I work for FedEx. The racial divide is about 50/50. Everyone there is great! But I cringe inside when a coworker calls me boss. We are equals, I'm not in a position of authority. It's used in the context of sir or even dude would be. "Have a good day boss."
Is this just something heard growing up that it becomes common to use. Or am I being slighted. Due to America's long, troubled past, it just doesn't sit right when I'm called boss.
Thanks for any insight.
It’s like a term of respect between two men. He is just saying that you are cool and he respects you and you respect him.
It's a remnant of enslavement and it irritates me to my core.
I always say it like saying bro, dude, homie, etc.
