Some Reddit shit to read while you have to listen to MOTD commentators.

With the Venezuela intervention and interventions for the sake of democracy:
Putting aside international law, which doesn't exist in any real sense and which no one really cares about..
Just deposing a dictator usually doesn't make the country any more democratic, often it goes very, very wrong. Involvement in the Somali Civil War led to the entrenchment of a brutal dictator. The deposition of Gaddafi created a dozen Libyan petty-governments and the re-emergence of slavery there, plus helped give rise to the modern people smuggling industry. The deposition of Saddam Hussein helped cause the rise of ISIS. The deposition of Assad just gave rise to an Islamist government in Syria that is just as anti-West. The list goes on.
It's one thing if the sole aim of the invasion is for resources or other geopolitics, which is likely the reason behind US intervention, that's more sane. Countries have been doing that since forever. But the point I'm making here is that going around the world trying to play saviour can, and will always be, stupid. The emerging narrative on parts of the online right that intervening in other countries to remove authoritarian leaders is a moral good that should be done is a dangerous one, it's a resurgence of the same kind of neoliberal/neoconservative foreign policy consensus that guided the West into making the missteps of the early-late 2000s. Trying to install democracy at the barrel of a gun is futile, because it's not just a question of holding open elections and leaving. For a democratic system to be stable and for the resulting government to not be radical and usually anti-western requires serious nation-building, it requires dismantling local power-holders (think: gangs, cartels, etc.) to ensure they won't just force one of their own into power using electoral manipulation, it requires teaching prospective voters the importance of a democratic system and what they should consider when voting, it requires guiding local politicians in the formation of political parties and ensuring they are supportive of democratic principles, and so on.
It's a serious commitment, and failing it means a situation like in Afghanistan where it's just warlords in suits draining aid money and lording over a population that detests them. Again, it's one thing to intervene due to national interests or the interests of the West as a whole. The Venezuelan intervention is justified due to the geopolitical leanings of Maduro, indeed it seems that the Trump admin wants to negotiate with the now-President to reorient the Venezuelan state towards US-friendly policies, and this makes sense as it requires no long-term nation building or attempting to construct/reconstruct some kind of democratic order. France also intervenes in its sphere fairly frequently to oust non-Francophile governments, and does this without attempting to nation-build. But the narrative on parts of the right that it is a good idea to try to bring about democracy globally is, and always will be, a stupid one that inevitably leads to outcomes unfavourable for the West.
I have not seen anyone on the right saying it’s a ‘moral good’ for the sake of democracy. I don’t think anyone wants that. I think that’s the argument some of the centrist types are making.
The US has simply gotten rid of a leader extremely hostile to them actively helping their rivals as well as the narco terrorism stuff.
Obviously a friendlier regime for their oil imports is also crucial.
Rubio has already addressed your references to prior engagements by the way. Iraq, Somalia, Afghanistan etc are nothing like South American countries. You can probably guess why very easily.
The US actually has a reasonably good record of regime change (without nation building) in South America. Panama being the prime example.
There is virtually no downside here for the US. What can go wrong? A civil war in Venezuela? I very much doubt it and they barely have to lift a finger to put a stop to it if it did.
TLDR. Islamist regimes are nothing like South America and it’s a very lazy comparison to make.
I largely agree, but I’m yet to see anyone make the case on the right because we can spread democracy/liberal valuesTM
All I’ve seen is that it’s purely a US and by proxy/vassalage a benefit to the Angloshphere
US gets its hands on the Oil which can be deflationary, aiding the reindustrialiastion of the west - whether that be for rearmament or onshoring manufacturing
Said oil supply increase gives a black eye to Russia/Arab states
Sends a real FAFO message to ascending superpowers from America. Whilst I would wish that Britain could plough its own course and not be a vassal, that’s not going to be the case anytime soon, so it’s in our interest that America is in the ascendancy.
No mention of spreading liberal values has been utter Afaik
Really excellent comment.
You're 100% correct, of course, and people are weird for celebrating already.

