I was pretty shocked by the cats' reactions, there's 2 cats. They were more intrigued than anything and didn't hide. It went really well! They were all cautious of another but nothing crazy. I was relieved.
I had a beagle mix that did that. I used to think Snoopy was nothing like a real dog. She proved me wrong. She got up on her hind legs, danced, perched on top of things, tried to talk, and cood at birds.
My cat Luna was raised by a collie dog as a small kitten. It's been seven years since she left the barn, but she's only now learned how to drink water like a cat! She still runs and sits like a dog.
I can hear “All I Want for Christmas is You” playing when you introduce them. I adopted a rescue right before Christmas one year and that was playing as I drove her to her forever home with me.
For once, it’s actually applicable. I generally abhor the idea of pets as presents but I’d asked for a cat for so long (years) as a kid. Opening that box to see my darling Clementine is one of my most cherished memories. She lived 21 years and her passing was expected but still devastating. We grew up together and I’ll never not miss her.
for my peace and so I can feel excited about this, tell me you knew how much work a puppy was before you did this. I believe you did, but I see too many stories of pets being given as presents and they end up in shelters and I want to be happy for you!
This is a nice way to say this. Thank you. Yeah it is not the kids dog. That can't be the mindset. These posts always make me super nervous and I hope the people have prepared and educated themselves properly. There is a massive influx of shelter pups a few months after Christmas because people aren't adequately prepared.
100%, a dog (or cat or any other living animal) is not a present. It's a long term commitment to the welfare of a living creature. At least whoever's getting the animal should be prepared to be the sole parent of the animal.
I don't understand why people don't get older animals if they're going to get one. Then again, I think some people need a certain amount of annoyance and frustration in their lives in order to be happy. My brain provides that for me already; I don't need external sources.
Oh she will be an absolute shark. Goldies look adorable but they are true land sharks and terrors if they want to be... And you get to deal with it until they finally outgrow being a puppy at like... 3 years old. 🤣
I don’t think that’s the case every time, it certainly wasn’t for me. I had bad puppy blues when my puppy was 2-6 months old. Then the clouds started to clear for me once she was about 7 months and beyond.
I say this only because of the photo of her on the front seat. Please get a harness that clips into a seat belt or around a backseat headrest now that she's home.
Nobody plans on being in a car accident but if it happens, you don't want your dog turning into a projectile or being crushed by an airbag.
What the hell is wrong with all the virtue signaling in the comments? Maybe the kids wanted a specific type of dog and OP has a big house so taking care of it would be no problem. Why is everyone jumping to assumptions? Like seriously, chill tf out.
OP congrats, your kids are about to have their best childhood/adolescence of their lives. A pet teaches them responsibility
Seriously, I feel bad for OP that they accidentally phrased their post in a cutesy way that triggered reddit. They said the kids have been asking for years, they clearly put thought into this and waited until they were ready to take on the responsibility of a dog. Calling it a Christmas present is just a little extra fun for the kids.
Maybe the golden will be the kids best friend until they’re adults.
He will be because those are literally the best or one of the best family dog. Plus if you get a good bred one you can spare yourself from heartache and vet bills.
The adopt don't shop people are the most annoying. Maybe some of us want a specific breed of dog/cat because of reasons and that's none of their concern.
This sub has become exhausting lol no matter what the photo is lately, majority of the comments are some holier than thou collective spouting off some crap
What is wrong with you people commenting? Of course I'm aware of how much work a dog is, I've had animals my entire life. This dog will be taken care of by the entire family and we're all aware of how much work will go into this dog. My children are aware of the responsibility and have asked for a dog for many years and will more finally be able to enjoy something they've asked for and worked for for years. No one is taking her back even if it gets hard, that's insane. Stop being all high and mighty in the comments behind the screen like the keyboard warriors yall are. Get a grip. Im a grown ass adult aware of what we all got ourselves into
I first want to say: congratulations! She is ADORABLE! 🤩 you and your Family couldn’t be more lucky.
Regarding the comments, please just ignore. Of course you are an adult and we have no reason to doubt you know how to endure tough times with your pets. Just the fact you shared her and your story is indicative of how proud and happy you all are with Lavender 😍
Thank you for sharing the story and the numerous beautiful photos of you with her 🙃😊 Made my day! 🙏🏻
you also made it clear it was something they had asked for for years, which means it was not a decision you jumped into. You waited.
You obviously have cats, which means you understand caring for pets. You aren't just going in blind.
Ignore the haters and soak in the puppy love from Lavender. She is soo stinking cute. I used to be scared of dogs (not so much now), but I ALWAYS loved Golden Retrievers. They are just the sweetest bundles of fluff and love. and I love Cats and Goldens. Fun combination.
Everyone's a critic, and everyone thinks they know what's best. Its the internet for ya... everyone has to leave input because they think they know everything about every situation they ever come across.

