Typical commute home from work: an SUV merged directly into another car's lane - that car swerved to avoid it, but lost control and swerved to a stop near the left shoulder.

I didn't hear an impact, but it is possible they hit the center divider. I just put my hazards on ASAP and hoped everyone on the left lane avoided them safely.

  • I’ve never understood why people don’t check their blind spots… seriously! I hope the person in the smaller car is okay and can get compensation if their car was damaged, it looks like they hit the median

They simply don’t think that there could be a car there.

    It’s just… stupidity.

Then when you do “suddenly appear out of nowhere,” to them, it looks like you sped up to block them from merging because they thought it was empty space. They might even road rage on you due to thinking this.

    Ask me how I know!

I’ve seen videos of this on the idiotsdrivingcars subreddit before. Merging car (totally at fault) almost slams into the car they’re merging into, but they then react by honking or cutting them off later. Lol

Supposedly only about a third of drivers report checking their mirrors and/or blind spots when they change lanes. Which means I guess the majority just look slightly to the side to see if the space by their driver or passenger door is open before moving over.

ONLY A THIRD?? Lord help us….

driving makes people stupider. for anyone who has ever driven a car before. you know this to be true.

Yeah, I’ve been making weekly trips from Sonoma to Burlingame and I have actually been noticing this a lot lately. Most people flip their turn signal on and just merge immediately without even checking or waiting a second. At least knowing this has helped me anticipate people’s behavior and avoid a lot of collisions. But it’s not a joke how much people lack awareness when driving lately and it really is worse than ever.

i think these people are afraid to leave the signal on for too long because they are afraid that the car behind closes the door.

A lot of cars have automatic detection now. You have to exclude them from the statistic.

You're still supposed to look even if you have blind spot detection lol

It's not actually written in the law that you have to turn your head:

No person shall turn a vehicle from a direct course or move right or left upon a roadway until such movement can be made with reasonable safety and then only after the giving of an appropriate signal in the manner provided in this chapter in the event any other vehicle may be affected by the movement.

Also those sensors are a lot better at looking than turning your head because they're able to look all the time, while you have to turn your head back before making the move. There's been a few cases where I almost ran to someone because they were coming from 2 lanes over and 15 mph faster than me. It's very difficult to see someone that far away even if they were signaling (which they probably weren't).

The keyword is “reasonable safety”. The sensors are there to assist that, not a guarantee of that (what if they are malfunctioned). Also, you only need to look over the shoulder, not turn the head all the way to watch for the blind spot.

Looking over the shoulder is a good habit and will benefit you in the long run.

    Now you're just coping.

Three typical idiot drivers lacking situational awareness

  • Suv guy was a imbecile. geez. so many people troubled.

  • I do enjoy a good post-move signal. Whack that stalk down after I’ve already entered the other lane. Keeps people on their toes.

Easier said than done, but in these situations, better to let them hit you than to try to evade because it’ll actually be your fault if you then hit another car due to evasive actions.

I see patients in my clinic for accidents like these and one of mine is considered at fault for basically the same situation. Some other driver almost merged into him but he’s financially responsible because they didn’t actually make contact whereas he did to another car. It sucks

That's really good to know. Had wondered about that.

Sad for your patient though, on top of dealing with after effects of accidents. Hope they're OK going back to driving.

I saw him for back pain after the accident. I don’t think any major injuries and he should eventually recover.

But he’s responsible for paying for that medical visit and the car repairs and the probably higher insurance premiums now. I felt so bad for him.

He showed me the video and it was basically like OP’s video. Except he crashed into another car. 😞

Glad to hear he'll physically recover. That does suck 😟

Hope he's mentally OK too. I had a relative who had a car accident that took a toll and they didn't feel safe driving for years.

Makes me wonder if the original car (that swerved) stayed or took off in his case. Just remembered I was in a car accident (friend driving) where the initiator had no damage but stayed. The cops basically said he'd caused the crash, but I'm not sure how insurance ended up attributing responsibility.

  • SUV's stupidity aside, WTF was that "yank the wheel as hard as possible to destabilize the vehicle" maneuver that the black Honda did?

That was pretty much the worst way they could've handled that.

It's not uncommon for people to have that "oh sh**" thought and jerk the wheel. I don't like driving in those far left lanes up against the barriers. But then again, I remember the days when 101 had NONE of those barriers and you were blinded by lights of cars coming at you from the opposite direction.

...and pulling over literally in the fast lane to collect themselves.

They didn't "pull over", they literally crashed into the median wall.

  • One day, humanity will look back at this period in disbelief that billions of people were allowed to operate vehicles

the thing is you drive in some european or asian countries and nearly everyone is competent. It’s mostly the third world and us that’s fucked

I see you've never driven in Italy before.

Italians are lawless but generally not incompetent from what i’ve seen

  • Definitely not the fault of the black car, but Jesus horrible response. Could have just slowed down or not jerked the wheel left and right 4 times. Almost caused an accident when one is completely avoidable here.

  • the white car in the left lane slamming on their brakes was clearly not paying attention either. driving in the bay fucking sucks

Every single person in the bay who merges onto the freeway just has to fucking send it as far left as possible regardless of displacement of vehicles and it makes me want to off myself

No obviously the big displacement vehicle (white suv) wanted to do this more than other vehicles.

Heck it even displaced a whole Honda

Literally watched as some dude in a minivan full of kids almost did this to me. Just merged fully across four lanes without even LOOKING left. I waited until he got close and laid on the horn, and THEN he noticed and swerved away. Like bro. Why are you “good luck everyone else”-ing me

  • I swear idk who has worse spatial awareness; Costco Shoppers or Bay Area drivers

  • It is called a(n):

    1) Indicator 2) Signal 3) Blinker

    Fucking use it

Um.. the SUV was using it… didn’t make them correct

    Student driver, please be patient!

  • Unbelievable!

  • Have to pay more attention for sure…

  • That part like right after 380 is the worst

  • Waymos, hurry up and replace the humans. They are too clumsy, impatient and retarded. Hurry Waymos, I want to save lives.

  • nice rivian delivery truck in the right.

  • If the black Honda doesn’t move he could easily pit maneuver that white SUV

  • Oh this area suuuuucks

  • Suv driver is a moron and made a mistake but that civic is arguably an even worse driver 🤣

JFC this is why every little situation turns into a miles long backup.

  • This is why I prefer to use Caltrain

  • Looks like a land / Range Rover that shit should’ve had some kind of blind spot warning

  • I love the over-correction that always comes in these types of driving incidents in the bay. LOL

  • I wonder if this is a tourist not familiar with the freeway? Seems like there was a similar video posted not to long ago from the same exact spot.

Being a tourist doesn't excuse you from being an idiot. Do they not have lane markings where you come from?
