Hi all, doing my first solo run of BGEE with plans to do the whole saga with my trust FMT.

Seem to have hit quite an early Xp cap even before Cloakwood without doing all the exploring or Durlags or anything too cheesy.

I know you can remove the xp cap but my question is how? I’ve had a look at some mods but I am completely computer illiterate and all the guides seem to assume more knowledge of where to download files too and run order etc then I sadly have.

Anyone take pity on an old man still playing the same games he did when he was a kid and explain it to me with nice easy baby steps?

Thanks in advance!

  • https://www.gibberlings3.net/mods/tweaks/tweaks/ would be my go-to. Contains a lot of different tweaks you can choose to use or not, the one you're asking for is called "Change Experience Point Cap". Readme has a link to a guide on how to install mods (if this is the only mod you'll want feel free to skip to "Can we please just install some mods, finally" section which uses this exact mod as an example in the screenshots)

    You’re a legend, thanks

  • Tweak anthology can do this.

It's a pack of mods with an (outdate dos style) installer, where you can select which mods you want to install. This should work for several games and the readme shows which mods work for which games.

  • Fellow old man here. You really only need to remove the cap from BG and not BG2. Where did you get the game? GoG or Steam? You'll need to find your BGEE install folder and there should be a folder in there named override.

Mine is from Steam so my file path is

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition\override

    https://www.nexusmods.com/baldursgate/mods/35

just download the file and extract the zip. Then copy the contents into the above filepath.

Got it from steam, so fingers crossed that should work, thank you very much

  • So I did this very same thing last year, but just for BG2. Did a solo FMT run with the experience cap turned off. Run went fine (I made a post about it), but I found that removing the experience cap was a little overkill. That's just my opinion, so don't let me dissuade you from doing it. Having the cap off did feel like a safety blanket for doing my first solo run, which was honestly needed because I went in totally blind. I'm planning on doing another run without the cap and playing on either Insane or Throne of Bhaal (probably Insane, Throne of Bhaal difficulty solo sounds like a huge pain).

I'm starting to ramble, so let's get to the modding. So you'll need the Tweaks Anthology Mod. It works for both BG1 and BG2, but it just needs to be installed to both games.

Instructions are very straightforward on the website and you find all of the information here: https://gibberlings3.github.io/Documentation/readmes/readme-cdtweaks.html

Installation instructions here (They even use Tweaks Anthology as the example of how to install a mod): https://www.gibberlings3.net/forums/topic/33164-a-new-player%E2%80%99s-guide-to-installing-and-playing-mods/

The download can be found here: https://www.gibberlings3.net/files/file/973-the-tweaks-anthology/

You just need to follow the instructions to the letter and everything will be fine. It's just one mod, but with a few hundred components that you can select when the mod starts up. You'll need to wait until the option to activate Change Experience Point Cap comes up, as the mod has to go through each component to see if you want them in your game.

There is a comprehensive list of each component in the Read Me link I provided. There are some pretty cool changes in Tweaks besides just the experience cap changes. You can pick and choose which components you want on the mod. You can choose to just have the experience cap changes and nothing else, but I advise you read about each option as there are a ton of quality of life changes in Tweaks.

    Good luck!

Thank you for the comprehensive instructions, very helpful! I’ve done a BG2 solo run before with the cap and really enjoyed it, you’re right having HLA’s very early does break the game a little but my inner power gamer fancies just taking this Charname as far as she can go. Already started with a 94 roll, plus all the tomes and Lum’s machine should make for a sickening end game

  • Tweaks anthology has a lot of other good stuff. Some of it makes the game easier, sure, but some components are fantastic Quality of Life or roleplaying aides.

    My go-to components are:

    • Move NPCs to more accessible locations. It makes zero sense for Eldoth to be deep in Cloakwood, or for Shar-Teel to look for duel partners among basilisks. This component lets me plan my party more comfortably and sensibly.
    • Delay Neera's appearance in Beregost until your Charname has 5000 exp. Before this, you can very easily die in the resulting fight, which is really annoying, especially since the fight comes after a long, unskippable cutscene.
    • Send NPCs to an inn. Many of the people you meet are in inconvenient places, and it makes no sense for them to stay there forever. With this component you can ask them to meet you later in one of the game's inns if you want them in the party later, or just go to a more comfortable place, which is great.
    • Rest anywhere. I use this for purely roleplaying reasons. I want my party to rest inside the Sashenstar hunting cabin, not outside its door. That's dumb. With this tweak, we can roleplay dropping in for friendly visits with some of the NPCs in houses, or be a party of weird woodsmen who try to camp in somebody's yard.
    • No helmet animations, because all the helmets are super ugly and clunky.
  • As others have said, tweaks anthology. Beware though, removing the xp cap makes the game a lot easier. Which is fine if thats your intention, just something to keep in mind.

  • Just put it into a story mode because that's the level of how easy uncapped xp makes it on a solo run.
