Premier Jacinta Allan’s husband caught drink driving on way to supermarket in random breath test

You would be surprised how many people would be running the DUI gauntlet most mornings, thinking they are OK. Buy yourself a cheap breathalyser and be amazed at how much of an alcoholic you are

It’s insane how many adults think that sleep = reset drunkenness.

Sure mate, it’s 8am, but you sunk half a carton last night and didn’t stop to go to sleep until after 3am. You’re not going to be sober until lunch.

    parent root

But not your enzymatic processing of alcohol. The processing of alcohol is a zeroth order kinetic reaction, which means it proceeds at a steady rate independent of things like how much is in your system and, in the case of alcohol here, your level of consciousness. The rate varies from person to person, but not for that person (unless we’re talking about rate change over the years to be semantic)

    Mark 11:12-25

12 The next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry. 13 Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs. 14 Then he said to the tree, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard him say it.

20 In the morning, as they went along, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots. 21 Peter remembered and said to Jesus, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree you cursed has withered!”

So the old medication excuse was raised. Are there any medications that cause your liver to process alcohol slower? I assumed the warning about not drinking on some medications was because it increased the impact of alcohol or reduced the medications effectiveness.

But supposedly he was celebrating a birthday and went home at 8pm. Assuming standard rates of alcohol elimination, and a 6-8pm window of drinking, that would result as about 18 standard drinks in that time to approximately be around 0.05 at 9am the next day. A drink every 6-7 minutes.

    parent
    3 points Afraid_Cockroach_398

And it's hard to believe it was an RBT when he rear ended a car earlier that same day. Nothing random about that breath test.

    parent root
    18 points dreamthiliving

And medication typically has no effect on the BAC

    parent root
    0 points Far-Fennel-3032

A lot of medication has significant impact on how quickly your body removes it from your system. Such that people stay intoxicated for longer.

Considering the guy blew over the limit at 9am the next day, medication like this actually quite relevant.

Now they could be talking out of their arse and went really hard or keep drinking till really late. But medication is a completely plausible explanation in this context.

    parent root

Why are the actions of a partner or family member of a politician even news?

    parent root
    5 points Smooth_Staff_3831

But you think it should be news if it was an LNP member.

    Why the double standards?

    parent root
    7 points jydr

If it was a family member of an LNP politician then I don't think it should be news either.

But I'm assuming you are talking about the other comment about Barnaby Joyce?

In that case, one is an actual member of parliament, the other isn't.

It is bizarre that you think a family member of a politician is equivalent to an actual politician, but maybe you just watch too much US media.

    parent root
    1 points Strike_Swiftly

Medication wasn't the cause. First bit of bs spin.

Second bit, if they had a minor accident and exchanged details, why did police RBT him?

    parent root
    1 points jydr

The information is all in the article if you read it.

Allan said she and her family were celebrating her son’s birthday at their local pub on Wednesday evening and headed home about 8pm.

“My husband is also currently taking medication for a health issue, and as a result of the medication mixing with the alcohol from the night before, he simply shouldn’t have been driving the following morning,” she said.

Allan said there was no excuse. “He understands that. I understand that, and for this, we are both truly sorry.”

The two events seem to be unrelated:

Piper, [...], continued on to the supermarket and was then stopped by police for the random breath test just before 9am.

Police said in a statement that Piper, 56, was stopped in Mitchell Street, Bendigo as part of a statewide road policing operation.

The thing about random breath testing... is that they are random.

    parent root
    1 points Strike_Swiftly

There is only one medication that reduces alcohol processing and he wouldn't have been on it. Thats complete spin.

    parent root
    1 points jydr

that is also in the article:

Nial Wheate, a professor of pharmaceutical chemistry at Macquarie University, said some medication affected the metabolism of alcohol.

He said enzymes in the liver that break down alcohol also break down medicine but can’t work on everything at once, leaving alcohol in the body for longer.

This also means people can be legally impaired at lower levels of drinking.

    [...]

Wheate said antibiotics were one category of drug that affected the liver, and blood pressure medication such as antihypertensives were shown to make alcohol stay in the body for longer and increase blood-alcohol readings.

    parent root
    2 points National_Way_3344

No need to say, correct process was followed for someone doing crime.

Being said, Jacinta and Dan for that matter should have clipped their family over the ears staying they need to keep their noses clean as fuck - since the rabid dogs from the right will hold them to higher standards than the opposition counterparts.

People make mistakes and I've always thought that the morning after can be hard to judge. What annoys me are the excuses and lies.. "we went home at 8" "he's on medication". No, you went home at 8 and he smashed 2 bottles of red. His medication doesn't increase the level of alcohol in his blood.

What we need to make sure of here is that no tax payer dollars are used to transport this guy around in cabs or private drivers. He can get the bus like the rest of us

    parent

    parent root
    3 points _its_really_me_

I don't know if anyone is actually interested in this or it's just rhetorical, but here's a quote from the alcohol and drug foundation website (adf.org.au):

"If you drink while taking these medications (e.g., contraceptive pills), your liver will be slower at processing alcohol, leading to a higher BAC."

They don't offer a comprehensive list of which medications can do this but, assuming it's correct (they don't offer a source as far as I could see), it shows that it is possible.

    parent root