Redditors, and a lot of the public in general, just can't seem to grasp that those with the biggest stick and selection of sticks make the rules, regardless of what anyone says on the contrary.
Humans are still ooga booga cavemen when it comes to power, Starmer et al can pretend all they want that Rules Based International Twats ™️ and Doing The Right Thing ™️ is how the World runs, but the reality is, if someone says "actually, no, I'm not following those rules", unless you have force to back your bollocks up, it's just that - bollocks.
It's far too easily forgotten that the only thing keeping peace since the last World War is the threat of complete annihilation at the hands of forces of physics so immense it can destroy cities with something the size of a wardrobe.

Why does Trump sperg out over Greenland? Never understood why he wants it so much.
Wants a legacy and it’s pretty much empty territory
They voted to Leave the EEC so sorry bozos, consequences.
Looks big on the map.
Controlling Greenland gives you stategic dominance of the Arctic. Also it has a lot of untapped rare-earths, uranium etc.
Without any doubt, but he won't be there to see the benefits, and there will be an Obama V2.0 who will backtrack on everything Trump says before any benefits are realised.
I understand the Venezuela stuff far more that I understand the Greenland nonsense.
north arctic route to Asia opening
Oddly I mentioned this the other day.
The Russians lost a ship with nuclear stuff off Spain, and I asked why they didn't use the North route.
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2025/12/30/russian-ursa-major-ship-nuclear-reactors-sunk-mystery/
Presumably the ship was too large/fragile for the arctic route (even with an icebreaker). Plus they were lying and saying it was going to Vladivostok. If it hadn't sank there's a good chance nobody would have actually noticed anything unusual until it turned off it's transponder 50 miles or so from North Korea
seems like it's what's really going on, bypass the middle east extraction completely, sort of makes greenland absolutely golden territory (that, let's be real, in the hands of the EU won't be utilized fully)

Safe to say that if (big if) the Islamic Republic in Iran collapses, it'd be the biggest geopolitical shake up since 1991?
If Iran becomes secular it won't be the end of the story.
The Zoroastrians were wiped out, and Islam will try to do the same with any other regime.
... how many do we need to take in?
Depends
Sorry Nick, you only get to support shiftless criminal underclass foreign men
Possibly, but the size of the shakeup would depend on where the new Iranian regime positions themselves. If it just becomes a secular version of the previous BRICS-aligned state then it may as well be business as usual. If it goes around courting the West and normalising with Israel then that would be a hell of a shakeup.
(I hope the Islamic Republic collapses and normalises with the West, both for the freedom of its people and because I'd like to visit Tehran).
From what I've seen, the prince of Iran wants to restore the monarchy and install a democratic system, and they're also western aligned.
Whether that happens is another matter, but they have clear presidence to take over.
https://x.com/PahlaviReza/status/2007139691494084909
This would be popular with (many of the) American Iranian diaspora but not the people living there. 1979 happened because the Shah was badly mismanaging the country and using CIA trained secret police to squash dissent. A lot of those who moved to the west were part of the ruling class before the revolution.
Most Iranians agree that the Mullahs are even worse but I highly doubt a return would end well. On the other hand it would seriously rattle lefties all over the world
Based.
Never mind, my mistake

Uno jujeh kabab and a plate of chips with that luv
I think this is by far the likeliest outcome. The security forces take over and basically turn it into a more autocratic version of Turkey. This would be a good thing.
The problem is that anyone with any sort of political power in Iran today is an ultra islamist cleric. Breaking down those power structures will be more complicated than killing Khameini
This Venezuela thing is great on a number of fronts.

You mention Russian proxies but it's also very much a "Stay out of my territory" Walter White bit to China.

Yeah, there's no way the timing of doing it when the Chinese delegation was there was a coincidence. People saying it's like some quid pro quo agreement so that China can go for Taiwan - I'd say it's the very opposite, reminding them that they have firepower too and they're very good at using it.
ITV are just ripping off Mr Beast with their new TV show called The Floor.
I only watched it because I like Rob Brydon, but the lack of imagination is embarrassing, and it's just another death nail for UK Broadcast TV.

