using specific examples,

JAL, Qatar, and AA are all part of oneworld alliance.

i can book a JAL flight for SEA to TYO through AA website, flying on JAL metal direct flight.

so i would also assume that I can book a JAL flight for SEA to TYO through Qatar website and fly on JAL metal direct flight.

but there doesnt seem to be any.

when it comes to alliances and booking direct flights, how does that work exactly?

how come i can book a direct SEA to TYO flight on AA website flying JAL. but cant do the same through Qatar?

and whats the best way to search for something like this? (im doing manual atm)

  • Not award related. Depends on a bunch of factors. Not all airline partners/alliance members are the same.

  • how come i can book a direct SEA to TYO flight on AA website flying JAL. but cant do the same through Qatar?

JAL/AA have a joint venture agreement for these routes, Qatar doesn't. You observe the same on UA/NH for example.

is there a way to find these kinds of thing easily instead of manually searching each airline website? and/or finding datapoints?

all these "secret" joint ventures make this all crazy.

What data points do you need exactly? Not sure how knowing these rules really makes a difference, but Google Flights is usually pretty comprehensive with this when searching for cash fares - you can easily see what's available within an alliance's rules (like an SFO-TPE flight only being available from CI, while SFO-ICN-TPE can be bought from KE or DL).

There is no secret, you have to look at the airline website and see if you can book on a partner flight. That's the only way to know.

  • If you are asking for help finding flights or hotel rooms, please ensure that Rule 5 is being followed. The Wiki is a great resource and your may be referred to it. Low-quality posts may be deleted without warning.

r/awardtravel is a place to discuss anything related to redeeming airline miles & hotel points.

  • It would be nice if someone could write out exactly what the bare minimum regarding benefits are for each alliance. As far as I can guess, it's interlining and reciprocal status recognition?

Whether or not airlines allow partner awards, check through luggage, or sell tickets for each other at a competitive price, it seems like these are all dependent on individual relationships between airlines.

A good analogy might be that each alliance is a very broad and loose group of friends, and there are smaller cliques based on commercial relationships within the group. For the people in the group, most of their friends are within the group, but they also have some friends outside the group.

do you know if there is a simple way to find these "secret" joint agreements? the way i go about it is through manual searching... which is very tedious.

At least for award travel a lot of airlines will list which airlines they can book on. The reverse mapping (which airlines can book on X) you can find websites that search this.

Wait, why is this question on this subreddit if you're specifically interested in cash bookings?

OP vanished but I am curious to why they're fixated on this. Do they think it's like award travel and some obscure OW airline might sell a cheaper SEA-TYO cash ticket than AA or JL?
