We have a variant of these in Florida and my old roommate accidentally stepped on one of them. That was a fun hospital visit. He was in quite a bit of pain and his foot swelled up to an impressive size. Couple days later he was all good again but would not recommend.
If I’m remembering right (possibly) puss caterpillar venom is literally just a bunch of neurotoxins. So he stepped on basically a living anti-nervous system landmine
Oh the compounds in these species are pretty minor compared to some of the other varieties. And that’s not even counting the John wick ass arsenal the inverts of the ocean have.
"There's a massive caterpillar that's literally venomous and if you touch it you will be dealing with days of agonizing pain. What does it look like? Absolutely adorable, somehow."
This species appears to be Podalia orsilochus, which lives in tropical parts of the Americas. Various other members of the family range from the U.S. to Argentina.
I saved a caterpillar from death on my doorstep and was handling it freely only to discover the little tufts of hair were actually a defensive mechanism and if touched they get stuck in skin and cause irritation. I think it was a dagger moth I think
Why fluffy if no fren :(
Is fren but personal space no touch :)
Is fren but no touch. :3
Essentially the structures on their back contain venom. And human nervous systems freak out when that venom gets into contact with them. Which hurts

Sometimes that's the price of kindness. But you saved a life and learned about natural defenses, so it wasn't a total loss.
All you can do is play his music and watch the stage