Not everyone gifts animals, and not everyone who gets an animal as a gift is abusing said animal.
What a cutie! That first journey home is always magical. I remember when we first brought my childhood dog home 16 years ago, and she sat in her bed on my lap, cuddled up against me during the journey.
It is very hard to do the first couple of weeks easing a puppy into a new and stressful situation during the chaos of the holiday season. You will be trying to start housebreaking with a tree inside the house. The first few weeks can be important in setting up routines that help the puppy become a dog you will actually want to live with.
adorablee!! i hope you enjoy your christmas with a puppy :)
my dog was already an adult by the time christmas rolled around, so we didn't really get the silly puppy things at christmastime!
i know you haven't asked for any recommendations, just thought i'd give a christmas present recommendation! any retriever i've known loooves their balls, and Chuckit balls are great! my dog loves their squeaky ones, and a retriever i looked after before loved their whistler ones. they're also tougher than tennis balls and last much longer :) plus, i've heard that tennis balls can be rough on their teeth due to the material! which isn't too great :(
As someone who got my then 2-yr-old daughter a golden (named Rose), you did good.
Rose stayed with us through all of our child’s formidable years (2-18) and taught our child about kindness, compassion, empathy as well as care for something other than oneself.
It was a beautiful relationship that still impacts our child and how they live their life now as an adult (25 and living alone). They have a cat now named Aloe who is a dear part of their family.
Congratulations and I’m so excited for your kids (and you). What a fun journey. 🥰
There’s a difference between unexpectedly gifting a dog to one of your friends and a family making an informed decision to get a family pet at Christmas time. The best Christmas gift I ever got as a kid was my dog Chloe who will forever be cherished in our memories. Maybe try using some critical thinking skills before commenting next time.
OP clearly stated they had been considering it for years. They simply chose to do it around Christmas and make it a thing. It's not like they went past the shelter and did this on a whim because they ran out of ideas for gifts.
It can be if the receiver and giver both fully know the responsibility. I got a kitten for Christmas last year as a present. That cat is beyond spoiled and treated just as well as my other 5 cats, we knew kittens required work, we've had 2 before, and still adopted another one.
Technically the present I got is just someone paying the adoption fees. I chose the cat myself and took care of it (and still does)
Full disclosure, I have severe cute aggression so I mean this in the best, most non-threatening way: Lavender is the stupidest (cutest) thing I’ve seen this week and I want to punt her little butt all the way to the moon she’s so adorable!!!!!!
But I honestly just love her sweet little face and I want to smother it in kisses. Reminds me of our family lab, Maggie. ❤️Merry Christmas / Happy holidays!
Sounds like they've been considering this for a while if the kids have been asking for years. It's not a whim, and they already have pets, so they understand the level of responsibility. Kids will be off from school to enjoy the new pup.
Sorry given the number of dogs in the shelter and posts by “tired mom at the end of their rope—need this dog gone now!” about 6 months after Christmas I can’t feel good about this post. Pets should not be gifts. All family members need to opt the choice and understand the impact of a living creature on the home, the budget, and the lifestyle.
I dont need to be negative but like animals shouldnt be GIFTS please dot on your kids to take care of the dog so it dosnet end up being your responsibility or at a shelter
Dude. Obviously this is not literally a present for the children to take care of exclusively. It’s a family pet that the parents are knowingly going to be primarily responsible for.

When people say don't give pets as presents they mean other adults giving their grandchild/niece/nephew/friend's kid a pet just out of nowhere and catching the parents by surprise and potentially putting them in the spot of having to be the bad guys of having to say no and take away the pet.
A parent who is giving their children the pet they have been asking for is completely different and fine.

