I spent last week playing through some FPS games I had installed but had not finished yet. Then I got to Ion Fury, which I played the main campaign a couple years ago, but still needed to play through the expansion, Aftershock.

It felt like getting home after a long trip.

This game is amazing! The movement feels perfect, maps are great, it is graphically stunning, weapons are fun, the difficulty is on point (Maximum Fury).

I did not finish the expansion yet, but the first 3 maps were awesome. And the soundtrack slaps.

Seriously, if you like old school FPSes and never played Ion Fury, what are you doing with your life?

  • Easily one of my favorites of the modern boom shoot revival alongside Selaco and Hedon. I think I just have a thing for GZDoom/Build Engine games.

DLC is also fantastic and surprisingly long. Shame there doesn't seem to be much of a community making custom maps for it though.

I have not tried (or even heard of) Hedon - but I 100% agree. This is exactly my take and I rank both games highly. They feel like a perfect take on classic shooters, but also being their own thing.

  • I didn't enjoy the latter half of the base game, but Aftershock is just SOOOO good. An improvement in every single way.

  • Dude I'm playing this for like the fifth time right now. It's so damn good. The level design, the art direction, and difficulty... it's perfect. I love the last levels in the small towns. And like you said, the movement is perfect. This has really dawned on me this last playthrough... It's just so fuckin' FAST.

I can't stop playing this dammed expansion. I really hope the team that made this is working on something new Build Engine related for their next game, their in a league of their own.

  • Yessir. It's great. My favorite build game.

  • Yum yum yum.

  • Sorry but I didn't really enjoy the main campaign, felt like there was too many underground, cramped levels and the enemies felt a little bland after awhile (especially those robot spiders). However, Aftershock was great, when they gave the game a bigger open space environment to move around thats where I started to enjoy it.

  • One of the best boomer shooters - looking forward to picking up aftershock at some point.

  • I haven’t played aftershock yet but holy fuck ion fury is so good

  • I love Ion Fury. Replaying through Aftershock right now then I'm going to do an arrange mode run. It feels like a true successor to Duke 3D and in my opinion it stands up there next to the build engine trinity. The level design is amazing and after working my way through an area, I love going back not just to look for secrets I missed but see all the destruction I left behind. It impresses me how far they were able to go with the build engine.

  • My favorite from the genre

  • The soundtrack is truly super good. Bought it after finishing playing through the game and listening to it often.

And the secrets ... man are they well hidden sometimes. The secrets have Metroid Prime quality feeling to them, if not even harder.

This is easily one of the best single player shooters I played.

  • if you like Ion Fury you'll also like: Ashes Afterglow

  • Probably my favorite modern boomer shooter, though I'm glad I made my first playthrough on Normal, as if I'd started higher it may have colored my perceptions of it negatively.

  • Haven't finished it, but at worst, it plays like a lesser Build era game. At best, it could have potentially rivaled Duke 3D. Really good combat and level design.

  • Anyone who didn't enjoy the base game should try the DLC. Aftershock is probably as good as anything to come out of the boomer shooter revival, IMO.

I already loved Ion Fury, but Aftershock is objectively a much tighter experience.

  • I thought it was mid. Every other level is a sewer level lol

It's been a couple years, but I don't even remember Sewer levels in Ion Fury.

Episodes 4, and 6 are really bad for that. Mostly underground and lots of underwater sections. Easily the worst episodes in the game. Knee Deep in Ep 5 is sewer fatigue also.

I think they learned their lessons with the later episodes as Aftershock is excellent from start to finish.

Cool! Aftershock's on my wishlist, I'll probably pick it up if it gets discounted to $5 or below on sale.

  • What platform did you play it on?

  • What do you think of the criticism I see where people say that the level design in the beginning was amazing but fell off towards the end? Almost as if the ending was rushed and not as polished or inspired as the first levels?

The later levels aren't the best ones in the game, that's true. But I don't think the game becomes "bad" in any way. Those are just not as good as the earlier ones.

Later part of the game still has great design, it just gets a little monotonous with the settings. Very well made, but endless sewers and biolabs.

  • Great game of the very best

  • No u play it. I played it. :D

    Though I wouldn't mind more of this:D

  • why does Phantom Fury get so much hate

It's kinda boring and repetitive, but I like it. I'd rather cut the game in half to make it more diverse.

  • I've been waiting for this to come out physically. I'd love to play it and I really enjoyed the first game. I'm just not into buying digital games.

  • Need to start my run. I got this, Dusk, and Qyake1&2 to get to. Rise of Triad the ludacris edition maybe. Oh, and Shadow Warrior series. I got to get busy. Glad to see Iron Fury mentioned.

  • Soo guttered i missed out on the xmas sale!

  • Hell yeah

  • Love this game, felt like the true sequel to DN3D. Great gunplay, movement and level design, my only real complaints were the overuse of small annoying enemies.

Shame Phantom Fury was so mediocre though, I got stuck a few hours in and never had the enthusiasm to try again.

  • Can’t wait to play this DLC i gotta get phantom too!

  • And yo, this beats cyberpunk imo

    THIS GAME IS A CUTSCENE

  • Playing this right now I am in chapter 4. So great! I love it! Haven't bought aftershock yet.

  • It's great. The only thing I wish is that it had a slightly more serious and less goofy tone, but everything else about it is fantastic.

When you're doing an homage to the Duke, you gotta stay goofy

Absolutely, duke is campy to the core lol