The 20,000 childhood obesity cases prevented number can only been pulled out of someone's arse and must be the work of a civil servant chasing an MBE. The influence of TV advertising must be negligible when everyone, kids included, gets their content from social media, streaming services, YouTube etc.
Anyway, maybe replace the slots with mandatory Mounjaro advertising. "Have you had a small prick yet?" can be the strapline.
[deleted]
The government’s overreach to deal with the issue certainly effects me. Won’t be long before meal deals are illegal.
Do kids even watch TV anymore? Fuck sake, they’re all frozen in 1999 aren’t they.
Maybe the Y2K thing was real, it just fried the brains of every Whitehall employee.
I think that's just when their neuroplasticity ended, no need for new memories and experiences, it was the end of history. It's why things like this make no sense if you look at it through a [current year] lens, but make perfect sense through a 1999 one.
None of this needs to be banned, we just need to bring back fat shaming

Online Snack Safety Act
This is what National Renewal looks like.
I remember the glory days when Coco Pops actually had sugar in and kids TV was packed full of adverts for sugary cereals and toys (all of which are now banned). The cartoons were excellent as the TV producers actually had money- now it's just all CGI slop.
Children's TV has truly collapsed in quality, it's pure slop now. Also back then there was a moral panic about childhood obesity (big up Jamie Oliver) but actually kids were still having happy and relatively healthy childhoods on the whole.
Messaging like this that supposedly advances the health of the nation always run up against the fact that being unhealthy is actively incentivised through PIP and other sorted disability legislation and schemes. If it was socially and culturally frowned upon with no incentives for lifestyle related conditions that would be far more powerful than the Frosties ad getting binned. As I've suggested before on a previous account, some of the money saved could subsidise a small voluntary reward scheme for people who keep themselves in shape so there's a bit of healthy carrot and stick.
What, you don't like an hour long Cocomelon melody about which particular waste item goes into which particular bin?
Does this ban butter, milk and honey then?
No more of those excruciatingly healthy looking Mediterranean people advertising Olive Oil
Not if they can't be seen. Just pixelate all the unhealthy food whilst it's being eaten so it looks like a particularly weird Japanese porn.

A friend of mine is in a long term relationship with a girl from Asia he met at university. He’s picked up the annoying habit of saying “Yookay” without any article, almost certainly from her because she’s not a native English speaker and that’s how she speaks.
“When we came back to Yookay…”
“Next time her family are in Yookay…”
The last international girl one of my friends dated was super nice and friendly the whole time until he broke up with her at which point she started spewing slurs like faggot etc.
I was scared she just wanted a citizenship from him and after that I'm pretty sure I was right. She tried to give him and ultimatum between her and hanging out with us. Pretty sure she was just trying to isolate him.
I first noticed this before it became a big online thing on the tv show Benidorm, even the cadence of it is always awful
Enlightenment is taking the Hong Kong girlfriend pill. They’re quite strange in some ways but they’re no bother and look 25 until they’re 40.
Hah, I nearly had a nice Hong Kong girl for myself, but I had no idea what I was doing and didn't ask her out. Now I'm older I've learned that you can just do things, so I don't have that problem any more.
Getting in a long term relationship with an international student? Her parents better be mega rich
Asia without a regional marker in the context of students probably means Chinese meaning she's the faildaughter of a head of some corporation or senior party member being sent abroad after failing Chinese entrance exams. Meaning her parents are rich.
Quite a few Chinese students I met were somewhat middle class people who've now gone home to work crap jobs. They came here with ILR in mind and worked under minimum wage in Chinese restaurants while studying
The children of high ranking communist party members don't mix with white people
I feel like the Scots are to blame for this Yookay shite. I already said England or (Great) Britain. Foreigners used to just say England until a few years back when the Scots started throwing a paddy about it. Now foreigners are saying Yookay to not offend the Jocks.

