A shrill wind bit through his threadbare coat, chilling him to the bone as he stood before the door, considering his options.
Turn around and walk home. And so what if I freeze to death on the way; I just get sleepy, stop, and drift off. Probably one of the less painful means... he thought.
With a heavy sigh he reached for the handle; the door screeched open, echoing into the darkness beyond. Stepping inside the door slammed behind him with the finality of the cell door behind the condemned. His throat grew dry with every step, guided by small islands of light in the inky darkness.
His stomach dropped as he thought he heard an evil chuckle. Just your imagination, he thought to himself, unsure if he believed it himself.
The sound of footsteps made him look over his shoulder. He shivered. Those are yours. He turned his face colliding with a soft diaphanous wall, sticking to him. Panic elevated his heart beat as he clawed at his face, twisting to get away. Off balance he fell through a sea of purple and black, hitting the hard wooden gymnasium floor with a thud that reverberated.through the space.
He sighed as a voice chuckled through the gloom. “Alright guys and ghouls, grab your favorite scream queen or king and shuffle your way out for a monster mash-up. And the chaperones have asked me to remind you no biting, clawing, and only limited pawing if you please. Yeah, yeah, I know, but they pay me so I had to say it. So enjoy the Marstown High School Halloween dance, and let me know if you have a request.”
He could see the reflections in a hundred eyes. Never a psychopathic serial killer around when you could use one.