Here she is settled in 💖
How does the cat feel?
I was pretty shocked by the cats' reactions, there's 2 cats. They were more intrigued than anything and didn't hide. It went really well! They were all cautious of another but nothing crazy. I was relieved.
Lavender will grow up thinking she's a cat 🤗 I have an 80 pound shepherd mix who perches on the back of the couch with her cat sister lol
She's adorable!
I had a beagle mix that did that. I used to think Snoopy was nothing like a real dog. She proved me wrong. She got up on her hind legs, danced, perched on top of things, tried to talk, and cood at birds.
Are you talking about my Poppy?

She does all of those things and more 😂 she is best friends with my kitty Divina! Divina gets along better with dogs than with other cats, lol
Does Poppy like belly rubs because her belly looks like it needs some rubs
Yes she does! She especially loves butt scratches.
Yup I bet OPs pets are gonna be BFFs within a couple months.
Can confirm. If you've never heard a pit bull try to purr, it's both mildly terrifying and adorable at the same time.
Ares trying to loaf like the cats was even more hilarious.
My cat Luna was raised by a collie dog as a small kitten. It's been seven years since she left the barn, but she's only now learned how to drink water like a cat! She still runs and sits like a dog.
I NEEEEED TO SEE A PIC OF HIM/HER LOAFING. PLEASE.

Not the person you’re replying to, but this is my cat loving dog Poppy loafing. She sploots more than she loafs but her loafs are very cute too :)
Hah meanwhile I have 2 65lbs pit mixes, with a cat who was raised by them. SHE is the boss, but also thinks shes a 65lb pitty as well 🤣
https://preview.redd.it/4vzwiqa1q67g1.jpeg?width=2252&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a5c809ac0cb6ba6940e5bd839b977406a13a2a2d
I mean, I just see three pitty’s, you don’t?
Photo tax or it doesn't happen
Ha my brother's Labrador sometimes does the same thing! But she's never even met a cat, she's just a weirdo (and I wouldn't change her for anything).
cats mostly understand when something, even a different species is a baby.
Mine had never seen a human baby before a few days ago and instead of hiding away they were extremely interested.
Yes that's exactly it! The cats are afraid of the big dog next door but they were mind blown when they saw a baby puppy haha, so intrigued
Funnily enough, cats tend to accept dogs into the house easier than new cats. They kinda see dogs as big idiots, and therefore they get a pass.
And then there's my dog, who was bullied by the cat as a pup and now has a fear of them as a near 70lb boxer😅
Or it turns into rocky and mugsy.
Dog and Cats, living together! nothing happened. Just carry on with your day....

Staredown for the ages
"i have some Christmas tree shenanigans to tend to. please don't bother me, silly dog. and for the 100th time, no! i don't have any treats."
dramatic flounce
"I know you're hiding them somewhere I can smell them on your butt"
We have that exact same cat tree, and just got a golden puppy by the name of Ellie (Eleanor Woofsevelt).
Our cats are also less than thrilled
SOON.
honestly feel free to make another post with more pics of her+the cats
fucking adorable
Where's the bow OP
WHERE IS THE BOW
She’s so baby
"KIDS" Christmas present. Sure pops. Such a good looking dog.
Aww look at her parked up there. I love her name too

That’s such a beautiful memory. Those car rides really stay with you.
Thank you for rescuing!
Thank you for adopting instead of buying!
Always!
I hate that song but I think even my cold heart would be fine with it in that instance. Cute.
Vince Vance or Mariah? 🤔
It was Mariah, this was about 16 years ago
Welcome home, Lavender!
This is a treat ball puzzle I’ve given to my dog and like 15 friends dogs and is a big hit.
I also have a rubber one we trained them on that’s a white dodecahedron with little flaps that’s much easier

They can entertain themselves for a long time with just like 10 little corn sized treats in it
the Snoop from Outward Hound is also great!!!
for my peace and so I can feel excited about this, tell me you knew how much work a puppy was before you did this. I believe you did, but I see too many stories of pets being given as presents and they end up in shelters and I want to be happy for you!
10000% we are aware of the responsibility of a dog

