowers. /s
r/boxoffice and the avatar is irrelevant duo ig?
Didn’t winter storms hit The Last Wish pretty hard too?
The exact same thing had happened with Avatar 1 and Avatar 2 if I recall.
Avatar and snowstorms are just made for each other at this point lol.
The next one should be Avatar: Snow and Ice
Nice!!
It is the way of water :D
OS more than made up for the domestic drop. $67M+ on Boxing Day. +11% from Christmas day of $60.4M globally

Great observation!

Eywa heard our prayers
Oh so you’re telling me the dip in domestic is due to the snowstorm, just like the last 2 times? When will folks learn.
Avatar haters really came back from the woods as soon as it had a glimpse of a dip to jump back on the hate train like no tomorrow.
not just the snowstorm - west coast had a huge rainstorm with flood watch warnings almost the entire week, so people also didn't go out as often either.
$750M global by Sunday
Watched it today, great entertainment, James Cameron does it again
James Cameron does what James Cameron does because James Cameron is James Cameron.
Source?
South Park
Eywa heard us.

A2 did $52.2M on Boxing Day in 2022 as a comparison.
Global Totals through the 26th: A2($955M) vs A3($610M)
Avatar 2 was released on the 14th compared to Avatar 3 on the 17th. Not a good comparison at all for the Global totals. There is a drop though but it's not that big if you give Avatar 3 3 more days.
not just 3 more days. whole weekend is missing
Yeah. That's probably $250M more for Avatar 3.
Yeah the OS drops aren’t as harsh as the Dom drops but there are still drops. The film is a success no doubt tho.
Avatar 2 released 3 days before Avatar 3 though.
A2 had essentially zero competition outside Puss in Boots. A3 still putting up numbers despite a much more crowded field this time around is quite impressive.
Crowded field?? Come on
What was the avatar 2 collection after 7 days of release?
Box Office Mojo is reporting $545 million worldwide already. I think it hits $1 billion before the end of January personally
https://preview.redd.it/isyoqtks8s9g1.jpeg?width=666&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e767b2ae32f51ed8fb4a85d2611ef140e57245b7
Its going to be at 750-800 milion worldwide by the end of this week, its passing a billion this coming week.
I’m being a little more conservative with my estimate, but I don’t think it’s unrealistic. The franchise is known for its legs, but I’m a little hesitant to think it’ll make $200 million this weekend and next to get it there. Regardless, it’s not unrealistic
Its going to be higher he's been lowballing since the start of the run for some reason.
he doesn’t like the movies and it bleeds into his coverage
He doesn't like Avatar, he's a Marvel shill. He lowballed Avatar 2 aswell. Said it would never hit 2 billion.
It will get to a billion no problem.
The only question with billion was whether it would happen before new year or after.
The question was always about 2B.
How many days did avatar 2 take to make 1 billion?
Avatar 2 hit 1 billion in 14 days. Fire and Ash was sitting around $540 million after 7 days, so it basically has to match the first week total in the second week to hit 1 billion in the same amount of time
7 days? It's been 10 days since release ww
14 days
14 days
I think it’s more just a question of how close it gets to 2 billion if it doesn’t surpass it
That would be an epic flop for avatar
at this point it's $2B or bust for Avatar 3
It’s weird how crazy everyone on both sides gets with every update about this movie when basically all signs point to it doing a boring $1.6–1.8B range. High enough for fans to defend it, big enough of a drop from the last movie for haters to point to. And that’s just it.
I think that’s why everyone gets so crazy honestly. No one’s really happy with that range because it doesn’t validate anyone’s perspective.
As to why a guaranteed 1.5b is worth debating for any camp is simply baffling.
I think it's more if it's gonna end up being No 3 or No 2 worldwide by the end of the run as Zootopias also probably coming in at that range too.
Stop you're making sense. This movie will drop from A2 but not big enough to stop A4. End of story.
🎯
1.5 is where it tops out. It’s like these kids aren’t counting the christmas break.
But muh cultural impact
i didn't get to see it yet been very sick
don't worry labubuking, varang is waiting for you

get well soon
No problem you will help with the legs
Sheesh 😳
It was at $544mil yesterday.. is that only international ?
Yes, that is internationally.
Let's goo! Love to see it
This math seems a bit off
Doing my part today 🔥
I’m catching it this Monday. Add my money to the pool!
730M by this weekend?
Probably 750M (unless Saturday and Sunday are a bit weaker than expected).
How does this compare to opening Friday?
If you take the money made in previews out domestically the opening Friday-2nd Friday was only a 2M drop.
Eywa is.
Who the fuck is watching this movie? In my time since 2009 friends, family and or co-workers that I know have never said hey let's go watch Avatar, or you should watch it or Avatar it was great, and also I've never even heard someone quote any of those movies.
How lazy do you gotta be to write # instead of "numbers"? 🤨
damn so sinners' level of drop won't happen ig
Sinners dropped 2% from its opening weekend.
Avatar 3 might drop 2% from its 2nd weekend.
