"In this world, a society of people live in an enormous, enclosed space with contiguous video screens covering nearly every surface offering personalized entertainment. They earn their living by riding on exercise bikes in order to power their surroundings, earning currency known as Merits."
No, we won't even have it that good because AI robots will power the exercise bikes, each other and everything else for free. They'll just work in shifts.
I love that they used a photo of a real window and photoshopped the tv frame in, because if they used a photo of what it would actually look like it would appear even more depressing.
That being said, I do understand why people would want something like this. In fact I have a large room in my basement with no windows, and I’ve considered installing artificial windows to make it less depressing to use.
I like how people commenting are pretending that they'd rather look out their window at suburban sprawl or an adjacent building or a concrete wasteland rather than something someone would actually want to view. Yes, I would much rather look at a video of somewhere in nature compared to the AC unit outside my window. Hell fucking yes. Sign me up.
Is it more depressing than a wall? I have a small office attached to my home that’s kinda dark and doesn’t have much in the way of windows or natural light. A product that looks like a window but is really a light wouldn’t be so bad imo, so i could see the draw of a window that has a view.
If this provides blue light therapy, I don't see how this product would be bad or boring dystopia. Plenty of people suffer from seasonal affective disorder (SAD), and blue light therapy helps SAD when there's less sunlight.
Is this not a really great option for people with abysmal views in their regular window? Like highly dense apartments that look out to another apartment building a few feet away.
On a ferry that I boarded at night (the cabin wasn't on an outside wall).
Also my office has no windows for security purposes but we do have fake skylights which are a little unnerving. A screen showing a live view of the industrial estate would feel more realistic so maybe that would actually be better?
Thanks for posting, u/imgoodthnxtho!

Unless it's a spaceship window, I'm not interest.

Agreed. If I'm going to have fake windows I want some extra cool fantasy or otherworldly views.
Oh! A villainous volcano lair outside my window would be nice!
So we are just heading towards Fifteen Million Merits then:
"In this world, a society of people live in an enormous, enclosed space with contiguous video screens covering nearly every surface offering personalized entertainment. They earn their living by riding on exercise bikes in order to power their surroundings, earning currency known as Merits."
After 7 seasons, fifteen million merits is still in my top 3 favourites. Who ever is reading this, and havent seen it. Do it now
It's definitely in the top 3, no question.
Top three for me are:
Fifteen Million Merits
Shut Up and Dance
Demon 79
This is San Junipero erasure, and I will not stand for this.
I see your San Junipero and I raise you USS Callister.
Out of all episodes, it's that one that comes back to me the most.

“You are now tuned to the scenery channel, broadcasting beautiful views 24 hours a day.”
I went looking for the Back to the Future Part II references as soon as I read the title...
Ted Kaczynski noises
Does it come with UV light?
“Wouldn’t it be cool if there was this thing that let you see outside? Wouldn’t you want that?”
Maybe in the kind of apartment that has windows that just look straight into the window of the next door apartment. Maybe

The image is gonna be static, there is no parallax. It’s gonna be depressing as hell.

Idk man, I’d rather have a painting on my wall and enough artificial light, than another monitor to stare at.

Wasn't this a Black Mirror episode?
This reminds me of a dystopian short story I read once in high school, can't remember the name unfortunately.