You need to also consider the category error where people mistake America pulling the plug on two costly and pointless counter insurgencies for military weakness.
Also consider how much tiktok propaganda china and Russia pump out suggesting they're near parity when in reality they aren't in the same league.
There is a huge lack of understanding about just how dominant the US military is.

Can't afford soap, the poverty
For your own sanity dont bother with the r london thread on this.
How do they afford to live in one of the world’s most expensive cities then?
Oh yes, of course.
When they've seen a posh white london English girl, you can see why they wouldn't want to be anywhere else.. but, yeah
You can get a toothbrush and paste for under a pound. Any parent who doesn't do this should be __________
Any parent who isn't skin and bones before their child goes without a toothbrush should be in the stocks
we now pretty much all these parents are fat and never cook or clean
Absolute codswallop, the lot of it. ASDA body wash is about 80p and lasts forever.
Just checked, cheapest bar of soap at Tescos is 30p, and that’s not even factoring in economies of scale or the fact that it’s not the cheapest supermarket.
A bar of soap is less than £1
Doesn't soap contain pig fats? Absolute haram!
Soap, shower gel, etc products have never been cheaper.
if you can’t scrape up 5 to 10 pounds for several weeks of cleanliness then no amount of help will ever be enough. You should be in a special room where someone pops in to remind you to breathe and chews your food for you.

Trying to understand this international law stuff
So you have a dictator, he's rigged elections, stayed in power, tortured opponents and protestors. Everyone seems to agree on this, the EU, UK gov etc
So, the UN will do something about this? They won't? They never do anything and have zero way of enforcing international law?
So people can live under a dictatorship and no one can do anything about it, and if you do something about it that's also bad
Well according to the UN, Maduro is the recognised leader of Venezuela per "International Law".
Currently the only agreed way to find something actually recognisably illegal under international law is through the UNSC where the veto system leads to basically no consensus. For everything else International Law is basically what the two countries have signed up to and agree to be held to. Realistically for International Law to be worth something, it has to be enforced. For that you need a policing force, which was America until the joint clusterfuck of Iraq/Afghanistan showed it wasn't worth the trouble.
It is interesting that the US are framing this as a law enforcement hit, so it wasn’t the country that was attacked but a regime that was no longer recognised as legitimate (by everyone that matters at least).
In a better world this is precisely the sort of action that the UN Security Council would be doing itself with a UN resolution, but in the real world… Every action is measured against articles laid down in the UN Charter, even when the UN as an institution is viewed as captured/hostile/unworkable.
Maduro criminalised private gun ownership, ignored election results, and a third of the population left while the remainder quietly starved. Sanctions alone were never going to achieve anything when oppressed people couldn’t rise up. Historically that only happens when a neighbouring country provides enough weapons, and even then it’s only to get rid of a regime that is hostile to you and replace it with one that is more friendly, or itself invades as ‘liberation’… to install a new regime friendly to them.
Do states have rights or not?
If International Law existed there would be no wars.
Laughing at how shocked, SHOCKED, the europ regulars are at US antics towards Greenland.
Trolling that they'll split a part of a kingdom and... ok y'know what I'm saying, they've spent ten years on antagonising the same for Scotland, Wales, NI, Cornwall, People's Republic of Grimsby etc.
You mean Kalaallit Nunaat right? Not the language of the oppressive colonisers in Copenhagen.
Greenland is the name given it by the Norse colonists who preceded the Inuit occupation of Southern Greenland by five centuries, so it definitely has more provenance. Since the Inuit probably played a part in the end of the Greenland Norse, shouldn't it be the Inuit who are the oppressive colonisers?
The inuit are indigenous
No they aren't. The Inuit are relative newcomers to Greenland. They are from Siberia.
The native Kalaallit have been there longer than the current colonists who arrived in the 1700s.

