Hi everyone,
Nice to e-meet you! I’m getting boho knotless braids for the first time. I haven’t had braids in over 10 years, so I’m doing a lot of research on maintenance and hair prep. TikTok and this sub have been super helpful, but one thing I’m having trouble finding clear advice on is how to best protect your natural hair from breakage while the braids are in.
So far, my plan is to keep the braids in for about 8–12 weeks, do biweekly washes, and use oils/serums regularly for my scalp.
I’ve read a lot about braid tightness causing breakage, especially around the edges. This might be a silly question, but is there a way to know if the braids are too tight while the stylist is doing them?
I haven’t had braids in a decade and I usually do my own hair (wash-and-gos or two-strand twists on my natural hair), so I’m not used to other people doing my hair and I’m not sure what to expect.
Any tips on: • What “too tight” actually feels like • What to say to the stylist in the moment • General breakage-prevention while wearing knotless braids
would be super helpful. Thank you!
Them not washing your hair and using proper products that help with moisture and retention: using too much gel just to braid (they can’t braid then). Attitude. Lack of returning clientele. A lot of things honestly.
Thanks for replying! Its my first time going to this stylist, but she has good reviews, active socials and was recommended by a friend, so I’m hoping for the best, but I’ll watch out too
I’m late but when they ‘trim’ the braiding hair down each braid. There’s no way the braider cannot cut your hair too. If your hair is mid back they are absolutely cutting your hair too.
Ah okay, my braider added curly pieces to the ends on my braids so all the trimming was on the synthetic hair thankfully