and adolescent dogs are even worse than puppies. that thing is going to be a velociraptor from 6 months to 2 years old...
I've had several dogs in my life and I think I wipe this phase from my brain every time.
I don't understand why people don't get older animals if they're going to get one. Then again, I think some people need a certain amount of annoyance and frustration in their lives in order to be happy. My brain provides that for me already; I don't need external sources.
We're dog sitting for an 8 month old for FIVE WEEKS.
He's lovely but he's a lot of work lol
Yup. The teenage stage of baby animals in general is a freaking nightmare.
Oh she will be an absolute shark. Goldies look adorable but they are true land sharks and terrors if they want to be... And you get to deal with it until they finally outgrow being a puppy at like... 3 years old. 🤣
And cats are permanent velociraptors.
I don’t think that’s the case every time, it certainly wasn’t for me. I had bad puppy blues when my puppy was 2-6 months old. Then the clouds started to clear for me once she was about 7 months and beyond.
Of course I do. This dog is going to be spoiled rotten by many
Especially golden retrievers who are basically velociraptors from 6-24 mos
laughs in German Shredder mom
I say this only because of the photo of her on the front seat. Please get a harness that clips into a seat belt or around a backseat headrest now that she's home.
Nobody plans on being in a car accident but if it happens, you don't want your dog turning into a projectile or being crushed by an airbag.
I was thinking the same thing.
when i retire i am going to get a pup cant wait thats a nice pup have fun

That’s typical Reddit lol! Congrats and enjoy your pup!!

Lol people see to many bad things in their life and deflect it onto every little thing they see without any other information. Its easy to assume and look like a miserable person while doing so.
Not everyone gifts animals, and not everyone who gets an animal as a gift is abusing said animal.
Its very clear they thought about it
Agreed. Miserable people spreading their misery to others through assumptions and ignorance. I hope they get the help they need.
Excited for OP's new family member!
Thank you so much! I agree, people are being insane. Im well aware of the work that has to go into this dog hahah
i wonder if they know how cute they are when they look at us with those button eyes
Yes...."kids" present 🤣
HAHAH RIGHT
You got the wrong colour. It seems golden to me.
Now I want a passenger princess named Lavender.
🥹
I hope they love their new family member
I told them beforehand that their life is about to change forever. It's a life changing event! They're ecstatic
She just needs a cute purple Christmas bow and purple sweater and purple balloons.
Hopefully you're aware dogs are not Christmas presents for kids but a huge responsibility for the whole family.
At least they're calling it an early present and not trying to hide him in the garage until Christmas.
Yes people do that. Yes it's extremely depressing working at a pet shop or rescue this time of year.
Yikes
I think that if OP finally decided to get a dog after “years of asking,” they’re pretty cognizant of the work that comes along with the dog.
THANK YOU LOL, EXACTLY.
Adorable pup!
She's gorgeous. If you can, take her to puppy socialisation classes. Dogs learn a lot from being around other dogs. Take the kids too!
she looks so soft omggg
What a cutie! That first journey home is always magical. I remember when we first brought my childhood dog home 16 years ago, and she sat in her bed on my lap, cuddled up against me during the journey.

What a sweetie pie!
Animals are not gifts ffs
For your own kids? When you’re prepared to take on the work involved?
Sounds like a great time for an animal as a gift. Kids are happy, adults involved know the effort entailed, animal’s not going to be neglected.
Exactly!!!
This one is! It’s a miracle!
How exciting!

So cute reminds me of when I got my first girl when I was 12 back in 2011
Andrex puppy!
Remember, OP, a dog is not just for Christmas.
With careful portion control, you can be enjoying the leftovers right up to the new year.
Pets are no Christmas Gifts.
Sounds like they've been considering this for a while if the kids have been asking for years. It's not a whim, and they already have pets, so they understand the level of responsibility. Kids will be off from school to enjoy the new pup.
Pets are pets. Christmas gifts are cool. Finish the pattern.
The kids will love to play and cuddle with the dog, but ultimately this is YOUR dog. Please be mindful of that extra responsibility
Thx, no way OP could’ve known that
Thanks for telling me, I NEVERRRRR would have thought about it 🙄
Hi Lavender!

Dude. Obviously this is not literally a present for the children to take care of exclusively. It’s a family pet that the parents are knowingly going to be primarily responsible for.
Please post their reactions!
Let's not encourage people to post pictures/videos of children on the internet.
Totally agree.
Or getting pets as presents.
I mean this is a parent who's getting the pet.
I wish I could, I don't wanna post my kids on the internet but let me just tell you my almost 10 year old cried and my almost 12 year old was shook