Politicians obsession with global nonsense is the worst
If Jeremy Corbyn, a politician representing an English constituency, had simply never expressed strong opinions on any issues outside England throughout his political career, he'd probably have become Prime Minister in 2017. Instead he's an irrelevant clown, a caricature.
Internationalist thinking really did a number on the Left.
It's a very nice distraction for Keith and the rest of Labour from the
EgyptianNew Brit story, they're going to try and keep this in the news cycle for as long as possible by continuing to talk about it.https://x.com/i/status/2007520863290060933
The MP for Leeds East is bravely running an emergency online "no war on Venezuela" protest at 6pm, so good news, if you've not got any evening plans, you do now.
Also this is funny not just because it is an emergency online protest, but because they obviously decided on doing this before it was decided by the International Rule Based Order that the US could have a free pass on this one, nobody cares, and there isn't even a war on Venezuela. It's not often you see true unprocessed 2016 vintage TDS in the wild, so drink deeply.
There will be no war, it was over in half an hour while everyone was in bed.
I did some research on the Venezuela Solidarity Campaign back when they were relevant to Corbyn's leadership of Labour. I came away with the distinct impression that they were at least in part ran out of the Venezuelan Embassy. Often hosted events at the embassy with their staff.
Edit: another.
Tariq Ali? Who's that?
Thanks Wiki!
Surely not foreign interference on the Labour backbenches? Say it ain't so.
Was on the Labour frontbenches from 2015 to 2019. Venezuela's regime was a particular obsession of the crowd that surrounded Corbyn, and especially Corbyn himself. At the expense of even running a meaningful domestic policy platform (can you remember any Corbyn policy?). Full on simp.
Pre leadership Corbyn was 100% focused on foreign affairs. I first heard of him as that weirdo MP who would attend literally any protest about Iraq, etc. We are talking 13 people in a room above a pub stuff here. So this is bread and butter stuff for him, just like the good ole days.
I don’t ever recall him ever taking any interest in domestic politics before he had too.

Stand with them in some vague way, which we all know isn't standing with them.
Leaving Britain is somehow peak Bomalian.
Couldn’t check in online yesterday.
Confirmed my seat selection online, and am assured it’ll be there.
Arrive today, three different Bomalians no that’s not what you discussed. Me, unless I’ve had a stroke, yes, it is.
Sarrrrr can’t do anything flight is 102%. No upgrade or anything sarrr.
Useless bastards. Guess I’ll have a good 8 hours to write a sternly worded letter.
Even when you get on these days, I often find random Indians sitting in my seat. "Sarr I need to sit here". No mate I paid 90 quid to reserve that seat. You can fuck off.
Paying £90 to reserve a seat is the real badUK in your post.
As far as I know, if its overbooked and you're pushed off you have the legal right to compensation.

Make sure to force them to give you compensation etc. If they're overbooked that's on them.
There is a god and I was upgraded free of charge.
The important lesson is to be an absolute Karen
When youre right youre right, and when youre entitled youre entitled, especially when flying which is shit when it goes well.
Somehow the BBC have only found Venezuelans who are against the fall of Maduro, and have seemingly decided to leave out the plethora of footage out there of the huge crowds of people celebrating it on the street (interviews start a minute into the video) - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/crmlz7r0zrxo
Although that's not entirely fair of me, because they have decided to run an article about people in Florida celebrating, which has strong vibes of 'Gusano Cuban Exiles celebrating from afar'. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/clygv0pd26eo
They are absolutely seething that a Socialist regime has fallen.
If we start allowing brutal dictators to be deposed despite international law, whatever next? Countries might also choose not to accept infinity Bomalians. There'd be total chaos.
Nice of Jeremy Bowen to take some time out of his Jew-Bashing to give his shitty take on the matter though
>Bowen: Trump's action could set precedent for authoritarian powers across globe
They already do what they fucking want Jeremy, why are we pretending they care about international law.
How has everyone who lived through it already forgotten the second Iraq War?? International law means jack shit lmao
