Exactly! A dwarven warrior clad head to foot in steel with a shield that he can cover himself with is such a classic archetype, and for a very good reason 😁
They addressed this when the game released. Initially it would be race specific armour, but they realized quickly how frustrating that would be for the players, "Dwarf armour, again?
Yeah, from what I understand IRL it had to be pretty precisely fitted to your individual body. The measurements had to be exact for you to be able to move about properly in battle and not just be a cumbersome clumsy pincushion lumbering about the battlefield.
Even armor made for another human wouldn't be especially useful.
Dwarven Defender behind enchanted full plate with shield cover nearly head to toe going "HIT ME!! I DARE YOU!!" then knee capping enemies with a hammer
I always try to imagine just how hard it would be for a group (orcs, humans whatever) to attack a group of well armed and trained dwarves in their hold. You come into a narrow tunnel and are met within nothing but a wall of shields, spears, hammers, etc supported by either crossbows or depending on the universe musket shot. They know these halls, this is their home and they will die to the last dwarf standing to defend it. Decades if not hundreds of years of training all for this moment.
Anyone else think ALL the shields (with maybe the exception of the large shield design from BG2, not the rectangular BG1 version) look better on the shorty races?
For example I never use bucklers because I think it looks awkward but on my recent run I put one on Kagain wielding an axe and it looks exactly right.
Hey, looks like my Yeslick! I also like the dwarves with Paws of the Cheetah. I had Yeslick and Alora in my party, they’re so cute zooming around the map.
Yeah it's pretty cool and adds some realism. Not all equipment will suit everyone that finds it which is a nice touch. For armour sets they couldn't pull that off as easily as it would get complicated unless they made armour specifically for each race so it was easier to make it universal , changing size and style depending on wearer
A lot of games scale the equipment to your character model, but in Baldur's Gate I think it's literally the same shield the big people use.
It looks fucking huge on Yeslick. Just try and hit him.
I like this version. if it scales down the shield then why do we have the dwarf tank fantasy?
I mean, in the game, it really is the same shield.
I’ve also always loved this. Thanks for making the thread, OP.
and in all games, yet as he said it scales the items
Oh, okay! I think I’ve actually never played a game that does that. :D But, idk, maybe I didn’t notice.
Other post here mentioned armour in BG. Yeah, I think that actually scales to the race.

You can also don armor taken from a corpse of a fire giant on a halfling. No adjustments needed. :)

The whole idea of looting armour is a fantasy. Oh, luckily it’s a fantasy game!

Only chainmail could be considered one size fits most. And even then there are limiting factors like weight.

One of my favourite classes. But I prefer DD to dual wield hammers 'cause the DR is good enough without the extra AC.

The romans fought like this against barbarians too, remember?
The beauty of the infinity engine games is timeless.
"A small man with a big shield... You'll give the archers fits" - classic Bronn line to Tyrion in Game of Thrones.
That helmet looks rather impractical :-)
Helm of Infravision. Completely useless on him.
Branwen was wearing it before he replaced her and took all her stuff.
Not useless. Crit reduction is important!
True. It is still as good as any ordinary unenchanted helmet on him. It doesn't make his head more soft and permeable or anything.
Completely useless on everyone, funnily enough.
I love this 🤣🤣🤣
Shorties always have the best swag. Jan with the pimp robes, just a chef's kiss of an outfit.

Lego hands!
Yeah, while we're at it, let's talk about that big-ass sledgehammer in Yeslick's hand, too. That thing looks just as tall as he is.
You “could” go with a small shield or buckler. 😂

Yup.
Ashidena and what shield you used?
Shield of the fallen star.
The one you get for retrieving tremain's son from the priestesses of umberlee.
SHORT?!
