2032 is frozen (for now). No one on the team or the league is under contract for 2030-2031. Taum will be 33 years old. Brown will be 35. White will be 37. Gonzalez will be 25. (Brad Stevens will be 54.)

What kind of deal must be on the table to consider parting with it?

They gave up an unprotected 2029 pick two + years ago to get Jrue Holliday. This would be a similar number of years into the future. When they gave up the 2029 pick, they knew the swap with SAS was in place for the 2028 pick, but they had all their other picks. They offered to swap the 2028 pick in mid-2022 (six + years in advance).

Trading 2031 means no pick in 2029 or in 2031, after a 2028 pick certainly in the 20s.

Is there any player worth it (and even remotely available)? If it is 2026 and 2031, are they so far apart that it is more palatable? I don't think there is, especially since that pick could be in an era where either Brown or Tatum are no longer dominating games.

  • I hope im still alive in 2031

  • Idk. Picks are picks. Just a tool to get players. Hauser has been a rotation player for years and he was undrafted. Cs are showing they have multiple avenues to get useful players so I really have no idea what level of player would have to be on table to get him, I suppose if the player is GOOD and the team has a need for them then use it.

  • Damn nice tatum will only be 33

He can play another 7 years at 33. Niceeeeee

  • I imagine the Celtics only trade that pick in and around 2031, because being that pick negative 5 years out is bad business and how a team creates a super team for another team (*cough* Nets, Clippers *cough*). Because even if a star player wants to come to the Celtics, but is under contract elsewhere, if we gut our asset pool for that star player in a trade, we have no avenue to build around that star player.... so in short, I'm just not comfortable with trading picks that far out, especially considering the ages of the core players will be by then

  • Wouldn’t the pick only be frozen if we were in the 2nd apron for consecutive years? Boston is comfortably out of the 2nd apron now and below the 1st as well, but still over the luxury taxes which penalises the payroll/ownership, not the front office with pick problems or trade restrictions.

I thought it was set to unfreeze at the start of the next NBA year, assuming the Cs are, indeed, below the second apron. I don't think BOS is under the 1st apron. They are about $8million above that.

u/Son_of_Atreus I get my pick information from RealGM Boston Celtics Future Draft Picks - RealGM

Further examination reveals this from Sportsnet:

Finally, teams above the second apron at the end of the regular season will have their first-round draft pick seven years out frozen so that it can't be used in any trades. The only way to unfreeze it would be to duck the second apron in at least three of the next four years.

For example, if a team's above the second apron on the last day of the 2024-25 season, its 2032 first-rounder will be frozen, and the earliest the pick could be traded would be after the 2027-28 season. However, if a team remains above the second apron in at least two of the four years after having its pick frozen, that frozen pick moves to the bottom of the first round, no matter how poorly the team performs.

  • You can’t trade that pick. At some point the team will need to rebuild. Unless a few younger stars manifest in the next 3 seasons (Hugo?) the team will be in the lottery at that point.

It's a tough balance. This is probably the biggest parity era the NBA's ever had. Swapping future assets for a chance at 2-3 titles in the now and delaying a rebuild by a year or two doesn't sound ideal but the Celtics are still a playoff team with Tatum from 31-33 pretty easily. I don't discount the depth building later picks in the 20s can provide though.

  • Next year they can trade 2031 and 2033 (and 2027). I would rather see them go after something more impactful with more ammo, or not trade 2031 at all.

  • Assuming Tatum/Brown/White would still be here I think we would have to bring in youth to mold for the next championship window.

Brown has said he doesn’t want to play until his late 30’s and by 35 he might be all star level at best. Tatum will be leaving his prime. He might still be a top 10-15 player but we will need more fire power. White will probably be a role player off the bench by 37 .

    I trust Brad’s judgement
