There is a guy at my gym that defends my ankle locks in gi by grabbing double lapels and pulling me in. I cant fully drop my elbow/shoulder and extend the foot when he does this. He just out strengths me until I give up. Is there a way around this or is this just an inherit problem with ankle locking while in gi? Any grip breaking techniques without losing postion?

  • Put your foot in his armpit, lean back and when his grip breaks put your foot back on his hip. Can use your spare hand to help as well.

You doing this slow or aggressive?

Not aggressive. It’s attrition. His grip will fail.

    This is the way.

  • I ankle lock with the butterfly ashi hook, and the ankle locking arm grabbing my own far collar.

I have my top foot and non ankle locking arm free if needed to help break grips.

So one leg frames and pushes against their chest / armpit. My other free arm helps break grip

  • You need to push him away. Can't grab if far away.

Free leg you mean the inside leg? I can't picture it at all

  • this is one reason it's usually a good idea to break people down to a hip before attacking their legs. knock them over so their hands are busy building height instead of grabbing you, while you establish an entanglement that prevents their reach.

He usually does this when he gets placed on his hips though. I'll get in a good ashi position pinning the hip and leg, but since I don't have any upper body control, he just crunches up and does a sort of "toe touch" stretch until he reaches my lapels. He is a relatively flexible dude so it feels very difficult to actually hold him down. He doesn't worry about building height, just defending and holding grip until I give up. So eventually I just give up and go for position instead, but I feel like I'm missing something more.

if possible, use one of your legs to stomp his upper body out of reach.

get your own body into extension more quickly, ie bridging toward the finish, so your grip becomes too far away for him to reach.

  • Depending on where you both are, attack the head. They will defend with hand(s) and/or posturing. If your legs are controlling/pinning the hip, you should be able to fall back into controlling knee to foot and attacking.

  • Belly down. Seated ankle locks aren’t real. Lol
