Recently, a few of us became new moderators and since then we have been trying to get organized primarily to update the rules to reflect what we believe are in the best interest of this sub. This has largely meant reverting to the structure prior to the protest while also adapting to current technology and tastes. While we supported the protest goals at the time, and agree with the mod decision to include this sub in that protest, we also recognize that it's time to move on and restore some process to the sub for its continuing members. We're excited to announce that these new rules are now live in the sub and in detail at ourĀ revised wiki. The changes from prior to the protest largely amount to:
- astrophotography images taken with cell phones were not explicitly forbidden before but we now clarify that they are permitted as long as they follow all other rules, including that acquisition and processing details are provided and are high-quality amateur OC. A star-field with no discernable astronomical object will not meet this threshold, but a stacked image of Orion that happens to have been captured using RAW images on an iPhone and further processed on that same phone will. We recognize everyone in this hobby starts somewhere and we want to encourage sharing of this work, but also need to avoid this sub devolving into low-effort cell phone pictures of an unrecognizable night sky.
- landscape images were forbidden before but we also recognize that there are some high-quality astrophotography images being created that happen to have a small amount of landscape in the foreground that are valued by many members. We are drawing the line here at astrophotography images where the landscape is incidental to the image and any image where the landscape is a primary focus will not be permitted. So for example, the Milky Way with a silhouette of a mountain will probably be accepted, but that same Milky Way that is in the background of well-lit (or brightened in post) barn/yard/house/etc will be removed. And as above, any post that doesn't include acquisition and processing details will still be removed.
- clarifications that certain types of posts are not allowed, including memes, UFO claims, questions about what image someone has captured, off-topic posts, or uncivil behavior.
We recognize not everyone will like these changes and that there are other subs that focus primarily on some of these types of images, but we feel that an "astrophotography" sub should include everyone. We are going to monitor how well this goes, so please try to be open-minded to help support these contributions from some members of the community. After some time with these changes we plan to poll you to see how they are going and what other improvements you'd like to see. In the meantime, with these rules back in place, expect to see heavier moderation if posts lack complete acquisition/processing details or otherwise violate these rules.
Lastly, we also want to thank everyone for their patience while we get organized to bring these changes to you and for the incredible work all mods on this sub have done over the years and continue to do (many from prior to the protest are still here and active, so show some love!).
Clear Skies!

In general, how detailed should the workflow description be?
For example should I simply state "stacked in Sequator, processed in Lightroom"?
Or should it include: "Stacked in sequator, autobrightness, remove dynamic noises, reduce light pollution. Processed in Lightroom, stretched, balanced, cropped, noise reduction, defringed"
Thanks mods.

You might want to include a reference in the new wiki to some of those that are still relevant and valuable.
Thanks, we'll take a look

Easy, your local Pleiades dealership!
This is exciting! Looking forward to the changes and (hopefully) returning the sub to its former glory.
THANK GOD, I don't have to spam report every single "rule break" anymore. Good stuff
Reporting still helps us to see problem posts or comments much faster though. We appreciate your assistance!
Thanks very much! Looking forward to the changes.
Awesome. Thank you for all the work you do mods!
FINALLY!! Thank you!
Thank you. I've been getting real sick of the low effort phone snaps of a random star field.
I for one welcome our new, once again active, mod overlords :)
Awesome to hear this from you guys! Love the take that you have on it. Exciting future :)
I, for one, welcome our new Mod overlords. Cheers, team!
Big thanks to the mods!
I was gonna come here to share the photos I was proud of, but after looking at the posts, holy crap... Think I might just stick to Facebook.
Hello! I'm doing a documentary about posthumanism and the limits between the body and machine called Dioses Mudos here in Chile. I was wondering if I could ask for pictures of our sun, hopefully of it's surface, here in the subreddit. There would be credits for the images/videos used of course, and they would be of great help for this project. My name is Esteban, thank you very much.
Anyway we can require Bortle zone or SQM reading?
The whole idea of posting your equipment and processing is so others can see what others have done with similar equipment and software. When most post that, they fail to post Bortle or light pollution readings. This is as important as the other information in my mind.
It's kind of annoying. Even on astrobin, a lot don't post Bortle zone.
I agree that bortle is an important piece of information to share. We struggle right now with getting people to post all the other basics too and finding ways to keep on top of that but we'll see what we can do.
Ok... thanks!
The reason is surely that it's tucked away in "Additional properties" so many people don't know it's there or don't bother. However, many more attach a location to the image, so AstroBin could use the location to fetch a Bortle scale!
Greetings mods. I made a timelapse video of the aurora from last week. I have uploaded the video on YouTube. How am I able to share the video here? Please advise. Thank you
How come questions which are supposed to be posted at AskAstrophotography are often up for hours and hours? I'm usually the one that tells a mod of those posts. I understand mods not being here 24/7, but a lot of times I see a question that was posted for 10 hours or more like this one:
https://www.reddit.com/r/astrophotography/comments/1hqsq00/basics/
It's been up for 14 hours.
We can't catch everything ourselves and rely on the reporting mechanism to allow us to review reports from other users of rules violations. Thank you for doing your part to help. That post hadn't been reported through the normal mechanism but I'll take a look.
Understood, but it takes a minute of scrolling to see them.
Can I become a mod?
How can I start the astrophotography path using my smartphone?
